- My first metalworking project. Please leave comments.
update (2/14). Wow, no idea this video with lousy music would generate so much interest! Let me answer a couple of commonly asked questions:
All tubing and scrolls were purchased through Kings Metals in Dallas. They have a fantastic catalog and one of their sales guys helped me come up with the design. The bent tubing can be purchased from them as well.
In 2009 the metal cost was around $800, with the scrolls being at least 2/3 of that expense. I had an extra fence panel of 1/2 in tubing that I can be seen cutting off to use in the middle.
The installer furnished the opener and mounted it for me. It was his decision to open outwards and place the installer on the outside. I have landscaped around the opener and is not really noticeable.
Splitting the gate in two pieces - probably the way to go due to the final weight of the gate - about #400 - but there is the additional expense of another opener.
In the last 5 years I have had to replace the gate opener and adjust the hinges once.
This gate is really in no way meant to be "secure" - one could easily walk around the gate on the uphill side - but it really is a nice way to close off the driveway and is a nice addition to our home.
This was truly my first metal project after taking a basic metal sculpture class and I sure learned a lot.
Thanks for your comments and keep 'em coming! - Навчання та стиль
Great deal. Just right size for us. Wish we had bought one sooner.
That hinges is good for that gate
Nice job boss 👍👍😎
Kemery looks like a good supervisor 🤪
And not to mention the possibility of someone becoming trapped between the wall and the gate. You chose the best position IMO.
Excellent work as well. Looks really well made.
Wow, super job! Looks totally awesome!!
that is an amazing effort for your first metalworking project, well done
beautiful work
Im motivated now. Nice work!
Great project. I wish I could weld up something that substantial with my everlast at some point. I'm going to start by building myself some security bars and work my way up to bigger projects.
Magnifique travail. Bravo.
Thanks! Glad you like the design.
I can tell that took a LOT of time and effort. Very nice job!
So impressive. I can't believe you pulled that off in the first try! Wow.
very impressive work.
Sick job! Great video.
That is one massive gate. At some point I will be attempting something similar with my everlast welder. I should have an everlast plasma cutter by then too which should help a lot.
Awesome gate! Nice house too :-)
Very good work I am inspire you
Beautiful gates obbaron! Very artistic. Just in the process of making a side gate with an arc welder myself.
Very ambitious for a 1st metalworking project! Reminds me of someone my wife knows! LOL!
Great job, btw!
Great job!
looks good I have wanting to build one have some steel wagon wheels to build into the gate really like the opener
awesome job!
Всё впорядке!Good jobs!Thanks for video!
Nice work
Perfect gates😀
Nice work dude*****
That was a hell of a project I bet.
Very nice work man!!!
I like that the gate opens all the way leaving a perfect and clear driveway and closes perfectly.
I just hope your gate isn't too heavy to be hanging there, but I think you already figured it out if it is or not.
thumbs up for the vid man!!
Saved a lot of money bob
thanks Jessie
Very nice jobs
imo it would have looked so much nicer if it was cut in half opening and closing simultaneously.. amazing work!
Impressive..are you going to upload any more of your work?
@quocducnguyen Gate material cost was around $800 if I remember correctly. All of the scrolls were purchased through Kings Metals in Dallas. The hinges were recommended by the installer. They can be adjusted over time to compensate for sag. They are rated at 2000lb per hinge.
Nice job! Man....... you got some stones.
Nice gate !! Next time consider elite power hinges
The hinges were screaming "What the HEEEEEELLLLL", I am amazed that the support pole didn't buckle either...
I like the roller for the welder
@1krr thanks! The top of the gate frame is indeed four pieces that have an identical pre-bent shape to them. The scroll piece they surround is another preformed piece - 2 of the same - that you can see me putting together in the beginning of the video.
Wow, what an ambitious first project! And beautifully executed. Hats off to your industriousness. Just wondered what system you used to open and shut the gate. I'm doing something similar (though certainly not as beautiful) and am looking for a good reliable system to open and close it .
Thanks and kudos.
bravo!
Well, about a year ago I hit the gate with my truck (long story) hard enough to knock it out of square, requiring resetting the gate on the hinges.
I did have the motor/board fail at 1 year, just out of warranty. Currently on 3 years now without problems.
Very tedious on the embellishments but looks great. Approximately, how much did this gate weight when done?
شكرا
I appreciate your thoughts. There was really no way to functionally install an inward swinging gate on my property. Trust me, I went through all the possible scenarios. While the outside motor is not asthetically pleasing to you, I am proud of how the gate turned out overall. Also, I never meant for this gate to function as a secure feature. The retaining wall on the left of the gate can be easily scaled, thus no one would bother to try and disable the exterior motor mounted gate.
@koalityman The decision was from the installer. The gate was so heavy it required the 8 inch post to be in the ground about 50 inches and 800 pounds of concrete. This would have required jackhammering the existing slab to expose the ground, plus it would have been near the base of that large retaining wall. In addition, the installer thought the existing location would distribute the force among the other gate posts.
Very very cool work. I'm starting the same project in a couple of weeks! Was curious how you bent your top rails or if you had someone bend them. Your gate is very similar to what I had envisioned. Again, great work and thanks for the video.
Nice 😎
Needs a trailer type jockey wheel with telescopic shock absorbency to make the transition smooth at midpoint maximum load, especially in winds and turbulent storms . Big ask for a twin support system. Great workmanship though .. Small wheel in the outer lockable edge.
You should never install a wheel of any kind on a swing gate. If a gate needs a wheel, then you've built the gate wrong.
You should consider putting a wheel the end of the gate because those hinges will be under alot of stress.
How are those hinges holding up? Why this and not barrel hinges?
Part of install was taking an existing fence panel I had and bending it (can see in pics), plus large post, gate operator/battery/remote. I think they charged me a little over 2k.
The whole point of using an Apollo gate opener with a linear screw drive is so that you can mount the gate mechanism INSIDE where it is protected and still have it open the gate to the outward position. Anyone can walk up to your opener, disable it and open your gate. There is no security in that and it ruins the aesthetics of your nice gate to have it hanging where you can see it from the street.
So it's been a few years how many times has it bent is there support wheels at least?
The four curved pieces were indeed pre-bent, cut to fit by me. Thanks!!
Truly a piece of art. What gauge was the top and side rails? what capacity were the hinges?
Dam nice
Nice job, but I will use separate 2 doors to reduce the stress to hinges and the post. BTW: what's the brand and model of your opener ? It works pretty fast then some openers.
cool i like it :D
@jackel440 The gate is 16 feet 5 inches wide. Glad you like the design! No clue on weight, took two-three adults to tilt up from the ground. I would guess 500#. If you go to kings metals website you can request a free design catalog for design ideas. Good luck!
wow nice i own twistersafe
and i know how to build things one thing i would have done double gate less weight on post and openers but really nice just curious what u do for a living most people with anice place like that are bankers lawyers doctors and most of them couldnt build a circle with rocks so what do u do
I'm curious to know how much it cost.
You could have used a grinder, or that saw would have been easier than a torch.. but hey, i love using torches, too. just more work to clean the slag..
nice job congrat guys i got a big question do you hava idea how much was the cost for the whole proyect ? thanks again felicidades ( congratulationes every body
As a machinist and welder; I AM IMPRESSED ! GOOD WORK !
Were you able to buy the 4 bell curve pieces
or did you bend them yourself?
Thanks,
John
Thanks for the video! Can you tell me the details on your support post-size, wall thickness, how tall/how deep, and anchor (Concrete, I assume, but hole size, etc)? Thanks! Jeff
That is 6 inch square metal tubing mounted 48 inches in the ground with about 800 pounds of concrete. All done by the installer.
Wow!! I was looking for examples to use to make a double gate for the end of my driveway. This is way out of my leaque (so is spelling) but at least I know where to start. It's been a while since you put this up. How is the gate opener holding up? Thanks!! Nice work!!
Can't believe so many views! To answer the last few comments: total cost about $750 for metal alone. All scroll work was pre-fabricated. Just cut tubing and welded it all together! Three years later, and I still can't stand the music either. The gate has required a couple of adjustments at the J-hinges due to settling. I still love seeing my work every day in the driveway! The opener arm and circuitry were replaced - under warranty - about 11 months later.
That is one huge gate. How much would you charge for something like that? I want to use my powerarc to custom make gates.
I will build a gate soon with a 14 ft opening, what size and thickness of steel did you use for the basic frame ?
Now that we are in 2013 is the gate still opening?? I mean are the pins still ok? or they failed? do you have any problem like bending and contact of the gate on the soil?
I thank you in advice for a prompt response.
Cheers
those "J bolts" are SEVERELY UNDER-POWERED !!!
What gauge steel did you use on the gate project?
I like the look of your gate. How wide is it?I just started to do the research on driveway gates,as I have never built them before.I would like to put one on the lane to my farm styled like yours.Did you ever see how much it wieghed?good job
Wow this is awesome!!! How much do you think the entire project cost to complete?

Beautiful gate and beautiful work. The most important comments I have is that I noticed you were not wearing hearing protection nor were you wearing a respirator. Youth seems invisible until old catches up to youth and overtakes it for it's past youth. Don't go deaf and don't get a respiratory disease. Nice video!
I don't think you understand. You can mount the opener on the INSIDE of the gate and still have it open to the outside. It is a push to open installation. The gate opens outward and the opener is still inside where it can't be seen from the street.
I wish it showed more step by step
Whats dimenzion stell
you're pretty close there!
I'm only watching this video for the music. Please tell me how I can get a copy of the song.
10 out of 10 on gate - 0 out of 10 on opening mechanism. With that amount of weight, it needs to be a slider or split. No doubt. That looks like a hazard to me, especially with an outward opening.
So much for DIY. You used installers to make it work
very nice gate. I'm going to build one myself but I can't decide whether to have it swing open or slide. I'm wondering about the swing open. With it closed all the way, does the opening arm prevent anyone from simply pushing it open without some sort of latch? Are the swing openers pretty strong in the extended/closed position? Thanks and nice work.
I would definitely recommend sliding gate
DallasCityOfChampions
I am no expert, but the two gate companies that bid on the installation told me the inside mount could not be done due to the gate swinging past 90 degrees.
how did you bend the top rails?
Well I get 1400lbs of steel tomorrow and one project will be a 17ft sliding gate. I wanted this route but didnt have the room.
Fantastic build on your gate. I would not like to be the person stood near it when it is in operation. It would kill an Elephant. Think a few safety features would not go a miss. Alot of safety products are pretty slim line nowadays.
I highly recommended a sliding gate when possible like in this case. Seems like there’s too much stress on the hinge post. Or split the gate in half. I hate to say but it looks like a piece of art, and art shouldn’t be touched.
DallasCityOfChampions
thank you for the reply and the comments. My wife absolutely veto'd the idea of making it slide. Splitting it - would have added another $2500 to the cost. I am happy to say the post is strong and level 11 years later. "piece of art"- this made my day, thanks again.
Je veux travailler avec vous mais je suis un apprenant vous avez un merveilleux techniques que je vais vous donner quelques-unes des techniques et vous aussi
If you wanted one gate it should've been rolling... that gate should be opening in two halves....
How much is that door worth?
5 dollars
Nice gate but too heavy for those j bolts hinges
A lot weight. I don't think I could handle alone for diy.
20
такой вес навес не выдержит !!!
இது
The pro's bent the top pieces for you? No rookie can do that. This is not a rookie project.
hi friend me welder werkas bangladsh
I cannot believe that you used skinny hinge bolts. Those will shred soon.
3:21. The force is acting to pull it away and down.
no - all scroll work was premade. I am in no way that talented.
