Best Buy Will Probably Disappear Soon As Perfect Storm For Bankruptcies Hits Major Retailers

  • Long gone are the days when Best Buy ruled as the top electronics retailer in the U.S. The retail giant is not only losing ground on the market - in March, it reported a 45% decline in its annual net income from 2022, while domestic revenue fell by $13.5 billion - but after reports of mass store closings and plunging consumer demand, it looks like the company is hanging by a thread. What went wrong? A lot, according to retail experts. The chain’s business model, internal operations, and financial health are crumbling, but tracking down Best Buy's biggest failure requires a much deeper look at the way the company conducts its business.
For the longest time, shoppers have been reporting customer service failures at the retailer’s stores. They have been taking to social media to rant about bad experiences with pushy or unhelpful employees, not to mention the inefficiency of the company’s delivery service.
On top of that, experts at RetailCustomerExperience.com highlight that the electronics retailer lacks one of the most important aspects of its business: innovation. It isn’t offering anything different from what other bigger market players do, failing to differentiate itself in this tough market. Meanwhile, operational costs continue to pile up. Best Buy expanded rapidly in the '90s by purchasing smaller chains and transforming them into its big-box format, a strategy that seemed successful - until it wasn’t. "The problem with the creation of the big stores is that Best Buy is now saddled with the costs of that vast square footage," Chen added. And Best Buy didn’t consider the long-term outlook. "They did not realize how fast disruptive forces would turn their stores into liabilities instead of assets," he continued.
Now, the chain is starting to retreat from physical retail as it tries to weather the storm. After announcing a large number of store closings in April, a few days ago it just revealed plans to shut down another 70 locations this year. Financial analyst James Zeoli revealed that the company's chief executive officer, Corie Barry, said during a March 1 earnings call that hundreds of locations were candidates for closure this year. "Although this occurred pretty abruptly, it's not a surprise," Zeoli said.
The troubles of the electronics store chain remember a situation described in Ernest Hemingway’s “The Sun Also Rises.” One character asks another how he went bankrupt. “Two ways. Gradually, then suddenly,” he said. Now it feels like Best Buy is doing the same, just as many big box retailers have done in the last decade.
First comes the financial imbalances, poorly managed by executives and further exacerbated by stock market volatility, then the economic scenario dramatically changes and sales growth collapses. At the same time, consumers discover new exciting retailers that provide what the company is not providing. The financial collapse comes later. But if history is any guide, the second part, once it starts, will be quick.
As with many large retailers unable to cope with innovation and new consumer expectations, the company will continue to sputter on fumes, slowing down bit by bit until one day it just stops moving.

It’s no longer needed. TVs now a days last so much longer too… like I got a 3k tv (the cost not the visual aspect lol) and it’s been perfect since the day I got it. I have my old one still too that works like a dream and it’s from 2011 lol so I honestly don’t think that it’s a wonder that they aren’t needed when speakers last longer, tvs last longer, games are no longer discs really, cheap toys and media related toys can be bought online at like 40,000 different retailers. Vacuums last longer, don’t need bags, laundry units are worked on so they last much longer now a days, Maytag closed down Best Buy alone for that shit lol. But in all reality, there is nothing the average person needs from Best Buy that’s not sold at Walmart, Meijer, BJs, Costco, Sam’s Club would offer with better customer service.

10 years ago, I bought an Acer portable and when I got the invoice from the sales rep, there was a charge or around $45
    for ' configuration'.
Before I had time to ask anaything, I wa told I had to create an email adress with microsoft. I had to do it right away,
chose a user ID and a password and give him the newly created address RIGHT AWAY.
Once I was done, they told me to come back in 5 days to pick up my computer, even if they have several in stock.
The point was that they had to ' configurate ' it.
When I got my Acer, my desk to page was already filled with icons like Yahoo, CNN, Facebook, VISA, Home Depot,
and on and on and on.
Then I realised that all these sponsors hap paid Best Buy to incert their icons in my ACER.
I know today that it was what they ment by 'configuration'.
But for the life of me, I still don't know why I had to pay $45 to look at adds. I had to deleete them one by one.

Back in 1970's L.A. we had Federated Stores with Fred R. Rated (Shadoe Stevens) as the TV spokesman. Circuit City killed Federated...then Best Buy killed Circuit City.
It was early 1980's and the Apple IIe had just come out. I had bought a bootleg Pineapple computer, which was a knockoff of the Apple IIe. I was shopping at Federated store on La Brea and Melrose buying my computer gear. Later on, I moved over to Circuit City. Dot matrix printers were the printer of the day. They were graded on how much they could hide the dots to not look like a dot matrix printer. Internet? We had Compuserve and BBS bulletin boards.
Before BBS / bulletin board forums were going mainstream, we had mailing lists in the early 1980s. People would send in contributions and someone would print out on a dot matrix printer and snail mail to the subscribers. Back then the gov hardly did a thing and it was not life or death living having to watch what D.C. did every minute of the day. That's the score, Bub.

Well for the mass majority of the retail sector to blame the internet and claim that the internet is killing brick and mortar is frankly stupid simply because every single one of these retailers have been the internet for the past 24 plus years with the website that you can buy directly from.
That's sad I will say when it comes to electronics it is true that a lot of people really do prefer to buy online simply because that's where the selection is if the brick and mortar retailer actually had a better selection they would probably still be able to do better than they are but of course places like Best buy Staples etc they seem to think that everybody still wants to buy a fucking cordless phone for the landline in the house for $40 or more.
Of course it's impossible for them to stock every computer tablet or phone known to man.
But as a rule overall in retail online sales only make up eight to 10% of all retail sales at any given time meaning 90 plus percent is still happening in the brick and mortar environment the real reason these stores are collapsing is due to the mass amounts of debt that they have taken on a couple of the fact that there's an income deficiency across the population by the way none of this is new it's 10 to 20 years old.
It's actually closer to 20 years old!

Disagree about Home Depot. They're one of the few retailers doing it right. If you buy an item online, Home Depot will pick it off the shelves and put it in a locker for you in the front of the store. When you pick it up, just run inside and open your locker number. It's the best of both worlds - you get your product immediately and with no wait for shipping. If you buy online from any other retailer, you have to walk up to some customer service desk or something and wait for someone to pick your order. Try ordering an item online from WalMart - pickup is a total nightmare! It takes MORE time to order in advance there!

Good luck getting any service from a seller who is hundreds of miles from you. And what is sold by BB is not in stock. Their stores do not seem to sell merchandise; all they sell are extended warranties. Try to buys something and you get "I recommend or Buyer Protection Plan" before they even answer any questions. Over 11 years ago, Downes predicted the demise of Best Buy, including a comment about the two ways a business collapses, slowly then suddenly. Today, for America, Biden represents suddenly, as hundreds of CIA-funded brand new Greyhound-sized buses stream north from Darien province in Panama north to the Rio Grande on Highway 1 (Pan American Highway). Unfortunately, this is true. I’ve experienced a pushy sales clerk trying to get me to purchase a MacBook after I clearly explained I came in there to play around because I’m waiting for the 15 inch MacBook Air, but the dude literally was like ( yeah but the pro is much better) he failed to realize that I didn’t need a pro, and I was a Windows user that wants the 15 inch screen!!
Not to mention he wasn’t properly groomed!! There seems to be lots of funky people working there 😂

There are lots of gems at COSTCO and The Deal Guy here on UA-cam highlights monthly deals. Because of how much I've saved, when my mom's membership is up for renewal this year, I am going to buy my own membership.

I’m not a marketing expert, but I know what I like.
A friendly comfortable atmosphere with someone to answer my questions and say thank you for shopping with us.
The lockdowns really hit retail hard. I think we’re just now seeing how hard. Add inflation, poorly qualified help high minimum wages and unattractive out of style stores, and down they will go.
Amazon makes getting what you need almost too easy. You think of it, you look it up, order it and you have the product sometimes in the same day without having to deal with traffic or going out in bad weather.
Me personally, I hated shopping when the mask police wouldn’t let you shop without chasing you down and making a scene. I’m glad that’s over with.
I think we’re going to see many more retailers fail in the near future and it’s going to take years to recover from this terrible inflation.

I had been a loyal Best Buy customer for the last ten years but the last two I’ve been going less and less because of poor customer service and two warrenties I bought with them were never honored because they changed what they covered. I wanted to get a shelf fixed on my fridge and the tile me warranties don’t cover accidental damage and the same with my TVs cracked screen. Amazon, new egg, Walmart will all cover that so they lost my bussiness forever. I don’t want to give my money to a bussiness that has no interest in helping me fix my electronics and purchases when something goes wrong…
