I love how this shows that Heather McNamara was telling Heather McNamara to kill herself. Usually you see Heather Duke turning into Heather Chandler, but I feel like the change into Heather McNamara makes the most sense. It also gives the idea that Heather Duke was once in Heather McNamara's shoes. Like a: "You didn't help me when I was in this state, who's laughing now?" sort of feel, and I really admire it.
Love this reprise. So much tension. As always, the animatic is awesome. #Rant Time: I don't think Duke is as bad as everyone says though, especially not as bad as Chandler. I'd dare to say Duke shares a lot of McNamara's insecurities, as she was always seen as a buttmonkey and Chandler constantly humiliated her, amusing as it may be (SHUT UP HEATHER!!). So when Duke finally stood up and became the new "leader", she was in love with all the attention. She finally wasn't just a punchline, she was someone to look up to. With the mindset that she had become strong, she found McNamara weak for not stepping up like she did after Chandler's death. Duke also gets manipulated a lot by J.D. in the movie, which is funny because even when she's in control there's still someone who's bigger than her and who will keep torturing her. It's really kind of sad. I'm sorry Iif I didn't make much sense, but I like Duke. I actually like all the Heathers and kind of pity them, but that's a story for another day.
I agree! I do love Duke's character. In the movie, JD is the one that encouraged her to step up and become the mythic bitch she is by the end. And in the musical, she goes "I don't have to shut up anymore!". She's yet another person who got trampled on in the past, but found herself in the centre of all attention and LOVED IT. She's not exactly the sole contributor to McNamara's suicide attempt either. It was the whole school joining in and mocking her. Indeed, Duke started it, but it was the scale that it escalated that broke McNamara!! I feel like the Heathers are way more fleshed out and more human in the movie lmao

I'd say that all the deaths of people she personally knew piling up can really do a ton in anyone's psyche, especially someone who's as weak willed as our yellow cinnamon roll. Ms. Fleming and the adults in general being so useless may be the strongest reason for her hallucinations and suicidal thoughts (her suicide attempt does come just after Ms. Fleming's ridiculous [and hilarious] song). Of course Duke's cruel bullying is a motivation, but she's far from the real reason. Yeah, the Heathers themselves are more fleshed out in the movie, but not in the traditional "wow they're so relatable" sense like the musical goes with. It's in a much uglier, more cynical and subtle way of saying that nothing in this world is as black and white as it may seem. Chandler had a small, yet effective moment at the houseparty where she spits at her reflection in the mirror after being coerced into fellatio. Plus, she's nowhere near as bitchy as she is in the musical, which almost paints her straight up as a Disney villain, which is kind of sad since the movie was so good at subverting the common high school tropes (it is a deconstruction of the "love makes bad boys good" trope, after all). The musical is great, and it's at its strongest when dealing with the characters and their emotions, but it's not as great when dealing with the social commentary/satire and the impact of the plot. At least in my opinion.
The choices made this so much darker somehow. The sudden appearance from behind as it's all in her head, the slowly expanding class, and the abrupt cut at the end? Well freaking done.
I was singing this and my dog walked up and laid on me so I kinda ended up singing this to my dog and my mom looked at me like I killed someone then I kinda felt bad like "I didn't mean it baby I love you"
Heather McNamara didn't deserve any of the pain she's going through :'< honestly she's the only one of the Heathers that wasn't really mean in my opinion. I swear she's just a little sunflower who has anxiety and probably depression and if I could pick which heather should die it should be Heather Duke. (not just becuz of this song)
Oh Mcnamara was fairly mean! She's the one that compared Martha to the pig pinata and dressed the pig up to look like her; also the one of the two Heathers that sat in a car not caring if Veronica get date raped or not. She might have had anxiety or depression, but she was also genuinely shitty to others. At the end, she was willing to change herself to be better, and that was what made her more likable to me.

I know im seven years late to this but can i just say ìn your lifeboat animatic (which i cant comment on :,3) you portrayed it completely differently from what ive seen before, the way i took it is that you see it so mcnamara feels guilty for the deaths of her around her (kurt, ram, heather C) and she thinks that duke is gonna ultimately end up destroying her / has alredy destroyed her so much tht she thinks she deserves to go, masterpiece.
