I disagree with Ghostly Prison being a “F.” Ghostly Prison is one of the best cards in my Elsha deck because I have only a handful of creatures. It makes it harder for me to be attacked when I don’t have a lot of blockers (which is about 80-90% of the time).
I think the same. The only way that it should be a F is in a meta where combat damage wasn't relecant. Otherwise is a udefull card, I see a lot how people forgets the player with this card in play at the combat phase, even when they don't have blockers. Just think how many times they don't pay for smothering or ristik.
Yeah, if your meta usually includes 1-2 decks that go for win by combat (Stompy, Go-Wide, Voltron....) this card can save your ass. Especially if you have some synergie with your theme. It falls behind in the end game due to removal and big mana pools. But in my experience it forces the beatdown decks into a war with another opponent during the mid game, so you can watch the fireworks. Sure if you play pretty much exclusevly on level 9+ combo tables this will not work, but thats no fun for me anyway.
Totally agree. Fight an elfball deck and say that it’s not at least useful. Highest 30 cards? Probably not so much but if you’ve ever gone against a go wide deck that started with sol ring and mana crypt? It’s good, it’s has it’s places. Probably a C+to a b- IMO.
UA-cam recommended me this channel a few weeks ago, and i gotta say you guys are POUNDING out the good content. Keep it up, wishing you steady channel growth.
Landtax is a definite B+ in monowhite for the looting/rummage effects. It's also one of the few cards that can pull out enough lands to actually have thinning that is worth noting. If you start building around it and similar cards like Archaeomancer's Map you can get it to do more. Add in Extraplanar Lens, Lotus Field, etc... And you keep your count lower so the triggers occur more frequently.
I'm now getting back into mtg after a 5 year absense. Your videos have been awesome and are making me think completely different and I've now decided I am gonna try commander thanks to your videos
you guys are extremely good at keeping each video fresh and interesting. i don’t even play white in any of my EDH decks, but you guys are just so damn entertaining and charismatic i gotta watch! keep it up, nerds.
Ghostly Prison and Propaganda together make it pretty hard for your opponents to attack. In my Jeskai Spellslinger, it slams the door shut on attackers while targeted removal deals with the other threats.
I have only played Magic for 3 years, my first prerelease was Dominaria and I been exclusively been a standard player until I found you guys and have helped me a lot, finally bought my first deck with Lorehold this year and your upgrades worked top notch for me! I just got sick of how broken standard had been and rotation sucks and Mana bases always changing and needing 4 copies of stuff all was too hard! You guys single handedly converted me to a format I thought I would never play but now I'm all in so Thank you so much!
Gotta disagree on path to exiles ranking. While giving an opponent some ramp is worse than life, it is still just another version of swords. There's literally no reason not to include it alongside swords.
Awesome series guys! Would love to see more. As a new player, reading the card doesn't always explain the card. Understanding the card in gameplay situations is very helpful. Keep up the great work!
I have to disagree with the Ghostly Prison F. It's not an A, but there are so many times in games where people say "Oh yeah. I guess I'll go ahead and swing" and you can say "pay 2?" And they respond with "Oh, I'll attack someone else instead" It won't save you from a game winning play, but it can easily redirect 10+ damage over a game, and it DOES hard shutdown token swarms. Also, Land Tax as a C?? Even if you only get one trigger, 1 Mana draw 3 is so far beyond the curve I don't get why you would cut this unless you were worried about your deck looking too competitive.
Ghostly Prison - as the token player, more than half my decks are go wide strategies, varying effectiveness but can absolutely shut down some of them if I don't have the proper removal in hand (I'd probably put it as a D+, though against me it's probably like a C+, I've liked it less and less as I've played - back 2 years ago, it was in every deck basically at our table, our decks were definitely all board based): * Omnath, Locus of Rage (I can't feasibly pay the mana for the tokens I make, there are ways to get around it like Warstorm Surge, but there's only a few options for that in the deck - primary wincon is to get a bunch of 5/5s and smash) * Slivers (naturally go wide synergies, I don't play any infinite combos in this deck) * Rhys the Redeemed (tokens tokens.. there's only so much mana to go around) * Kykar, Wind's Fury (anthems and tokens build) * Anowon, the Ruin Thief (going wide with creatures, and ideally mill a creature from each player to draw) * Hope of Ghirapur (voltron deck, not really affected) * Liesa, Shroud of Dusk (unaffected, though, it can matter sometimes if I want to play something in my hand and I need to hit that person) * Zaxara, the Exemplary (is a token deck but heavy mana strategies, main wincon is to get an infinitely sized trampling hydra to connect to face) * Meren of Clan Nel Toth (not really affected but I don't actually have a wincon for this deck, so there's that) * Krark, the Thumbless // Sakashima of a Thousand Faces (attempt at a high power level deck, combo deck, unaffected) * Rin and Seri, Inseparable (built to be more lifegain and control, so not too bad) Always love these lists - definitely agree almost every rating.
I think Grand abolisher puts in way more work than you realize, you're just not able to see it because your opponents are literally unable to do anyting
I would like to see one video each per color, as well as a separate video that goes through multi-colored cards, that outlines the top 5 of each of these topics: Removal, reanimate/recursion, card draw, card selection, ramp, single card win cons, counter magic(if any), color wheel breakers. So it would be a series of 6 videos. I think this series would help many people with designing their decks. A side note, I did really enjoy this video, of course I did not agree 100% with all the cards or reasons you gave for some of the cards you chose for this video, but then again I mostly play Cedh. I do realize you mentioned this video was not a Cedh video. You guys are doing great, keep up the good work.
You guys are great! I just showed my friend the tune up for the witherbloom tune up, he was so stoked(just got him into Magic). Thanks for the content!
Loved the video and y’all’s content as a whole. Great honest input on stuff! I like to hear y’all’s opinion on new and existing cards. Honestly though, I would’ve given Path to Exile a B+. You’d be hard-pressed to find much removal that is more efficient than PtE that exiles a creature rather than destroys. Running both Path and Swords is almost like running two copies of the same card. Two copies of 1-mana “exile a creature” at instant speed is sweet. Al that said, I totally get where y’all are coming from with it. Sometimes giving someone an extra land can be a bit of a feel-bad.
Condemn is a very underrated 3rd copy and it puts an attacking creature to the bottom of the library. Probably a C+ to a B- for me. Oust is another powered down functional reprint sitting at a C, but Oust gets rid of Indestructible creatures for a cpl turns.
Lol. I'm building my first three color deck with Queen Marchesa. As a pretty new player, your video series is helping me a lot to understand the most played edh- rec cards better. Thank you. Though I must admit, the first card made me laugh. My idea for Marchesa was to play any board wipes, removal and forced sacrifices and then play creatures and spells that pretty much give me free reign over all their graveyard and let me play with their toys. So I play black, but I'm not really willing to sacrifice MY cards for a cheap effect, I want my opponents to sac their creatures, so they can join my ranks. And I play white, but don't want my wraths and removal to exil, so I had to leave out Swords to Plowshares! :D
I think the staples should be rated by how well they do in their respective colors, but I do appreciate the commentary on how they fare in multicolor decks
Sphere of safety is not fantastic outside of enchantment heavy decks. However, when someone has to pay 20 mana to swing one creature at you, that card feels SOOOOO good.
4:06 in a Feather the redeemed is an a + because its a repeatable emergency livegain 5:38 same but for lands, it works wonders with assemble the legion
Thanks for the video. I don't agree at all with some of the ratings given though. For instance I think that grading ghostly prison an F is just a plain mistake. Do you want to play it in just any deck? Nope. Is it a strong performer in a certain style of decks? Oh hell yes: It stops go wide token strategies, it protects your planeswalkers in superfriends, in a stax deck it just totally stops you from getting attacked and so on. This is in other words, not a card you just play in an attack heavy meta, it is card you play when you know your deck is not relying on creatures to defend itself OR needs/wants protection versus go wide strategies. Just my two cents of course.
Awesome video! The only thing I slightly disagree with is Elesh Norn. She's an A for me. I really love playing blink decks, and I can confirm that Elesh Norn pretty much shuts down my game. Turns out most creatures with good ETBs have a 1 or 2 butt. Just it's effect on getting rid of 99% of utility creatures makes it an A for me, and I don't even own a copy. To me the bump in power is the gravy, but the text that basically says "you're opponents don't get utility creatures" is the real text. And for non-CEDH, most of people's synergy is built into creatures. I just think it's power to shut down decks makes it good by itself. Just think about this... it shuts down Skullclamp in most decks!! Lol. Can't get stronger than that! Also, just writing this is tempting me to go order a copy. Lol
Daily quality videos for the magic format we love. Why NOT like, comment and be subscribed. Get these boys payed and help them keep up the good fight....
I've never tried Grand Abolisher out myself but I have the strictly worse version, Dosan the Falling Leaf, in my Xenagos deck and my god does he rumble. Unless someone's playing counterspells you cast it and they don't even get the chance to deal with it before it's static effect kicks in. It literally protects itself, asceticism doesn't even do that! Sure it needs a proactive deck but nothing feels better than slamming a Dosan/Grand Abolisher effect into a hastey Balefire Dragon Also as a side note; love the position it puts your opponents in after when they then have to choose between dealing with the new threat or risking that fresh protected hell they went through in the last of your turns again
Ghostly prison isn’t an F wtf, it’s definitely a B-/C+, one of the better edh pillows Fort/ Enchantments matter cards giving protection against go wide and tokens. It goes down to C-/D in CEDH because combat is weak in that format
Path gets a C grade!? What?? I mean I get that Swords to Plow is clearly better but this is still 1 mana instant exile effect. Surely you would usually keep both in white decks as you need multiple removal spells..
Can't speak for everyone, but if you wanted to make this video a series where you cover top-played cards in every color, I would certainly watch that 👍
god that is SO TRUE about enlightened tutor. You need targets beyond regular staples; if it isnt opening up play lines then just cut it and put in another board wipe lol
Enlightened tutor with only a sol ring target is still probably worth running, in my opinion. Its a second copy of arguably the best ramp spell in commander. Especially in white, your only real option is artifact ramp. Maybe I missed some part of your rating system, but I think it has to be an A rating. It's easily the best white tutor ever printed.
You guys are really underestimating the impact of ghostly prison and Grand abolisher. Prison is perfect in those decks where you dont have a lot of creatures like voltron decks or control decks. Grand abolisher is a definite auto include in some decks and should be a high consideration for many other decks. Many decks just want to build up a board state and then wait for the right opportunity to go off. You can even keep this in your hand until you want to go off. As long as it doesnt get countered, you can do whatever you want during your turn and your opponents can't interact. That's awesome no matter if you are a creature based deck or a combo deck.
I think any late game deck would love ghostly prison. It doesnt protect you forever, but it does one of two things. (1) it guarantees that you will get to your late game...sure you take some damage, but you are there or (2) it forces a player to use enchantment removal. In the 2nd scenario, you can say that about anything....so the 2nd shouldn't influence the ranking. Id say the ranking should be a C-. It does its job perfectly in a late game control deck. Not so much in anything else
I think you guys are awesome, I feel you could have mentioned land tax’s ability to thin your deck if you don’t mind being 1 land less than opponents. That’s to me the greatest hidden utility of the card. That is how I use it.
Play Restore Balance. Then respond to it on the stack with Teferi's Protection, after the last suspend counter comes off. You win. It's Cyclonic Rift but also hits lands lmao
Hey Nerds! I love your videos! I’m a subscriber and watch a lot ok ok I watch all of them. Can I give you one nugget of feed back? As you’re ranking these cards you’re not explaining really why you like or dislike them very much. I feel like you should go into detail a little bit more on why thinks aren’t good (swords) and why things like (path) is less good.
NN: don't play ghostly prison Also NN: cathars' crusade will win you games in combat But actually the one deck I had prison in I removed because I realized it was the opposite of what I wanted in superfriends.🙃
Hey guys - new to the channel! Love everything I’ve seen so far (including these grading videos). How do I get lucky enough to get a deck tune up? Through Patreon?
Enlightened tutor can get underworld breach. So if your running combo it's really nice tutor your win con for 1 mana. Kinda auto include in any storm deck with white and red
Red Elemental Blast is worth it in my Korvold Deck. The natural predator of that deck is countermagic and blue in general, which makes REB, Veil of Summer worth it IMO. I have been nothing but happy with REB in that deck.
@@NitpickingNerds I guess the way I see it, in my korvold deck, if there's no blue player, then I'm much more likely to have korvold resolve, draw me lots of cards, and having a REB stuck in hand doing nothing won't be a problem. It's worth it for when there is a blue player (which is 95% of the time).
Want more like these yes 👍 great topic for video... I like that I disagree with some of these but you guys address why you grade them where and for not cedh :)
A for Auto-include. B for Build Around. C for Cut. D for Don't Bother. F for Forget about it.
Pretty good memory points.

My roommate HATES ghostly prison, and also propaganda. Especially when I have them both on the field at the same time.
I think it's playable and has homes, but it shouldn't be anywhere near the top 30 imo.

Silence is really good bro, play it for bait counter or just win the game, nobody can do shit if u used silence. G_G
Nice, looking forward to see the other colors
27:07 I disagree because Silence gives me the chance to go off with my OTK combos.
love this content. can't wait for more colors.
Hey Nerds, how do we feel about Once Upon a Time, I pulled 2 copies during Eldraine so I've been trying to fit them in for Timmy reasons
Card is pretty good nothing crazy.
@@NitpickingNerds run in every deck with green, got it 😂
I think any late game deck would love ghostly prison.
Love this content guys! Keep it coming!
Keep doing this series!!!
I think you guys are awesome, I feel you could have mentioned land tax’s ability to thin your deck if you don’t mind being 1 land less than opponents. That’s to me the greatest hidden utility of the card. That is how I use it.
YES!! Please continue this awesomeness
Definitely want the rest of this series
It’s coming
Enlightenend Tutor B, Swords to Ps A? What a comparison.
The tutor is definetly A++++ and the best white card over all.
Play Restore Balance. Then respond to it on the stack with Teferi's Protection, after the last suspend counter comes off. You win. It's Cyclonic Rift but also hits lands lmao
Better it makes them sac everything
I'll rate Path to Exile as a B since you can also exile one of your own creatures to ramp into plains faster
Gentlemen, yet again you're underrating the stax card - Blind Obedience is an "A-", easy.
We love Blind O honestly but tough to give it that high of a grade
NN: don't play ghostly prison
Also NN: cathars' crusade will win you games in combat
But actually the one deck I had prison in I removed because I realized it was the opposite of what I wanted in superfriends.🙃
Hey we helped!
Keep up the good work!!!!
Will do!
I liked it! Would like to see this for all colors or even multicolors!
It’s coming
This was great! Would love to see more
More on the way!
I love this series! Continue after black!
Great video about white they really need the right deck
Also i loved the list guys do each color!
Coming up 😊
The new Eerie Interlude is Semester's End which is just a straight upgrade with lots of extra text
Hey guys - new to the channel! Love everything I’ve seen so far (including these grading videos). How do I get lucky enough to get a deck tune up? Through Patreon?
Keep going, this was great!
😅😊
Enlightened tutor can get underworld breach.
So if your running combo it's really nice tutor your win con for 1 mana. Kinda auto include in any storm deck with white and red
Complete the series!
Red Elemental Blast is worth it in my Korvold Deck. The natural predator of that deck is countermagic and blue in general, which makes REB, Veil of Summer worth it IMO. I have been nothing but happy with REB in that deck.
Nothing wrong with that. We like Veil more because 2 colors is much more likely than 1
@@NitpickingNerds I guess the way I see it, in my korvold deck, if there's no blue player, then I'm much more likely to have korvold resolve, draw me lots of cards, and having a REB stuck in hand doing nothing won't be a problem. It's worth it for when there is a blue player (which is 95% of the time).
Want more like these yes 👍 great topic for video... I like that I disagree with some of these but you guys address why you grade them where and for not cedh :)
please keep going, this is great!
