One of my fav false friends between polish and Serbian is trudno...I laughed so hard when my friend told me it meant pregnant whereas in polish it means difficult. Great video, hvala i pozdrav iz sad :D

It's so funny how there's such things as cognates. Sjecam se kada sam pitala tatu kako se kaze 'camera' na srpskom, on je rekao pa 'kamera' ahaha. I think I'm pretty intermediate with my Serbian, but I never know how to progress in my language skills. A lot of my life I've spoken pola Engleski i pola Srpski. Do you have any advice on what I could do to get better? Watch more Serbian shows, read?

If you ask me, I would probably tell you mix it up :) There are so many ways to approach language learning, but you have to find what fits you best. Reading and listening is crucial, you need as much input as you can get. But, I have to say having friends around me that I can talk to and practice has been the biggest help so far :) I mean, who is not motivated to talk to friends ;) Vidim ja, treba više vlogova na srpskom da postavljam :D

@@MojeBlu daaa slazem stobom, da vise pricam na nasem ali kada sam se navikla da pricam pola pola :''). Ja najvise osjecam sigurnost kada slusam nekog drugog u mjesto da licno pricam. Ja sam ipak povucena osoba i stidljiva pa mi bude tesko da ne brinem o kako ja zvucem ili ako napravim neku gresku kada pricam snekim. Hvala na odgovor xx i vise vlogova!! :)

Hey, you made a small mistake in your definition of "cognate" :) This is the proper definition I found from Google:
_(of a word) having the same linguistic derivation as another; from the same original word or root (e.g., English is, German ist, Latin est, from Indo-European esti )._
Basically, cognates are just words from the same root. They don't have the have the same meaning.
All the words you listed as Serbian and English cognates are Anglicized/Serbianized loanwords from Latin & Greek. Nothing is wrong with that, but here are some cognates between English and Serbian that are derived from Old English and Old Serbian. Its also possible for these words to sound different, they're cognates as long as they're derived from the same root word in Proto-Indo-European.
English - Serbian
heart - srce
new - novi
gird - grad
no - ne
root - rod
know - znati
three - tri
seven - sedam
many - mnogi
may - moći
love - ljuba
Note they don't always sound the same (e.g. _srce_ vs. _heart_) or always mean the same thing (e.g. _root_ vs. _rodi_), but every single one of these words has the same root. They all come from the same Indo-European words. For example, both "heart" and "srce" come the the Proto-Indo-European word *ḱḗr a word that eventually after hundreds of years later evolved into words that sounded very different.

Good for pointing that out! I should probably mention that the definitions of cognates and false friends (i.e. interlingual homographs) are the ones we use in psycholinguistics. So here we are not interested if it's a loanword or if it's derived from the same root. We only look at the similarity in form (which we have to calculate) and if the meaning overlaps. Thanks for this comment, I should have mentioned which definition I am using! :)

@@MojeBlu Interesting, well the definition I used for cognate is the one used by all dictionaries I've seen on Google (like the one I quoted). I guess you guys use a different definition and that's fine.
By the way, them being loanwords or not is completely irrelevant. I'm just avoiding loanwords because of personal taste. Love your vids by the way!
