Pyotr Velikiy (Russian: Пётр Великий) is the fourth Kirov-class battlecruiser of the Russian Navy. Initially named Yuri Andropov (Russian: Юрий Андропов) for Yuri Andropov, the former General Secretary of the Communist Party, the ship's name was changed after the fall of the Soviet Union. The Russian designation for the type is "heavy missile cruiser", but Western defense commentators re-invented the term "battlecruiser" to describe these as they are the largest surface combatant warships in the world. Pyotr Velikiy is the flagship of the Northern Fleet. Construction of the ship was heavily affected by the economic problems before and after the fall of the Soviet Union and it was not commissioned until 1998, twelve years after work had started. By then it had been renamed Pyotr Velikiy, Russian for Peter the Great. Pyotr Velikiy has been known to carry two pennant numbers during its service; "183" and currently "099".
1) "Admiral Nakhimov" is on modernization. Update: Universal vertical launchers 3С14 (Missiles 3M55 "Onyx", 3M14 "Caliber" and 3M22 hypersonic SCC "Zircon-S"). Will be strengthened and anti-aircraft defense: S-400 and new close combat air defense system. The cruiser will carry more than 300 rockets of different types. Modernization is planned to be completed before 2020. 2) "Admiral Lazarev" in 2014 was docked. Nuclear fuel was unloaded. Updates: unknown. 3) "Kirov" in 2002 withdrawn from the fleet and expects disposal.

Флагманский корабль Северного флота России. Основное предназначение - уничтожение авианосных групп противника. Крейсер был заложен 11 марта 1986 года на стапеле Балтийского завода (при закладке именовался Куйбышев, потом - Юрий Андропов). 29 апреля 1989 года спущен на воду. Переименован в «Пётр Великий» указом Президента РФ 22 апреля (1 октября) 1992 года. В 1998 году вступил в состав ВМФ. Предприятия промышленности проводят постоянные работы на крейсере, они позволяют в течение одиннадцати лет подряд выполнять походы в море без постановки корабля в средний заводской ремонт. Мощная ядерная энергетическая установка крейсера позволяет ему развивать скорость в 32 узла (60 км/час) и рассчитана на эксплуатацию в течение 50 лет. Для сравнения: крейсер «Пётр Великий» способен обеспечить электричеством и теплом город на 150-200 тысяч жителей. До переименования «Пётр Великий» носил бортовой номер 183, сейчас бортовой номер - 099. Это самый большой в мире действующий неавианосный ударный боевой корабль по состоянию на 2016 год.

Главным приобретением станут новейшие универсальные вертикальные пусковые установки 3С14. В эти же пусковые контейнеры можно будет устанавливать ракеты 3М55 «Оникс», 3М14 «Калибр» и 3М22 гиперзвуковые ПКР «Циркон-С», которые станут основным оружием. Помимо этого будет усилена и противовоздушная оборона: С-400 и новые системы ПВО ближнего боя. В общей сложности, с учётом зенитных ракет, крейсер будет нести более 300 ракет разных типов. 2) «Адмирал Лазарев» в 2014 году прошёл доковый ремонт. Ядерное топливо было выгружено, поэтому перспективы дальнейшего ремонта и модернизации неясны. 3) «Киров» в 2002 году выведен из состава флота и ожидает утилизации.

The 4 Kirov class boats became the Soviet answer to the Nimitz aircraft carriers. Attacking the capitol ships with multiple decks of sea launched cruise missiles as large as ICBM's. With huge Blackjack and Backfire bombers in follow up attacks. These huge bombers and ships bedeviled western forces at cold war flashpoints from Cuba to Crete to the Aleutians.

The biggest problem with a Shipdesign like this is the launcher system. Having all off them so close in the middle-front section, well if anything goes wrong while a rocket is starting it could tear the ship apart.
Sadly there are just 2 operational, and one is being repaired
God I love how Russia repainted all their ships!!! Just 10 years ago they were all different rusty looking colors...dark grey, light grey etc completely not uniform. Not anymore! Well done!!!
...any ship develops rust and marine growth if it sits in port for too long and, early nineties, the Russian navy didn't deploy a whole lot. Simple wave friction against a moving hull keeps a lot of that off.
