Miller v. Alabama | 567 U.S. 460 (2012)
The Eighth Amendment prohibits the infliction of cruel and unusual punishments. In Miller versus Alabama, the court examined whether subjecting juveniles convicted of murder to mandatory sentences of life in prison without parole is cruel and unusual.
Fourteen-year-old Kuntrell Jackson participated in a robbery in which one of Jackson’s co-robbers killed the store’s clerk. Jackson was tried as an adult in Arkansas state court. He was convicted of capital felony murder and sentenced to life without parole, the mandatory-minimum sentence for the crime. His conviction was affirmed on direct appeal. Jackson subsequently filed a state habeas-corpus petition, but the court dismissed the petition, and the Arkansas Supreme Court affirmed the dismissal.
Fourteen-year-old Evan Miller and his friend got high with Miller’s neighbor. The boys robbed the neighbor, beat him, and set his trailer on fire, leading to the neighbor’s death. Miller was tried as an adult in Alabama state court. He was convicted of murder in the course of arson and received a mandatory-minimum life-without-parole sentence, which was affirmed on appeal. The Alabama Supreme Court denied review.
The United States Supreme Court granted cert and consolidated the cases for decision.
