- I asked 100+ readers for their favorite fantasy books to read this winter. The result is this curated list of the top 10 must-read winter fantasy books (2023 update!). ❄️
Most of the books mentioned in this winter recommendations list are adult fantasy reads (with one exception that I also think you will love!).
Let me know which are your favorite fantasy reads for this winter!

I need to reread Spinning Silver this winter (I loved Miryem so much, she is such an intelligent and strong character). An older wintry fantasy novel I reread every year is The Dark Is Rising by Susan Cooper. It is somehow comforting to read childhood favorites when it's cold and snowy outside.
The Dark is Rising sounds really good! Ahh that is how I feel with His dark materials, it has so much nostalgia! I want to reread just to get that feeling again!
I read Spinning Silver last December and it truly was the perfect wintery read! I think a lot of T. Kingfisher's books are perfect for this time of year but The Raven and the Reindeer especially!
Yes!!! The Raven and the Reindeer was also mentioned! I really need to get to it this holidays!
You are one of the most fun booktubers. Love your presentation/editing/style 😄 have a great day!
Hahah thank you! I am glad finally the “fun” from the channel name is making sense 🥹🤣!! I hope you also have a great day!
@@FunFantasyBooks it sure is! Haha! Thank you!😊
I have spinning silver now pushed to top of my winter tbr 😊
Ohh I hope you love it Mel!! Let me know if you do!
❤📚❄️❤️ So many great book recommendations! I loved Spinning Silver!
Thank you so much!! ❄️❄️ ahh thank you for sharing your love for Spinning Silver! I am sure it will help others pick it up if they have not read it yet!
Thank you 😊💛
You’re welcome!!
I find it's a recurring theme that I haven't read most of the books on that list 😂 Spinning Silver is on my winter TBR, so I really hope I'll get around to it! Uprooted is on my autumn TBR still, but somehow it feels like autumn is already over 🤡 I CAN'T PUT OFF READING JANE EYRE FOR ANOTHER YEAR EITHER AAAH 😂
Hahahahaahahahahahah! I don’t know what happened with autumn 🥲❄️!! I hope you enjoy Spinning Silver! I haven’t read Uprooted but well.. I don’t think I ever will! (Unless you really love it!)
I plan on reading Project Hail Mary in January as I always think of outer space as cold and dark and The Witch Collector which has a Frost King and ancient gods. Spinning Silver is on my list of books to get this holiday season!
Project Hail Mary is one of favorite books of all time!! I can’t agree more that it’s the perfect read! Please come back afterwards and let me know your thoughts about it!! *jazz hands!* (you will understand after reading it!)
I agree with Hogfather - one of my favorite books and perfect for winter.
Can’t wait to pick it up!! Thank you for sharing! I hope it also helps others pick it up!
If you want something cute then I would recoment "The Night of Wishes" by Michael Ende. It's a midelgrade based around New Years Eve. In some way it's a tradition to read it in preparation of this holiday during December for me.
Ahh that sounds really wholesome! Thank you so much for the recommendation 🥹❄️
As a German I wonder how they translated this. The german original title is so hard to pronounce "Der satanarchäolügenialkohöllische Wunschpunsch". Definitely one of my favorites too!
@@mothdustdreams Yes, that something I wonder myself to. I can't give you the anser theire, since I'm native germarn speeker myself and so had read the german original.
But since the english titel is "The night of wishes" i'm imagining that to translate the titel would have make "a knot in the translators brains"😂 But would be intresting reading it in english just out of curiousity
Wonderful channel--you have a lot of great energy. Can't place the accent lol
This must be the one list I have read the most of! Though I'd certainly have put Sword of Kaigen there!
Hahah yay! I would have added Sword of Kaigen as well! 🥲- aaaaalso I need to give the Goblin Emperor another try!!
You did such a great job with all the picks.
The Snow Queen by Joan D. Vinge was very good.
Others might like The Left Hand of Darkness Ursula K. Le Guin (which was terrible).
Fantastic content.
Ahh thaaaaaank youuu! I am so happy you liked it! 🥹 I haven’t read The Snow Queen!! The Left Hand of Darkness was mentioned! I haven’t read it, but heard it is very polarizing!
I couldn't get into The Goblin Emperor (I plan to try again this season) but I loved The Witness for the Dead which is the first in the companion series but can be read without reading this one. It's more of a murder mystery set in this world of elves and goblins and the MC can see ghosts/the last moments of the deceased.
Okay, that sounds incredible!! I will try to give that one a try maybe before the Goblin Emperor!
Please do yourself a favour and read The Goblin Emperor! Its absolutely fantastic 👌🏼
I knooow!!! Sometime this year I will pick it up!

Everyone loves snowy books in winter... I live in Norway, its been -7° for a month already, I'm reading Dune cus my "winter book recommendation" is something that makes me think of warmer weather 😅
Hahahahaha! That makes total sense to be honest! Here in Madrid we NEVER have snow (maybe once every 10 years?) so it is something I crave, but totally understand where are you coming from 🤣
@FunFantasyBooks still great suggestions though 😊 I've read two and own three more that I am excited to read, with Hogfather being first up this Christmas
Nettle and Bone was very good!
It was!! I am so happy you also enjoyed it!!
I’ve read all!!!🎉❤
You are such an epic reader!!
Let's read Sword of Kaigen and so next year we all vote for that one :)
Yeeees! That definitely sounds like a plan!! Also! How is your edition? On track?
@@FunFantasyBooks according to the trackers it's currently at some customs office...
I still havent read Nettle and Bone
Nooooooo Beccie!!! I think you will really enjoy it!!!
@FunFantasyBooks I knoooow, it sounds like my type of story.
I think I am one of the few who thinks that Sword of Kaigen was really not good. I tried it because it was a very well loved book of many booktubers. I couldn’t get past the 30% mark. It bored me to bits and anytime I put it down I had no drive to pick it up again. The characters were so unlikable in my opinion and the story really boring. I have so many books on my TBR. That’s why I won’t waste my time with a book that doesn’t click with me. Honestly I don’t get the hype with this one.
Goblin Emperor was fine, but way too slow and the characters all had such similar names that it was hard to get through 😴
Hahah oh no!! It is terrible for me when the names are too similar! I can’t differentiate the characters 🥲
