Want to watch a runthrough of this game? I covered it on Rahdo's channel • Oath: Chronicles of Em...
Want to buy this game? You can get it from Leder Games directly at ledergames.com/products/oath-... (or go to your friendly local game store, that's cool too)
Corrections:
I say that you can use a card if you're in its region, but I should've said that you can use it if you're in it's site.
During the first attack example I should have removed one of the orange attack dice due to the Mountain's site ability.
When attacking, you can roll an amount of attack dice UP TO your warbands. You don't have to roll all of them if you don't want to.
During the victory checklist, in order to win with a vision, you need to have completed the vision, not just revealed it.

Thanks for watching! Did you notice something I got wrong or missed? Comment here and add a timestamp so I can fix it in the subtitles.
14:15 Correct me if I am wrong, but because you targeted the Mountains, shouldn't you get one dice less (mountains ability)
@@skroblas5411 Ah, quite right, thanks! I'll add a note.
@@RTFM Geeks have eyes like eagles :D
21:35 You said the scepter lets you peek at the relics as a minor action but the scepter just says Action: not minor action
@@ladygeneveve3805 The wording in this game is a little odd, but using any card that says "Action" on it is a minor action. It basically just means that you don't need to spend supplies.
Oh man I was hoping you would make a video on Oath, as I've been very interested in playing it and there is no better way to learn the game than through Shea's irreverent commentary and instructions. Thank you so much for this!
Hey thanks! Glad I could help
Getting this to the table for the first time in a year. A helpful refresh as always.
Your exacting How To's are genuinely my favorite. For others though I will say that Oath is a game whose specific brand of complexity can be more easily digested when the rules are explained with as much thematic color possible. No easy way around it but it has helped in my experience.
Wow. REALLY well planned explanation. Not a wasted minute. Thanks
Glad you liked it!
Finally getting this next week. Can't wait to play this. It's truly intruiging!
You dropped this, King 👑 er... Chancellor
Thank you, Shea! Having a lot of fun with this game, although I keep forgetting certain rules. This video makes it seem much more digestible. 👏
Glad I could help! And yeah, there's quite a bit to miss. Though I like that the designers are aware of this and added a thing in the rules basically saying "don't sweat it, just enjoy the game and try to get it right next time."
I don’t even have oath but still watched this whole thing.
Thanks! Hope you liked it!
I always look for your how to play videos, thank you for making them. Enjoyable to watch and informative.
Thank you so much! Glad I can help!
The spanish translation of the manual was perhaps one of the worst things i had ever had the displeasure of reading, so very appreciated for this! specifically the whole process of ending a match and setting up the deck and board for the next game is basically impossible to understand and made us have to abandon the game entirely.
Love how you explain things man! Thanks for this video, I am getting Oath today!
Thanks! Hope you like it!
Been waiting for this one!
Love the unique game and solid presentation! 🤘😁
I clicked because your PoK intro was so good that I wanted to know what this one would be. Did not disappoint. The following rules explanation was just a bonus 😀
Haha, thanks!
I got Oath this week! Your video is perfect!!!
Thanks!
Thank you for this! Made a quite abstract game a little bit clearer :D
Glad I could help!
I KNEW this one would be next. Can't wait to get that patented RTFM-brand Matrix knowledge download!
XD
Great teach, thanks
Hey Shea, cheers for this one. It's great.
Thanks!
Just bought this yesterday. Can't wait to play it. Love the videos.
Thanks! Hope you have fun!
This video is amazing, as per usual.
Amazingly, I still have no idea how to play, but I absolutely want to play it. Game seems rather complicated XD
Fantastic teach. There is a lot to digest.
Glad I could help! And yeah, it's a bit of a beast at first, but it definitely gets easier as you play it.
i am a fan of Meeple University but I really believe your tutorial is a lot more easy to learn.
The klingon subtitles thing is fucking genius.
Thank Rahdo for that. I got the idea from him.
well done video :-) clear explanation and good structure. We played it yesterday and it was almost smooth ;-) Somehow Cole Wehrle games are always a bit clunky to get into, but are worth the effort 100%
Completely agree about the starting choppiness, but yeah definitely worth it once you get past that.
5:22 That roll of 6 after Round Five tho … that’s a Rodney-style touch ;)
Praise be
You are a saint and I'd blow up the moon for you. Prince among men
I promise only to use this responsibility for good. Or if I think of a really cool moon decal.
At first I thought this was a guide to play a full game session in 30 minutes when it actually is a 30-minute teach 😅
Yeah, I've accidentally tricked a few people like that. Sorry!
why is the yellow pawn excitedly eating pizza? (haha, now you can't unsee it!)
So it's not just me.
This be good teaching indeed
Thanks!
That is hell of a rules for a board game. Even classical dune or game of thrones didnt have such advanced rules
There's a lot going on, to be sure, but it's worth it.
This is heavy!! Haha I want to play it so bad but man I have to find some people as nuts as me
How long Is a campaign? Id like to buy It but id like to play solo multi-handling 4 players with multiplayers rules, Explore the world and writer Little stories....what's your opinion about this idea? Thanks
Thanks for this video, helped so much with the denizens and combat.
I’m just a little confused with set-up, so the cards that are in pack A are the starting cards for your world deck and the others get added as you play.
How many games do you play before you can start over again?
And if you do start over are the locations always just random? And do you just repeat the set up (pack A) to restart
Yeah, so the first time you play, the tutorial packs will tell you how to set everything up. Then after your first game is done you'll use the Chronicle to save some locations/cards on the map, lose some denizens you played with, and add some new ones for next game.
You can reset the denizens at any point between games. It's just about preference. If you do, you can either randomize the locations for your next game, or if you want to follow the tutorial set up again, you can find the exact order of those cards here www.dropbox.com/s/yfjbun4vm95hcg3/Oath%20Deck%20Order.pdf?dl=0
Say your playing as the fox race and win. So next game you play the chancellor, but what of the fox race. Is it hidden away because you are basically still that race, or can someone else play as them, which doesn't make sense storywise?
Yeah, there's a slight thematic disconnect there. If it helps, you could just say that it's a different fox clan that has their eye on the throne this time around.
This game has solo? Hell yes.
You make fantastic videos. I love that T-shirt. Where'd you get it?
Thanks! Beth Sobel has a Redbubble store. If you search leafy meeple shirt, you'll find it.
Great video! Would you be able to tell me, how large the playmat is?
I am tempted to get the game but not sure whether my table is big enough.
Not exact measurements, but it's about 3 feet long, maybe 1 1/3 feet wide.
@@RTFM thanks a lot!
The mat plus player's boards along both of the long sides of the mat just fits on a 70 cm table.
Thanks for the effort. No idea why, but after watching this I still havent got a clue how to play :-/
Where do board game content creators go when they have a new game & 24 hours to learn it... HELLO RTFM!
Haha, glad I could help!
So, to confirm: you can put any card you want, facedown, on your advisor slot as long as you got don't go over the limit of 3 cards?. You can even put cards that are meant to be placed only on the board (the ones with the little tree icon)? once they get face up they must go on the board, but face down, you can hold them in there.
Yes, that's correct. Sorry for the late response.
@@RTFM Nothing to apologize! played the game, was fun for me but sadly my friends didn't like it, the table I got isn't too fond of storytelling and whatnot. Nothing to criticize from the game on that regard, though one thing I will criticize is the rules are very messy, and the rulebook is not nearly good enough to be up to snuff to such challenging game. And I say this as a guy who finds Trickerion easy to understand.
Regardless, it's a really nice game, shame it didn't stick on my group.
Where in the rules does it say that the defender doesn't place the favor on the cards when using defense battle plans?
Just answered my own question. It's 7.1.2 in the rule book.
for the defense pool at the 14 minute mark, wouldn't the chancellor get 4 defense dice from locations since they own, Plains, mountain, tribunal and hidden place?
The defender only gains dice from the targeted sites (plus one for being the Oathkeeper), not all the sites they own.
Oracular Pig is the greatest card in the history of board games.
Does the playmat is included in the retail version of the game?
I believe so, yes
That shirt looks like a gnarly chest hair pattern
"mr vape-cloud" made me chuckle
18:52 are you suppose to declear battleplan first, and then roll dice? (p.14)
Yes you are, which is what I describe from 17:30 on.
@@RTFM but it sounds like you determine dice pool and roll it, then decide battle plan
@@iceuni963 I'm sorry you got that impression. You make your dice pool, then choose battle plans, then roll the dice.
Mr VapeCloud cracked me up
Hey, did you get a Dresden??
I did! Filmed this video before I got it, but in the videos to come you'll be seeing it more. I'm also going to do a full video about it on Rahdo's channel.
He had way too much fun with that intro
I'd say I had the perfect amount of fun, thank you very much :D
Tell me this isn't just Cones of Dunshire the board game.
No I strongly believe that's Feudum
Cones is already a boardgame lol.
It totally is, but it’s also magnificent.
9:25 That might be the most anxiety inducing shot I've ever seen in a board game video, and I get nervous whenever the SU&SD crew puts a cup of water near the game....
BWAHAHAHAHA!
@@RTFM After remembering the mention that you borrowed this title, I too had a heart attack when I saw the match!!!
I really like the look of this game, but fear my head would explode trying to learn/teach it.
It's a tough one for sure, though if you get a group that's excited about it and willing to play multiple games, the 2nd time is significantly easier than the first.
18:26 *once per campaign
Fair point. I think that's implied, but I'll put a subtitle in, just to be sure. Thanks
I'm playing this at a friend's house soon... jesus this is complicated.
It definitely starts off that way, but I've found that it starts to click after just a round or two.
Does Quinns know you are in his living room?
I thought that this was house rules for a quick 30 min game. Lol
I'm still not sure how to feel about legacy board games, I kind of like the idea of a game evolving with the players but I also really just prefer to be able to play a board game with anyone and not have to worry about what happened before.
This is not a legacy game. No destroying cards, no drawing on the board, nothing like that. It’s, for lack of a better term, legacy-lite. You prep the deck FOR the next game at the END of each game based on the winners preferences, and carry over some of the denizens / sites that were controlled by the winners.
Oath is a funny game cuz every other board game is like "learn x in 5 minutes!" "Rules of x in 60 seconds or less!"
And every oath rules video is at least a half hour long
Is this game made by root people ?
Yep! They're both published by Leder Games, designed by Cole Wehrle, and art by Kyle Ferrin.
some of your sounds go squeak. i wonder if it's my headphones...
It's not. It's my throat. I finally figured out how to edit it out though, so that won't happen in future videos.
I like men
I usually find your videos quite illustrating, I usually use your TI4 video. But I found this game's rules (not your video) completely unconnected and convoluted...
This is a lot. 😅
What is that damn whistling noise when you speak? Incredibly distracting. Can you put a lowpass filter on your audio?
I despise this game. Your video is wonderful but using it to try to figure out what was happening in the game I played is just making me angry. This game is peak arthouse nonsense. I'm never playing it again.
Thank you for this video. But I do have to say this is no game for me. I would like to try it but only looking at it makes me want to choose another game. It looks like a child did the drawings and the same goes for the board game Root. Same person did both games I believe. A game should be inviting and tempt your fantasy and this game does not even come close.
And it is very expensive. I would much rather buy Twilight Imperium or Eclipse 2nd edition or Dune Imperium and get some money left over for expansions or another nice looking game.
Congrats to everyone that think this game is a "looker".
Its perfectly acceptable to say "I don't like how this game looks" without being salty that other people do.
