My take on alternative keyboard layouts some things very simplified (i could go on about why i dislike qwerty), but this is for people that are interested in switching to a new layout that still unsure about how it will feel from day to day. i do a quick rundown on neo, colemak, dvorak, workman and a bit of rsthd and halmak.
Switching my keyboard layout to neo was the biggest step in my keyboard journey as it would affect basically all my future keyboard choices.

I actually taught myself Dvorak in high school, so some 20 years ago, but switched back out of convenience because of Dvorak's prevalence. Currently working on my end game layout which is a combined English/Spanish layout. Basically an adapted Latam Spanish (ANSI Enter). I switch so quickly between the two languages that I need one layout without switching layers. Granted, there aren't that many differences so it's relatively easy to come up with something good. I rarely see people talk about their multilingual solutions. Adding Portuguese capability (more diacritics and an additional character) would be a big bonus too.
Yeah, there is a real dearth in the ergo keyboard community when it comes to non-English input of any kind.
My solution to allow French input without dedicating a top row was to use adjacent-keys combos (on the special characters layer to avoid accidental triggers).
Basically, [ + ( sends é, and so on.
With the amount of accented characters in Portuguese, you might be inspired to use easy-to-trigger dead keys like ^ but in general I recommend the combos method to virtually "enlarge" a small keyboard for a "big" language :)
@@cielvague Yeah, that's the approach I'm going to take. Spanish layout does that for é and ü. I'm just now getting a keyboard which allows dead key programming, though. It's not just the accents, it's the need for different punctuation sometimes too.
@@robertdaly9162 By different punctuation, you mean characters like '«' ? Careful, as these are generally handled differently on different platforms / input methods. On Linux (IBus), for instance, these kinds of special characters are generally produced with the right-alt key, while on Windows it's generally software-dependent.
@@cielvague uff, I'll have to see. I mostly mean that, for example, Spanish doesn't use apostrophes. It's just a question really of figuring out how to incorporate everything in such a way that it's intuitive to use.
@@robertdaly9162 But the way, how are you going to design that bilingual layout? I wish to do the same at some point and considered using the method used for the "White keyboard layout" ( github.com/mw8/white_keyboard_layout ). He basically wrote a layout generator in Rust to optimize not only single character placement, but also digraphs and trigraphs.

I would add that the BEAKL family of layouts are worth a look too. They are ortho native, and emphasize the "home block" of 9 keys on each hand rather than the "home row", and minimize the centre and pinky columns. Once you realize that qwerty 'W' 'E' 'I' and 'O' are easier to press than qwerty 'A' 'G' 'H' and ';' then you get the ideas behind this layout.
I also came to the realisation that once you are using "not qwerty" you may as well be the only person using your layout, having a layout bundled with the OS doesn't really help. Just accept that you will have to use qwerty when you are using a computer that isn't yours.
Sometimes, I use AHK.exe for colemak mod dh in the other computer. If I am not type so much in the others keyboard, just look at the keyboard and type what I see. Some ubuntu support xmodmad and some don't. So if I really need, I just bring my mechanical keyboard which have modified with a colemak mod dh layer.

Nice video! About a year ago, after buying the ErgoDox, I decided to switch to Colemak. My typing technique wasn't great, so switching layout really helped me beating the muscle memory and relearning my typing technique.
Because I used the ErgoDox, I first considered Colemak-DH or Workman, but the biggest reason why I chose Colemak was that I wanted a layout which was (natively) supported on all my devices. Since I sometimes had to work on my laptop, I didn't want to use Qwerty. I also moved all the switches on my laptop. And even on my iPhone I use Flesky keyboard, which also supports Colemak. So now I never have to look back at Qwerty.
very nice, yes the mobile integration got me struggling a bit I still use qwerty there as I couldn't find any nice software keyboards with neo and the ones with customizable keymaps were a bit unresponsive :|

I touch type on Dvorak and only on Dvorak. I learned it because I never learned to type properly on Qwerty. I was a 35-year old professional pecking out 100 page documents with two fingers on Qwerty. It was ridiculous. So I invested the 10 hours it took me to learn to touch type on Dvorak using some typing tutor app (don't recall the name). If you don't already touch type on Qwerty, then learning a better layout (Dvorak or maybe Colemak) IS worth it. If you already touch type on Qwerty, then I can't say. Maybe not -- unless you suffer carpal tunnel because Dvorak at least minimizes finger movement a great deal relative to Qwerty.

I am using neo2 and I can 100% relate to "flying through" text it feels just so nice to type compared to qwerty or qwertz

I was looking for a layout to replace Dvorak because of some pain in the right hand. Instead of flipping Dvorak around (to make my left hand do more work) I wanted to improve on Dvorak, while I had the chance.
I love how Dvorak's home-row feels. Finding that while removing some of the awkward movements was the plan. For me, rsthd is spot on with what I have been looking for. The man who created rsthd was also in search of a Dvorak replacement before creating his own. The layout just makes sense to me, but it's hard to explain.
The first days learning rsthd my brain said no, but my fingers said, Yes! My brain needs to get over it.
My tip to finding a layout is sort of simple. Looking at the new layout on screen, touch type a paragraph or more of common words. This will be slow, but its to feel the common finger motions, or the gist of the layout.
thats actually a very good tip and im also interested in testing rsthd for me but i need to check if switching between 3 layouts gets too confusing and will cause me to stop using neo
If you have time and don't mind running down the mountain to crawl back up, have at it. I find it rewarding and also a good brain workout. Being able to swap layouts quickly would take some work. Although, once a layout gets faster it becomes easier to remember , which you probably know.
I use the new bone layout which is the successor of neo2. The KOY layout should be even better, but it is awkward to use cut n paste where bone and neo2 keep them on the left hand. Now i am looking for an split ortho linear keyboard but those are difficult to get in EU.
I really appreciated the explanations of the goals behind each layout. When you do want the öäüß and you switch to get them, are you changing layer language or both, like z and y switch places no matter where they are? Danke im Voraus :-)
I am using the eurokey layout on the oc and there I can do alt + u to get ü, the layout is otherwise the us layout and i dont need to switch the layout with this
Optimized keyboard layouts usually use the bottom row a lot less so using mod-taps on the bottom row instead of the home row may help avoid misfires.
BTW you forgot to show the E key on the RSTHD layout which is on the left thumb.
I recently started learning colemak after mastering dvorak for 2 years.
One thing to do is use different keyboards so you don't get confused, and make sure to use each layout daily so that you don't forget any.
@Biao Xian Pang Personally I'd say dvorak as I find it much more ergonomic, however it has a much higher learning curve compared to colemak.

I made a layout called bean, and so far it feels really good. Definitely beats colemak, but the oi bigram is on the right ring and pinky so thats taken some getting used to
I like custom home role motifier key but hate that I occasionally activate some sort of shortcut and jumped to some random place and insert random stuff, close programe switch workspace, because I just press a tiny bit longer on those key. plus noticeable input delay on those key.
I changed over to Colemak DH sometime around October last year. I was still on a regular staggered keyboard at the time. Prior to that, I was trying to learn Workman for about two weeks but gave up on it because there were too many one finger bigrams. Switching to Colemak was better than Workman for me since I feel as though most of my fingers are used instead of just a few fingers doing most of the work. I then got an ortholinear keyboard, the Preonic. The switch wasn't hard at all, took about an hour as I already learned how type "properly" on Colemak using all 10 of my fingers. Since the Preonic is QMK compatible, I am able to switch between Colemak and Qwerty in just a few buttons in case I needed to switch quickly.
Cut is an X that's a cross cut visually, Copy is C, and then Paste is a V which is an arrow pointing down.

What do you think of the norman layout? In kde plasma on linux the 4 supported ootb are dvorak, colemak/dh, workman, and norman. I am interested in all except dvorak.

I really appreciate this video but for some reason I sort of feel more confused as before. I got myself a planck EZ and wanted to use a custom layout. I already spent some hours into creating my "lower" and "raise" layer to be nice for programming but I have no clue which base layout to choose. I don't really want to learn multiple and then choose. It seems like you're very happy with NEO2 but at the same time you removed the "umlauts" from the layout, which makes me question if I should do the same or not. I am a fellow german so from my POV the main benefit of NEO2 were those umlauts that you decided to remove. Because of that I wanted to go for Colemak DH but now I am not so sure anymore.
I mainly removed the umlauts as my software layout doesn't include them as I switched to the US qwerty layout as this is easier on my hands for programming with a normal row staggered keyboard and I like to switch to a laptop every now an then so I don't always have my custom board connected. so Neo I setup as a hardware layout in qmk but send keys for the us layout so there is no software issues (some code editors use cmd + / for commenting lines and that breaks on the German layout as this would be cmd+shift+7, also the Neo software layout had some problems for me as well)
so I use the compose key for umlauts (on Mac alt+u + u is ü) so I would take into consideration what system software keyboard layout you would like to use first and then see which letters/symbols it offers this just was what fits my workflow quite well
Please I use an ergodox keyboard and would really love the modifier settings file with pressing keys on the homerow that really sounds interesting

I learned Dvorak in my teens and I just can't make the switch to colemak or something more friendly.
When I get around to doing a custom keyboard I'll probably add a second ctrl key that switches to qwerty for shortcuts.
I hope that's not just the typical "the grass is always greener on the other side" effect as you will most likely already have a lot of the typing benefits from dvorak (eg. neo includes the same keys on the home row except it switches H with R and also used the vowels on the left half) so "upgrading" is a debatable thing when you compare the effort with the benefits
@@JanLunge Well the hotkey situation could not be worse than on Dvorak. And when I was working as a transcriptionist I could really feel the right-handedness of Dvorak.
The more modern layouts are much more balanced and I could feel that with Colemak as well.
I used it for 6 weeks in 2015 and I'm actually still faster on Colemak than QWERTY lol

Hi, Jan. I checked out your Wsplit keymap and it's in Neo. Would you share your current halmak keymap? I have no idea how to implement it in QMK, especially to activate QWERTY when holdind mod keys.
I currently have not setup most of these keymaps in qmk unfortunately, also I would not recommend making all modifiers use qwerty but just adding one layer that has macros for most used shortcuts so that macroLayerKey + ( where z would be in qwerty) would result in ctrl+z which in qmk is `LCTL(KC_Z)`

Ok for me there's a much simpler question: Using a Laptop on Windows 10 home 21H2 64 bit, I need to flash the BIOS. I got a bootable CD-ROM, but when I type commands, I can't find all the sings I need. The Keyboard layout for DOS is apparently much different from the usual qwerty or qwertz one we use in everyday life. Where can I find a layout table for DOS, please?

One thing related to the physical layout that I have noticed since getting a redox (moved from a gh60) is that when ever I sit down at a more traditional layout I do try using the thumb cluster even if the keyboard doesn't have it. Is this something you've also noticed?
yes I miss the thumb cluster on all keyboards that don't have one I also currently try to keep the assignments on the thumb clusters very similar between my different keyboard builds so that I can keep that muscle memory
so when you add the modifier keys to the home row, how do you press the combo of the modifier plus that key, for instance in 1:23 how do you press cmd+N+E?
I use the home row modifier on the other side so there is some switching between what side you press the modifier on for what key is needed but you get used to that fast
How would you do this on an iOS like iphone? i know about swift but if i want to make one i heard its difficult

i actually dont use them often as most of my typing is in english but if I need to I use the compose key which I have set to the menu key so its seperate from modifiers. I played around with shortcuts like alt + a for ä but some software didn't work for me with it so i stayed with the compose key

i dont mind qwerty ive been using it all my life so its something im used to, im not a proper touch typist only really using 4 fingers for alphas 2 pinkies for enter shift backspace etc and thumb for space but i hate the positioning of ,.?: on qwerty. its such a pain when im not writting casually and actually have to include punctuation
Since some time the keyboard shortcuts sits at the same place no matter the layout.
Edit: Probably depends on how you have you keyboard layout applied.
luckily I have a Logitech G13 for gaming and there I can map every Key to any character makes it really easy to have the standard keys set for gaming :)

Ok so here is the thing, im currently thinking about switching to an other layout since i feel weird typing with the qwerty one, yes it does feel way better when it comes to typing in english but in the end i feel weird while using it. this video was really interesting but im still wondering which keyboard layout i should actually pick up as i know it will be a pretty big change in the way i type etc.
id like to have one that is more ergonomic and feel better overall but without losing things like punctuation and such since thats the main reason i switched to qwerty in the first place.
apparently colemak would be the "better" option for my use case but i wonder if its really the case, again i don't want to switch layout every few days so id love any insight about that.
I really enjoy typing in colemak dh, this is my favorite layout right now. but i still use qwerty daily on other computers but also i don’t see myself switching from colemak dh to anything else for the foreseeable future

My solutions for QWERTY keyboards: kmonad for laptop keyboards, and hasu USB-USB converter for non-programmable USB keyboards.

kmonad is amazing. I actually used it already while still building my custom keyboard. That way there was actually basically no transitional period when it was finished
I'm using SharpKeys for changing layout because switching from programmable keyboard to laptop keyboard is a pain, but Kmonad looks interesting. Thanks for the suggestion
If I was to choose an alternative layout, I would choose Dvorak as it is a standard install on all operating systems. So if I were using another persons system or even using a computer at an internet cafe, I would be able to switch layouts easily without needing to carry around a USB or have the admin install anything specific.
While those who hate the Dvorak layout will say that it is not better than Colemak, my person experience with both says that it is a more comfortable typing experience than Colemak. The rolls of Colemak seemed to fatigue my fingers more than the hand alternating. Why am I typing on QWERTY now? I prefer keeping to the standard layout.

Tapdance is awesome, but I diagree with anyone who thinks that there's no significant benefit from remapping 'hotkeys' to the same key POSITIONS for the new layout.
I use Workman-P, so my vvim nav keys are YNEO (most inportant being N and E - the keys in the same POSITION as J and K in QWERTY).
The average mid-tier programmer has soomething like 80 vim bindings - and more for tmux; treesitter; lsp, and so forth.
Anyone who likes 'suckless' also has a bunch of bindings for lf; some more for neomutt; a few more for i3.
It's REALLY critical to be able to just hit those 'chords' by reference to finger POSITIONS. I remapped a BUNCH of [key] vim shortcuts (window management) to w[key] three years ago; it gave me the idea to remap all fzf keys to f[key]; and so on. So when I started to use Harpoon, a bunch of 'h[key]' maps followed.

So now,
b[yneo] are for buffers (left-next-prev-last);
w[yneo] are for splits (left-next-prev-last);
... and so forth.

Well, Qwerty is the standard. There is no other reason to use it.
I was thinking about switching layouts but I am not sure if it's worth it.
I don't mind setting different key bindings for a game. I do that anyway.
But I don't want to "relearn" vim key bindings.
About using other keyboards, I don't mind carrying around my planck board. That's the advantage of a small form factor, it is small :)
And soon I will build my own laptop with a planck keyboard!
Especially since I have my planck with hand lubed switches, I can't type on a trashy laptop keyboard any more.
I spoiled myself to much. I'm still not sure if that was so clever :)
Have you tried some nice lubed tactile switches? Typing feels so nice. I am surprised about the difference to stock cherry switches!
relearning the vim keys was not that bad for me as i switched to arrowkeys and all the other ones were attached to the letter not the keyposition in my head so even pressing D with another hand was not too hard to get used to, lubing tactile switches would be nice but I have a hard time getting keyswitches at all here my goal is to find some light activation force low profile tactile switches for my next build but i guess I'll use what i can get.
@@JanLunge Yeah, that might be the similar to me. It will be mostly hjkl. I should not have problems with other keys, because I have the letter ( i for insert) in my head and not the position the letter is on my keyboard. I might give give other key layouts a try when I find the time.
I got my switches (everglide jade black) at drop.com. They were pricey ($65 for 70 switches) but they are really nice! I think it took between a week or 2 for them to get here (Germany).
KBDfans have a lot of switches to choose from.
I was actually worried about a to high actuation force of the everglide black. They have 67g springs. But they feel really light! I guess that comes with the lubing. If you plan on lubing tactile switches, a bit stiffer springs might not be as bad as you think.

When you started learning your non-QWERTY layout did you periodically use QWERTY during that process to keep in practice with it?
i did not practice with qwerty but i did use it. right now im switching over to colemak dh and at the same time im working on my qwerty speeds as i didnt use it much they got quite low over time
have been thinking about this for a while now, it seems like its probably not worth it, I like the idea of home row mods and less keys but I think characters being similar to other keyboards you come across is more valuable than the comfort of using somethink like colemak.
I think I read your article earlier today, you're saying the exact same things in the same order, your video is very good but some of the cuts are really jarring
Move 4 hot buttons of qwerty (e,t,i,o) to the home row. Thats 80% of any possible benefit for 10% of effort.
Almost no impact on hotkeys. Depending on your choices - minimal impact on the gaming.
Ortholinear is a lifechanger.
Split is a pain in the ass to use with mouse. If you have no pain syndrome i wouldn't bother or got one which could combine to monoblock.

Yes I switch between qwerty on my macbook and colemak dh on my pc everyday
And also yes it does work on the same device as well, qmk keyboards support custom keymaps so that you can have 2 keyboards with separate layouts on one pc

If you use common keys as modifiers, don't you get into problems accidentally triggering shortcuts when keys rollover?
yes the main part to learn is that keys are only tapped and not held down. tou can set this duration in the firmware settings if you increase the tapping term you need to wait a bit longer when triggering a modifier but then its a bit easier to learn how to properly tap the keys. technically with default setting you need to let go of the key in less than 200ms i set this to 250ms for colemak dh as there are a lot of rolls and i will decrease the timing when im used to tapping on the rolls as well
Does anybody know a custom keyboard leyoout for Polish Language. We got a lot of additional letters, so You normaly use Right Alt, and specific key (A, E, O, Z, C, X, S, N). Not all of them can be Capitals, buto most of them. Separate layer don't look like good option, because you use them as frequent as other. Basicly we have 32 letters (bu neve use Q,V,X, exept in non Polish words, so we need them).

I have no idea how people can use these boards might need to do a bit of reseach on that, i can't even think about removing a button from my thumb cluster. but i think you still need a lot of chording but neo on that would be an interestimg thing to test
@@JanLunge These kinds of super-reduced keyboards are meant for stenography, which uses chording, a special code that has to be memorized, and special software. Although the Giny is extreme even in that category. More like an experiment than something actual stenographers would actually use. In any case, this is not meant to be used like a keyboard, more like brainf*ck for your hands.

Since you are using an ergodox:
Why didn't you move the enter key and backspace key near the space-bar? Why is left shift on the second row? Why is there a dead key on layer 0, the bottom third key from the right.
What is the purpose of that almost empty layer 2?
The standard layer 6 has a key to put the system into flash mode. I kept that on my keyboard.
I will post a neo2 variant of my keyboard somewhere this weekend. Just replacing my layer 0, 3,4 and perhaps drop my numpad layer First I have to read the original German Neo2 website a bit more to fully understand the idea.
@@hcjkruse ok so at the time I needed modiferkeys way too often and so I had those on the left side as the homerow mods didn't work with fast typing speeds I only found these options recently for my ergodox, so I got the modifiers on the left, shift on the left and backspace and enter on the right more like a normal keyboard. also I dont like to have keys on the keymap that I cant remember so because I could not fit all arrow keys in the right corner I just put left and right there.
the empty layer 2 removes the umlaut macros I got in the lower left corner and replaces them with / - = for coding and at the time also for keybinds in games.
yes a reset key is nice to have but I was fine with using the reset button on the back.
today I updated the keymap a bit and moved the modifiers around in the bottom row and put backspace and space next to the lower and raise keys more similar to the default layout also as I'm now using the eurokey layout in combination with neo on the board I need to change the macros a bit and at the same time added vial support to the board for easier changing of the layout tutorial for that will follow someday but I added the config for it on my blog to download as well just now, also after using the ergodox for so long its quite hard to fit all keys on the planck that I gotten used to, so I might take some inspiration from your layouts

Colemak DH can make any normal keyboard ergonomic. It's great.

"NEO" layout works great for German, maybe a little worse for other languages. I study it.
You can't tell me the Vim keys h, j, k and l make any sort of sense on other layouts. They just don't. Any other bindings I'll buy, but not those four.
Right they are not on the home row anymore but i use the arrow keys that i have mapped on a separate layer on the home row. That way i dont rely on the hjkl keys at all

QWERTY is terrible but as you just said you'll have to switch to it for some reason anyway.
Another reason not to switch is that I don't find myself typing for extended periods of time, I actually need my keyboard to do more than just that and funky layouts get in the way of that sometimes.
There's also having to use another computer and not being able to type anymore because your muscle memory has moved on from QWERTY already.
Its funny that you say its feels like your fighting the keyboard when using qwerty, thats specifically how it was designed. Its layout spaces commonly used letters far apart to prevent jamming of the typewriters for which it was designed. I think we need to have a worldwide vote and upgrade the design to devices that were invented in this century.
Ich würd' bei den AdNW-Varianten schauen. Neo ist doch nicht sooo optimal und ist heute sicher mehr empfehlenswert als neues Layout zu lernen. Ich rede von der Buchstabenanordnung. Die Ebenen, Home-Row-Mods usw. sind unabhängig zu betrachten.

Have you tried using jbak2 keyboard app on android phones? I started becoming familiar with my new layout by coding it for the phone. It only took me a few weeks to become as fast as QWERTY with the amount of texting that I do.
