      Although now that I think about it, if they were casting The Simpsons MCU, Bart would probably end up as Spider-Man. Flanders would probably end up as either Bruce Banner or Captain America.
      (I guess that would make Homer/Marge Tony Stark and Pepper Potts in this analogy. But Homer is probably more of a Thor, personality wise. Whole thing gets messy quickly.)

    I think the non character-focused nature of this episode works because the main character of the episode is the whole town in a sense, the real character arc is the development the community goes through as a whole. The ending isn't about Flanders but about everyone, Flanders is just a framing device. Maybe the writers were at a point where they built up the world so much they felt they could rely on it as the anchor of the episode rather than some specific characters. This would probably be a bad episode for someone who doesn't know anything about the side characters in the show, but it works when the viewer is deeply engaged with the world.

    • @TheRealJims
      @TheRealJims  5 років тому +47

      Yeah, this episode feels like one they could have only produced after the first 3 seasons or so. That was kinda what sparked the review. Even their bigger Springfield stories tend to involve one specific theme, one little character arc around someone in the Simpson family. But this one doesn't, and still decides to go for the heart-warming ending. It's kind of a miracle that this episode works so well.

    The funny thing is, even though I have watched this episode a million times, this might be the first time I actually realize that Flanders doesn't really play a part in most of the episode even though it looks like he is the main focus in the end. It's weird. But I guess it still works since the flow of the episode is so good. It follows Bart first, discovering the meteor and follows the whole Simpsons family when they have to decide what to do, and then they go to Flanders to seek cover and the focus shifts to him. It just works because it is all connected. Also, this episode has some great jokes.

      Me too, now I’m starting to think if this has happened in other episodes too. Time for a simpsons scavenger hunt.

    • @Tillyard86
      @Tillyard86 5 років тому

      Maybe they didn't originally plan for the person standing on the hill to be Flanders, it might have originally been just a random townsperson. They just found when they finished writing the ending, Flanders fit that role perfectly based on what we had learnt about him up to that point.

    • @The_RedVIII
      @The_RedVIII 5 років тому +2

      @@Tillyard86 I don't think they would just use a random person especially since Flanders becomes the focus so much once the Simpsons reach the bunker. Given Homers despise of Flanders I think they probably always written that part t o be him, since they needed Homer to vote someone out and Flanders made the most sense, even if he wasn't in the episode much before.

    • @Tillyard86
      @Tillyard86 5 років тому +3

      @@The_RedVIII A friend of mine had this idea for an alternative version of the scene where they are choosing who should leave the shelter.
      Basically, they would find that literally every person in there had some sort of purpose, except for one random townsperson that had never appeared before, a character created purely for the sake of this plot point, kind of like Disco Stu.
      In other words, a character the writers could quite easily kill off if they wanted to and it wouldn't affect the ongoing plot of the show. Therefore we the audience might actually think they were going to die. But then the rest of the town still join them on the hill at the end.
      My friend suggested they could go full lampshade and just have someone say "it's so strange that you seem to have no purpose in this town at all, no one knows you and you don't know any of us, it's almost like you were created by a writer of some sort to serve some kind of plot point."
      That was kind of why I suggested it might not always have been Flanders in the script.

    This episode has one of my favorite bits. The whole segment with the fighter jets and the pilots arguing about taking money from the military only to have their parachutes disintegrate and culminating with them fist fighting after they hit the ground, never fails to make me laugh aloud. Honestly, the whole first 5 mins or so is amazing. Plus you get the dark/evil skinner joke with the principal Kohoutek which is named for an actual astronomer that discovered a comet in 1973. Honestly, I could go on and on about the writing in this episode being some of the best in the series, but I’ll leave it at this; Bart’s Comet is definitely a top 10 episode for me and if that upsets you, don’t curse me, curse the man who invented helium! Curse Pierre-Jules-Cesar Janssen!

  • @jvgreendarmok

    I like the way the Big Butt Skinner weather balloon keeps coming back. It's the reason why Bart is made to work with Skinner in the first place, it's what distracts Skinner so Bart can discover the comet, and at the end it's destroyed by the comet and demonstrates how useless the Flanders' shelter would actually have been.

So the connection between the Skinner balloon and the astronomy in this episode not only goes way deeper than you thought, but they telegraph it onscreen in a way that almost nobody would ever recognize.

    At the height of the coronavirus crisis i thought about this episode a lot. It was at the same time relatable and heartwarming. I live in brazil. Close to 2000 deaths per day. There are people dying as i speak. Dealing with the sentiment of impotency without resenting yourself from the things that you love is hard. Like, really hard. At this point we've got used to this nightmare. It will end, sooner or later. Some people try to ignore it completely which by the way is astoundingly selfish, some embrace it to the extent of spreading fatalistic melodrama. I do neither of those things. I try to cope with the sad reality of losing loved ones and at the same time learning how to keep my head up during tough times like this. I am not a god. I dont have control over these once in a lifetime extraordinary situations i may or may not go through during my life. Dealing with it is essential to remain sane. So, i look up to flander's serendipity when facing what is, possibly, his last day on earth. Of course im bummed out by it, but you know what? I wont let these fantastical ddestinythings get in the way of my personal faith, my enthusiastic childlike way of living life. If this is the end, it shall be a peaceful, forgiving end. Fortunatelly, slowly but surely, things are getting better. This isnt the end of the world as we know it (sorry r.e.m). But those weeks of true personal terror and uncertaity made me appreciate this gem of an episode even more. Was already personal favorite, grew on me even more.

    Perhaps this is just me, but I used to have the misconception that it's the popped Skinner balloon that hits the shelter at the end and causes it to collapse. Finally on my latest rewatch I noticed that actually it's just the shrunken comet itself that hits the building. I was a bit disappointed by this realisation because I loved the idea of the balloon being a Chekhov's gun that's vital to the final plot twist rather than just reappearing for a callback gag that doesn't affect the plot. I guess a balloon destroying a building would have been less believable.

    Similar to Majora's Mask when that clip was in the video I instantly thought of that.
    Shock, Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Grief and Acceptance when Ned Flanders was alone on the hill before everyone joined him.

    Showing a town reacting outrageously to their impending doom, with the EXCEPTION of Ned Flanders, is in itself, a bit of a foreshadowing of the Flanders scene. Flanders is very disconnected from the town throughout the episode because he is arguably the safest. But that makes him a more obvious target to jettison. Not that they SHOULD, but on the face of it, it's not the MOST surprising.

    I completly forgot this was a season 6 episode. For some reason I kinda remember this episode as being much later in the series. At the very least late season 7.
    I find it funny also that you didn't put "Bart Sells his Soul" in your top tier list, considering your history with that episode.

      It's weird, when I was picking out episodes for that Tier List, I was like, "Which of these have I already over-praised on this channel?" I think doing Top 10s messes me up where I get hesitant to randomly spoil stuff for future videos, lol

    I have to add possibly my fave joke from this episode. They’re all crammed into the bomb shelter, and they’re starting to bicker. Barney demands, “WHO’S touchin’ me?!” And Skinner goes, “I am!” And Barney, joyfully, “OH! Okay!” 😍 lmao 🤣 This episode is possibly my fave from this season! This video helped me figure out another one of the countless jokes that never fails to make me laugh!

    When Daria did their musical episode (which was the style at the time), I remembered seeing an ad for it where there was a scene just like the one at the end here w/ the crowd singing "Que Sera Sera" or one that sounds a lot like it. Of course this wasn't in the final episode, so perhaps I was just blurring the two memories together.
    Did anyone else remember seeing said ad?

    When I was a child, this episode gave me a fear of meteors/asteroids, including thinking I would see one every time I looked at the sky, and having nightmares about the end of the world almost every night. Sometimes the nightmares were different, and the moon crashing into Earth actually was one of them, but it took a few years for me to get over that.

    I do like that were it not for Homer regretting his jerkassery almost immediately and inspiring everyone to leave the shelter with him, literally everyone in the entire town _except_ for Ned Flanders would have died, given that the tiny piece of remaining comet destroyed the bomb shelter.
