Maintaining your interest whilst learning guitar

  • We all get frustrated/bored/ confused on our "guitar journey".
I can remember the temptation to throw a loved instrument across the room (Tip - don't do that!).
    1. Teachers & lessons
If free You Tube videos give you all that you need, that's fine. I am concerned about how helpful a structured series of lessons built for everyone can be useful for all - as an online or face to face one-to-one teacher/mentor, I've discovered that everyone learns in their own way, and the teacher needs to work out the best way to guide a client to both determine what they want to achieve, and the best way for each client to learn. (It should also be fun!)
    2. Review your music collection !
You personal choice very likely reflects the music that you would like to sing /play. Look/listen to some of favourite albums/artists. Find new inspirations.
    3. Watch, listen, learn, and network !
Go out to open mics, music clubs etc. Watch what others are doing.
Find a good player, Talk to them about their music and maybe ask if they would teach you.
Is there someone at a similar level to you? If so, chat to them, perhaps suggest learning together
    4. If all else fails - and online one to one appeals - mail me:

I find playing with a group helps me learn. I can sing, and then listen to them play. I am to a point where I look or listen for guitars with a different voice.

I think that setting modest goals can help. If you only have a big goal, like “I want to learn to flatpick fiddle tunes” you run the risk of getting frustrated because the journey to good flatpicking is a long one. But if you break the big goal down into smaller goals, like “I want to learn the Lester Flats G run” you have decent shot of reaching that goal in a reasonable amount of time, which gives you a sense of progress.

One more thing! Learn songs! Learning songs helps you not only learn your instrument helps you sing the melody while you play. Chord-melody so important.

don't learn to play the guitar, just play the guitar, and keep playing guitar every single day for your entire life, that is the only method that works.

Easier for some than others. What I would say have been teaching one-to-one for five years now is that no two people learn the same way. which is why I don't offer a standardised suite of videos like many. Everything needs to be tailored for the individual.

@@SillyMoustache , I taught full time for many years. every single student vastly underestimates the amount of time, effort, dedication, etc. it takes to be successful at music. And I don't mean commercial success, I mean music success. all that said, there is one sure fire way to get value out of your time and energy in music, and that is to practice and keep practicing. As you well know music is a journey and it never ends, and you never stop learning. we are all in the process of learning to play guitar.

Hi, and thanks for your kind words. Remember that I have acquired my "collection over 25 years of buying mostly used, and selling/trading. Being focussed as to what instruments you want/need helps - and I'm now 76, so they'll all be on the market sooner or later!

Back when i got my first guitar, many decades ago, you couldn’t prise it out of my hands it went everywhere i went, to the toilet (great acoustics) bathroom, to bed and even to my grandparents when we went at weekends. I had no problem with maintaining interest, i lived and breathed guitar.

I guess us older guys hit a glass ceiling just with the anotomy/ mobility of our hands / brains / energy etc but playing with other people will drive you on always, if you don't have anyone go out and find someone ❤

Excellent advice Andy. I would add that on UA-cam its like drinking water from a fire-hose! Go with one teacher as you said and learn from everyone!
Btw: is that an Eastman guitat? Couldn't make out the headstock. Regardless beautiful guitar. Take care Andy.

      @SillyMoustache  2 місяці тому +1

Hi Steve, it IS an Eastman. 2020 E40-00 which was a short run "special, initially 20 for Europe and 20 for US, but it is now on their website. I have to say that Eastman guitars are consistently very good, but this one is very differently and finely built.
If only they'd make an E40-0 and an E40 -000 and an E40-DS (12 fret dread).
