    Hmm, in our DIY bike repair shop I always tell our visitors that it's crucial to wipe down the chain after greasing it so that it doesn't build up grime and dirt on the drive train to not wear down the drivetrain prematurely. I do this as well for my own bikes.

    • @Cyclingismywholelife
      @Cyclingismywholelife Рік тому +4

      I’m wondering the reason for the heavy oil on the chain is to keep the road salt and sand from having access into small parts of the chain.
      When I was in the desert we would over grease bearing to keep the sand from reaching the inside of all the inner components.

    I like that you mention only doing work the customer asks for. Sometimes as mechanics we think we know what’s best for a vehicle but lose sight of how the customer uses the bike. What works for us, may not work for them, causing issues. Great video as always.

      @Bikespeeds  Рік тому +1

      Absolutely! We get a lot of comments asking about why we didn’t do certain jobs and the simple answer is the customer doesn’t want us to. Not every customer wants their bike restored it’s all about tailoring the work to their needs and budget. We appreciate all the support as always🧡⚙️

    When there's new technology or something you've never worked on before, how do you learn what best practices are?
    One reason all my bikes are basically the same is because, FD excepting, I can just about muddle my way through a fair amount of basic maintenance before I pay a mechanic to do the stuff I can't or requires specific tools.

    Funny how you removed a generic chain and installed another non- shimano chain. Use shimano! Also I noticed you kept the shimano 105 level derailleur cables with the blueish tint. If the chain is worn out it’s about time to replace the cables as preventative maintenance with little cost. Your labor out ways the exclusion of replacement of those oversized diameter derailleure cables.

    I always wash my bike and make sure to grease my chain after every ride. I don't bike in the winter here in the midwest in the US, it's just too cold and the salt on the roads corrodes everything. When something feels off or needs adjusting I pop my bike on my stand and give it a quick adjustment. Last season I started to get a clicking noise that sounds with every pedal stroke, I tightened up everything that I thought it could be but it's still there. Do you have any recommendations?

    Another winner, a quick question though. Do you find problems with through axles sticking in place ? I've not got disc brakes but I can't think of anything more annoying than not getting axles out if I had a puncture.

    • @Bikespeeds
      @Bikespeeds  Рік тому

      Yes. We see it day in, day out at the shop. That’s why we’re so obsessive with our lubricating, we’ve seen just about everything stick but particularly axels🧡⚙️

    Nicely done chaps as ever 👌🏻 Was on my way to bed then noticed the new vid so turned all the lights back on and sat down again to watch!

      We don’t actually know when this chain was put on but this was the riders exclusive winter bike and she does train quite seriously so it’s possible. Thanks for tuning in as ever🧡⚙️

    Great video thanks on a brilliant bike! I have the exact same bike and I've done a shed load of miles on it since last summer. It's been a lovely bike. The free hub/cassette is wobbly and either needs replacing or stripping down and servicing/bearings replacing. I've struggled finding where to buy another incase I need it. Do you know where to buy a replacement freehub for this bike (Diverge E5 Elite)? Thanks for your help. Best regards, Stuart (aka Stuggy!) :) ... I'm in the UK, Durham

    Re: Greasing the brake caliper bolt. For me, it's a little too close to comfort having grease that close to my pads. I would be afraid that if it gets wet, like in the rain, oily/grease could run down to the caliper. Or when I clean my bike, I often spray de-greaser or other cleaners onto my bike, and there may be potential for that grease to run down.

      Absolutely, chain waxing is the ideal way to go but the reality of our current weather is that we’ve had snow 3 days this week and sun every other day in between so it’s not quite the season for it. Thanks for watching!🧡⚙️
