- Danish potter, Anne Mette Hjortshøj lives and works on the small island of Bornholm, situated in the Baltic Sea.
Our documentary gives a gentle and revealing insight into one of Denmark's leading potters. It follows Hjortshøj's daily life; collecting clay from the local beach for her glazes, throwing and making pots in her studio, and talking about the firing of her two chamber wood-fired salt kiln and its role in producing the decorative aspects of her work. We learn of her influences both within and outside of the Danish potting tradition and the inspiration she takes from the nature of the island.
Her pots are characterised by a quiet dignity, entirely in tune with her surroundings and with the greatest respect for both beauty and function.

Biography - Anne Mette Hjortshøj began her career in ceramics with a student apprenticeship to fellow potter Phil Rogers in 1998. Rogers has said that he was apprehensive before he met her; with her arrival, however, he knew instinctively that Anne Mette was not only humble and attentive but greatly talented, displaying inner strength and determination that will ensure a long and creative career.
Anne Mette has built three large kilns in her native Denmark, the latest a two chamber wood firing kiln built in September 2011 at her ramshackle farmhouse on the west coast of Bornholm. Though all her pots exhibit her desire to challenge herself in glaze and form, her slab bottles are certainly Anne Mette's tour de force. Her pottery combines beautiful aesthetics with a function befitting the hardiest domestic ware.

Id love to live her life. With that much peace and nature. She’s a wonderful woman with such beautiful values.
We agree!
I love the potter, her pots and the kitchen is sublime.
I agree...the kitchen looks so peaceful!
A lovely film, thoughtful, inspiring, gentle, peaceful. Thanks for all you are doing Anne Mette as it brings some much needed beauty to this world.
Thank you so much!
What a wonderful lady..... her spirit is quiet and shines through
Anne,What a beautiful soul you have,Thank you!
Lovely. I really enjoyed that. It's true that there's so much stuff in the world. We should be thoughtful about what we put into it, and mindful of the resources we use up to make those things. Beautiful. Thank you.
Well said!
what I like about this video is that the aesthetics are not forced upon, so called based on "being moral", that dictates what's right and wrong, which is pervasive teaching in Korean art education in general, including pottery. In terms of "mastery", there might be right or wrong, but it keeps one away from feeling what's beautiful personally, the personal conversation and journey with clay. Her way of approach made me see that. So much thanks to her and the video :)
Thank you for your thoughtful words
Calm, lovely lady.
Anne, you make so beautiful things, you are surrounded with them, you are beautiful! i like a lot, blesses
my passion is bow making from natural materials only. this is inspiring seeing the parallels between my passion and this one!
She is so Danish . My Danish side of the family is exactly like her. Simple, calm and natural.
I love listening to you, passionate about ceramics
Thank you!
I have been interested in this wonderful art of clay for a little while now. This video just confirmed for me that I want to learn this craft! Fantastic video!
What a delicate personality she is.
This is so purely beautiful
Incredible! Thank you for posting!
Lots of love from Turkey, Bodrum. Thanks for the beautiful video I enjoyed it very much.
Gorgeous and inspiring!
Thanks for sharing
I'm finding the artist's life to be quite fulfilling myself.
That's great news, keep it up!
I loved your film about your work and life in Bornholm. Also to learn about your use of local material in your glazes. I have used fireplace wood ash for several years and always try to find a single batch of ash that provides a natural texture and colour. I was taken by your idea of adding iron-bearing (common) clay to an ash glaze. I have to try this. Happy life to you Anne. I will eagerly look forward to more video of your works and life sometime. Peter Pots.
This is a wonderful video - I really enjoyed what you say and what you do - truly inspiring - thank you so much!

I love this it is so meditative and meaningful, thank you ~ Jennie
i really like her !!
Beautiful!
It was like clay that was gathered from the beach was a reflection of the surroundings when used as a glaze. As above,so below.
Thanks for your comment
Loved this video!
Inspiring and heart felt
Quietly thought provoking.
Thanks interesting...beautifull pots, and showing peacefully a potters life close to find back to nature it self....(I a Potter/ceramics my self half life ago) this film forced me to turn back for the peaceful creative mind)
Gracias Anne Mette, es profundo y hermoso lo que dices, cada entorno nos hace hacer cosas diferentes.
I like how you captured the essence of Anne and her world, and the earth from which we receive the raw materials. My high school students might even pay attention to the message. Quiet inspiration for me...and a relief from my congested/manufactured environment.

What is slip? Engobe?
Slip is clay that has been mixed with water so it's a liquid.
@@bonniewylie3287 Thank you. In the meanwhile i found it out.... :-)
She's so cool. Best kitchen I've ever seen, stylistically.
Absolutely inspirational video. The maker, the landscape, and the photography, all quietly amazing. The square bottle with the winter light suggested upon the glazed surface....beautiful.
what a beautiful film! actually the phrase "at gøre sig umage" literally means "to make yourself uncomfortable" (in order to achieve something).
i saw this video 6 month ago, now i created my own stamps, already have 105 i use in my ceramics, this potter is amazing, she is so inspiration!!
Love the pottery and the atmosphere of the film. A joy.
Thank you.
I've never wanted to move to a remote island where I would have no hope of ever leaving the local language to live a life of quiet contemplation while being the helpful companion to a beautifully thought inspiring potter more than I do right now.
10:34 "and it's not that i am saying i make beautiful things but i try..." right. she just makes magic.
17:34 "pay honest attention to what you are doing in life"
what you have to say is exactly why I love potter.
This beautiful film light my hidden love to pottery and cause me to come bake to my adolescence as a student to clay art...
Anne so loves what she is doing - such a sensitive lovely lady - God Bless!
Its wonderful Anne! I like the phrase Honest Attention.. Its very Deep... I remember Vincent Van Gogh said "What is done in love is well done". I can see the love for thing what you do. I wish i could learn from you. Its Beautiful.
This was different to watch
very well done video and I enjoyed watching!
How would we have worked out our past without the pieces of ceramics that made up the puzzle of human civilisation? Each shard a pointer to the way we viewed our world at the time the pot was used. Should not every potter take a leaf from this book and ask “is this thing I am making worthy of being a signpost of our time?” More is worse than less if it is fatuous and irrelevant. If one item can carry the essence of our time, once made, that is, perhaps, enough.
Inspiring to discover this potter from Denmark 🇩🇰
quietly moving, and inspiring . i loved it and will watch over and over,
What a truly wonderful piece on the artist as well as the craft. Beautiful work
It's a slow life, a potter's life; wise words.
thank you for sharing with us, the history and the process of making this clay and how you get the raw materials for your glaze. It was fascinating, thank you again.
I love how your pots turned out. I also think wood firing is so interesting. the whole process of salt firing is just intriguing. thank you for sharing with all of us.
Ohhh. So connected to this. I like a lot what she says about the responsabilità on what you put in the kiln. I had always the same feeling.
It's a wonderful sentiment
A poem. A really delicate poem
Hello Anna Mette Your wonderful exhibition was lovely to see. Congratulations 👏
Thank you very much!
Oh no, not another learning experience!
i seem to draw inspiration from this a lot. thanks for sharing.
Amazing artist - in all ways
Lovely
Thanks Susan!
Very nice work Anne, a wonderful video too. The island looks like a beautiful and challanging place to work. I love the results from the wood fire, I know that it is so much work but the results can be so right with the clay.
If you ever come to Sothern California, come by my studio for a visit, my wife and I are potters too.
Does anyone know the Danish saying about paying honest attention?
Such a beautiful movie💫🕊🌸thank you so much for sharing your passion and modesty, I am a potter as well and understand your point of view, the magical outcome of the innate desire of humans to interact with Mother Earth, the curiosity that pushes us gently to explore how far we can travel on the wings of fire....I share your love and passion, thank you kindly dear🕊💐
Thanks for the lovely video! I visited your beautiful island Bornholm while ago during the summer by chance. Oh, how I wish to be there now! Your love of beauty comes through as I watch you describe the process of your work. Inspiration for me!
This lucky woman is living my dream.......... beautiful video... thoroughly enjoyed it ... !!
I do understand what do you mean by beauty in nature and pottery. Your are living a real life in paradise amidst the nature...so excited and motivated to watch such video.....with much love....
Iron's stable but variable elemental nature means it can exist in a number of states of oxidisation, hence the colour difference.
it is not a great practice to look into a kiln when it is firing and not use protective eye coverings such as tinted welders goggles. Beautiful film and interesting potter.
prachtig
l loved listening to your thoughts about your art. Every thing you said was 'spot on' and rang true for me. Thank you so much for sharing your concepts and wonderful ceramic pieces. My very best regards.
Tom
I am delighted by the whole content of that film and the person.
Ich mache auch Schalen und Schüsseln..... immer und immer wieder. Ich liebe das!
what a beautiful film! Thank you!
Do you bisque or glaze/fire raw ware?
what a lovely, young woman she is and the way she talks about what she does, what she likes, what can happen, how enjoyable to turn pots in such a peaceful environment...so quiet without distractions so you can get a sense of timing and contemplate your work. Just lovely. Thank you for posting.
