That'll be because the MTA doesn't have any competition & the NY Government takes money out and only gives a small amount back based on the current political climate. You cam blame this on the 1930s-1940s forced buyout of the IRT and BMT by the IND which was created by the NYC (or was it the NY State?) Government because in Tokyo there are 2 metro operators, 1 owned by the City & the other by the Central Government and then there are several suburban railway operators and lines plus several bus operators, taxis and other methods of transportation which forces competition and a better service so its not only Japanese Culture that makes the Tokyo Metro/Subway better than the NYC MTA, London Underground*, Berlin U-Bahn etc... *There is more competiton in Tokyo than in London (where I'm from) which is why I think it's a better system in general except for the station exteriors...

Imo the London underground is roughly on par with the Tokyo metro (barring the central line *shudder*), but I think that overall Tokyo transport is better (including the JR Yamanote line, Chuo line etc).

Beautiful memories of my wife and I travelling Japan, enjoying Tokyo and its subway. I cannot forget the Yamanote line and the amazing musical announcements, the virtual chirping of birds inside the stations. It was like being in a videogame

This is really impressive _!_ I live in busan, second largest city of Korea. Here has also vast underground subway, But, never compete this colossal underground city. When I visited tokyo, I was not walking subway. So, I didn't know how it is huge.

My home city of Toronto is like this, too. There is a giant underground mall that connects to five different subway stations in different location, as well as multiple regional rail, streetcar, and bus stations. You'd have to walk for a few hours before you saw everything!

The owners of the underground area of Tokyo Station are the owners of Tokyo city, JR Railway, and each building. As a result, the opening hours of underground stores vary depending on the owner of the building, and the atmosphere is different from during the day. Therefore, it is confusing. Since the construction of the underground area has been repeatedly expanded and remodeled for a long period of time, no one will be able to grasp the whole picture. The large space serves as an evacuation site for people who have difficulty returning home in the event of an earthquake.

That’s the difference between a culture that has been raised to think of others and public spaces before themselves. In elementary school, there is no janitorial staff - every child takes turns cleaning, serving lunch, etc. A lesson many countries could learn.

@@quhp I only got 2 guesses. 1) something big upstairs or literally in the ceiling took so much space it forced that part of the ceiling to dip down, but maybe there's a height requirement for the tunnel so the floor had to dip to keep the height uniform or 2) maybe the floor had to dip specifically for access to those two floor panels toward the end of it for some reason.
the ceiling like others said, and instead of tightening the width of the tunnel it is better to make it passable to avoid funneling during rush hour or evacuation.

When I traveled to Tokyo I got lost in Ueno Station. I wasn't able to find the correct exit near to my hotel. I went out at the first exit I found and I had to use Google to find my way to my hotel. It was a bit scary experience LOL
