    Mr White, I purchased and read your book on the RX10. It has been great! Only real problem I have is when I view the videos I take on my MacBook it comes out extremely pixelated like an 17 year old cellphone video. Not sure how to fix it. Thank you for all your great content!

    • @alexswhite

      I'm not sure what could be causing that problem. I would need to know some more details about the issue, including what format and record setting you are using for recording the videos, and any other settings that could be causing an issue, including the setting of the mode dial, ISO, and others.

    Dear Alex, I'm a big fan of your book on the RX10 - well worth every penny spent! - I have a question. I am experimenting with RX10 astrophotography, with pretty good initial results. But I need to do both external power supply (easiest via the micro USB port) and - at the same time - shutter control (in BULB setting) via Sony's proprietary Multiport. Both need the same plug. The NPA-MQZ1K is one solution, but an expensive one (400 bucks). Do you see any other approach to do both power supply and shutter control concomitantly? Do you know whether it is actually possible to provide external power to the RX10 via the tiny multiport contacts instead of the Micro USB plug? - Thanks a lot in advance, Frank

    • @alexswhite
      @alexswhite  3 роки тому

      Hello, Frank -- If I understand your question correctly, you can supply power to the camera using a dummy battery accessory, which substitutes a battery-shaped part for the actual battery, and plugs into a power source. Sony's model number is AC-PW20, and there are other, generic brands available. Here is a link to one example: www.amazon.com/dp/B0744JGWQR/

    Alex White, you are correct the DSC-RX10 IV, along with DSC-RX10 III, can do live-view to pc.
    I hope Sony will make with firmware for zooming from 24-600 using computer.
    It's strange that the camera has electronic zoom from camera as well as with WiFi.
    Do you know how or where to adjust Aperture when camera is set in "A" or "M" on the computer (when using "Remote")?
    Again, that is a big drawback that one CAN NOT adjust the zoom from 24-600 with "Remote".

    • @alexswhite
      @alexswhite  6 років тому

      I don't have access to my camera to double-check right now, but my recollection is that you cannot adjust aperture from the computer while doing tethered shooting. You can adjust shutter speed in S or M mode, but aperture is controlled by the aperture ring in A or M mode.

    congratulations on your book which I bought and read with great pleasure. I couldn't find any other way to contact you. I have an RX 10 iv and I cannot implement the "dual record automatic" function. I have complied with all the incompatibilities that you indicate and the recording of still images is not done automatically. The symbol "dual record" is displayed on the screen. I would be very grateful if you could help me

      This feature sets the camera to record still images during video recording, but only when the camera detects a scene that its programming indicates as being suitable for a still image, such as a close-up of a face or some other "impressive" subject. Make sure you set the frequency for this setting to High, and aim the camera at a human face, and see if that triggers the operation of this feature. I recommend setting the camera on a firm tripod and leaving it in video recording mode for some time, to see if it captures any still images.

      @@alexswhite hello,
      thank you for these valuable tips. I did the test with a tripod and a 29 min recording and a high frequency automatic dual record. No photos were taken. Have you personally tested this function? What is the shooting frequency (with the high frequency option)? is this function operational if the film4 "film with trigger" tab is validated? I can send you photos of the menus of my RX10 IV if you wish on another means of communication
      best regards and thank you for your understanding
      either way, the RX 10 iv is outstanding.

    • @alexswhite
      @alexswhite  2 роки тому

      @@lalyreamicaledepoissy523 I did personally test this feature several years ago, when I first got my RX10 IV camera, and it did work. My recollection of the details is hazy now, and I no longer have the camera, so I can't test it again. But one important point is that you are at the mercy of the Sony camera's decision as to whether a given scene is sufficiently "impressive" to trigger a still image capture. I recommend experimenting with lighting, angle, distance, etc., to see if it will take a picture of a human face at a relatively close distance.

      @@alexswhite hello
      Thank you for your help. I managed to implement this "dual record automatic" function but without understanding the capture criteria.
      I am a French amateur musician and I often make videos of the orchestras in which I play. I use a tripod and I was thinking of using the "dual record automatic" function to have the film and photos taken simultaneously because the photos extracted from the video are often of poor quality. do you think this can work? Do you know someone who can help me or give me the criteria to respect.
      thank you in advance

    • @alexswhite
      @alexswhite  2 роки тому

      @@lalyreamicaledepoissy523 I understand better now what you are trying to do, but I don't believe the Auto Dual Recording feature will be very helpful to you. As I noted, it is totally up to the camera's programming to decide when to capture a still image, and I don't know what criteria it uses, other than shooting when "impressive compositions, including people, are detected." I know of no way to determine more precisely what criteria Sony uses, though I believe the function can be triggered by a close-up view of a human face. So, it seems unlikely that you will capture images that are useful to you using this feature. I think you would be better off setting the camera to record video in a high-quality format, using Movie Mode (mode dial at Movie) position, and setting the shutter speed to a fairly fast value so you can stop action. You may then be able to extract relatively high-quality still images from the video footage, especially if you are able to record using the 4K format. You can ask Sony technical support for more details about the criteria that are used for the Auto Dual Recording feature, and maybe they can provide more details.

    Hi, I use the camera mostly for video. I bought a Gobe ND variable filter, but find that any pictures, particularly at the longer zoom ranges, are not at all sharp. Unusable. Not just focussing it seems as manual focussing does not help Do you know if this is a likely problem with any make of filter, or do I just need a better one.? (Filter).
    Thanks for any advice...I have the book but no particular mention that I can see.

    • @alexswhite
      @alexswhite  6 років тому +1

      I haven't used variable ND filters to any great extent, so I don't have much personal experience to draw on, but I have read about problems others have had with such filters. Here is a link to one article: jonasraskphotography.com/2014/05/12/nd-filter-dont-go-variable/. From what I have read, there may be inherent problems in using variable ND filters, though Gobe does not seem to be one of the top brands. If you really need to use a variable ND filter, you might try Hoya or one of the other major brands before giving up.

      There is not one specific place in the book that discusses this topic. There are several settings you could try, including the Hand-held Twilight or Anti Motion Blur setting; the Multi Frame Noise Reduction Setting; or the AF-C setting with a high ISO and fast shutter speed. You also could use high-speed burst shooting, if there is enough light to stop action with a fast shutter speed.

      Turn the mode dial on top of the camera to S for Shutter Priority mode, and then turn the control dial on the camera's back to select a fast speed, such as 500 or 1000, for 1/500 or 1/1000 second. You also probably will have to make sure the ISO/Sensitivity menu option is set to a high value, as discussed in the book.

      Do you know which software that can do live-view wirelessly or tethered to a Windows 7 and 10?
      Sony Remote Camera Control (software) CAN NOT do live-view, yet all cameras Sony produced have live-view once you've switched on.

      Sony now offers a newer program called Imaging Edge, which includes tethered shooting with live view. Remote Camera Control has basically been replaced by Imaging Edge, which is available at support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/imagingedge/en/download/.

    • @angelisone

      Get out of here, close to $2,000.00 for a overpriced point & shoot Sony DSC-RX10 IV that will not do live-view on computer. So what is wrong with the picture?
      Sony will not support you with firmware on cameras that are beyond 2.1 years old.
