When it comes to authentic, real...traditional country music George was ..and remains the real atricle.. No other country singer. past present or future will ever venture into his galaxy of vocal talent. He kept it traditional country even though it meant fewer record sales and not achieving 40 plus number 1 billboard hits. Thank you George for keeping it traditional country. ..listen to you ... and Real country every day.
I agree with some of what you say but you are off base for the most part. I am a huge fan of old George but, there are so many others that kept it pure. It's today's voices that truly hurt country music but you still have a few songs that are country. One, for instance is, "Try That In A Small Town" is so country they came up with a racist excuse to keep it from being played. The Steel Guitar and the fiddle were vital part of the music but they have been removed. Country use to speak to the soul, NOW, it gone to rap and rock. They can throw the word country in the songs but that don't make it so.
Just because he hasn't been around for 40 years, doesn't mean he ain't country... Besides, if George let him sing with him then he's country enough for me.
I miss the true country music that I listened to when I was a kid, growing up in a tobacco field. "Country" music today isn't even worth listening to anymore. There are a few that sound good, but there aren't many. God bless the boys who made the noise on 16th Avenue. RIP, George. We love and miss you.
For those of you who are complaining ..I can give you some practical advice... buy the records of the OLD COUNTRY MUSICIANS that you like. The music is money driven and if you don't buy the records of the OLD MUSICIANS the record company stop recording these artists..I am not talking about buying the old records from the bargain bin..I am talking about their latest releases.OLD COUNTRY MUSIC FANS ARE NOT CONSUMERS..young people are consumers.BABY BOOMERS HAVE POWER TO BUY AND CHANGE THINGS
I am glad that George Jones allowed Dierks Bentley to sing this song with him, as he is country music; just like Alan Jackson, George Straight, and all the other classic country singers. As for Blake Shelton saying that we don't want to listen to the country music that are grandparents grow up with; I have to disagree, as I love that old country music and I know that others do too.
cgraham6 Hi: I think that if George Jones (The Possum) sang with Dierks Bentley, then he must respect him. I know that Alan Jackson and George Strait respect him. Yes it would have been nice to see Alan Jackson, George Strait, or Randy Travis sing with him, but it did not happen and I think that these two did an amazing job. Love From George Jones (The Possum's) #1 Fan Linda Beaton Of Calgary.
When you really think about it, it may now be many grandparents who grew up on Elvis and the Beatles, and they still seem to be as popular as they ever were. And even Sinatra is still popular in some circles although all those who grew up with him are no doubt dead now.
I love this song, and everything it represents. I like to consider my music tastes to be quite eclectic, but when I listen to country music, I want it to actually BE country music! I loved the George Strait/Alan Jackson version, and this one's just as good. Big ups to Dierks and Possum for doing this!
You cant replace good old country music with the crap you hear on the radio today. It has no feeling, no meaning, and no place in my play list. Classic Country Music is King!
When I heard this, it almost brought me to tears. All George could really tell a story, I should know. I have over 100 songs of his on my iPhone, all I have to say is "God bless the possum".
The lyrics of traditional/original country music told a story. The lyrics of Murder on Music Row tell a true story. Most of the shit called "country music"for the past couple of decades begs the question ... Which country? It sure as hell isn't American country music.
I could not agree more, if it's alright with you, I'm definitely going to use that hand grenade comment. That's a pretty good description. Keep on preaching brother.
All of you are so right as to how traditional country music has gotten butchered beyond recognition. That is why we are so fortunate to have UA-cam which is just about the only place you can find this music. George Jones was more or less ignored in the last twelve years or so of his life my mainstream so-called country radio as they considered him to be "too country" which has to be a bit like telling a baseball player he's too good a hitter.
I am a huge Dierks fan, but he should've released a song like "Tip it on Back" or "Breathe you In". Although with this new style of country a song like that isn't as bad as say a Lady Antebellum, Band Perry, Jerrod Nieman and even Keith Urban. Dierks shows quite a bit of traditional country influence in his music. Singers like him, Brad Paisley, Chris Young, Blake Shelton, and Miranda Lambert, are the ones trying to preserve traditional country music but also trying to please the new listeners.
Wooooo Dierks you have a lovely Voice this is the first time l heard your Voice woo well Down keep it up Thank you You both Sang lovely Awesome Voice...👍🌹🌷

@greenltc96...this was recorded around 2006 and released on a "Songs of the Year" CD by Cracker Barrel Restaurants on their own in-house music label. I can't find it on their website, anymore, but it may still be available in individual Cracker Barrel Restaurants. Some Country artists have recorded whole CDs for Cracker Barrel, but they're only available in their stores or through the restaurant's website.
Can I get an AMEN! !?! Only recording artist in the 90’s was Dwight Yoakam, other than that it’s the old real country. They don’t make ‘em or sing ‘em like they use to. George, Johnny, Merle, Bob Wills, too many to name.

Great version! Yes, those rock and roll guitars are too noisy on today's country music. For example, there was a song a while back called Don't You Wanna Stay. Was it by Jason Aldean & Kelly Clarkson? The song itself is OK, but the guitar sound is so noisy that I can't keep on listening!
The comments by Wayne are very well said, but Blake Shelton was recently quoted as saying that today's folks don't want to listen to the music their grandmas and grandpas listened to. So go figure. But crossover county is nothing new. Think Patsy Cline, for example. And country-rock may have begun with the Everly Brothers.
Blake Shelton talks about the content of the songs. He's too stupid, or doesn't want to admit it, but all the singers sound just alike. Why? Because they use the same studio musicians and background singers. It's called "radio songs". They're spit and polished and they want them to all sound alike.
In fact some of his later released critically acclaimed albums got virtually no airplay because by that time George Jones, along with many others, were considered "too country". Too country for country radio? Isn't this like telling a baseball player he can't play because he's too good a hitter? And, we can't leave the ladies out of this either. Think Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Kitty Wells, Jean Shepherd...well, you can guess where I'm going with this one. They wouldn't have a chance too.
There's a place for all of it, but "you're hot, I'm hot, we're in a truck" is getting old. It's ok to blend genres, but it's fucked up when George Jones is only given a minute on the ACM awards to make room for Michael fucking Bolton.
Dierks Bentley would not be my first face of "Traditional Country Artists", which you would basically have to be to sing this song. Almost like a murderer singing against what he did just to make his name look better.
@CaptainDesiderio When I saw him for his up on the ridge tour, and I disagree. A solid third of the songs he played were old standbys. Jerry Reed, Waylon, etc. Granted half the people there had never heard the songs before, but still. He may not be a traditionalist, but he's no Jason Aldean.
You should go listen to David Frizzell sing this song, holy cow you can feel the loss of real country music with the simpler arrangements and the crying pedal steel and twin fiddles. Also, prefer George STraigt and Alan Jackson to this version.

don't know what blue grass is??? REALLY??? The first song I ever learned on guitar was Blue Moon of Kentucky by Bill Monroe! Don't get me wrong, I think that he may "respect" the music, but I get frustrated with artists to make rock music and claim it's country, and then they go around saying how they respect their roots. It's like Waylon Jennings meets crack cocain to my ears. I am sorry but give me Ernest Tubb, Webb Pierce, or some Charlie Pride over any of the new guys!
