Melissa...KIlled on that solo!!! Awesome music! Seeing two tenor masters, amazing. And the pianist, he totally clicked with the saxophones. Awesome job
beautiful. wish i could jump on a teleporter and be in new york where it all happens. so wonderful to hear and see all this new young talent with the masters i grew up with!
Jimmy was a wonderfully encouraging teacher at Jazzmobile, interested in the songs I was writing as well as my sax playing. Great humor, deep knowledge, a youthful excitement and passion for the music.
Discovering Jazz is like discovering the gold under everybody's nose. It is sad to me that relatively so few people in this world get to discover it, maybe 1%? And I don't get why is that. People are blind to beauty.
Juan, the aestheticism in life has been replaced by commercialism - the DOLLARS. Hence, no investments in advertisements and in promotion of this beautiful music. It is (almost) the same with European classical music, globally. Good music, poor attendance! Many skillful musicians, despite their virtuosity in Jazz music, have crossed over into the simplicity of playing the so-called "Smooth Jazz" - RnB, RnR, Rap, Funk, Fusion, Gospel etc. in order to make a few quick bucks. For example: King Curtis, Lou Donaldson, Boots Randolph, Nat "King" Cole, Jerome Richardson, Grover Washington, Jr., Stanley Turrentine etc. cross over into Popsville to make a quick dollar.
It's my understanding that the honorees get to choose the musicians with whom they get to play. Heath hit a home run with Melissa Aldana and this fine rhythm section. And my hat is off to the (uncredited) recording engineer for a great music mix. One of my pet peeves is a piano that's inaudible in the section, but suddenly appears when it's their solo. Here, Pattishall is there throughout, multiplying the pleasure!
RIP, Jimmy! You did not only walk with giants - you were a giant yourself! Fond memories
I met Jimmy once, he was a nice cat. This is just wonderful.
At 88 years of age Jimmy Heath still has amazing chops at this concert.
