When their label dropped them, this live sitting on the couch singing to an iPad was the format they used to get the following they needed to finally bring about a new record deal. This was the start of a crazy career.
And so the couch became the sixth member😅 and got a starring role in Bohemian Rhapsody😄
dunno if you guys cares but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times you can watch pretty much all of the new series on instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my brother during the lockdown :)
@Davion Kye yup, I have been watching on InstaFlixxer for since november myself :)
There's a reason Bohemian Rhapsody is filmed with them sitting on a couch and the couch is traveling on a road. It's a deliberate nod to their beginning when they filmed things on a couch with a phone and uploaded their videos to UA-cam after Sony Music Entertainment dropped them from the recording contract they won when they won season 3 of The Sing-Off in 2011. They worked very hard with very little money, filming videos like this and uploading them to UA-cam . They eventually had enough of a following to release EP's and albums, even going on tours. They were eventually signed by RCA. RCA is a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment. Sony Music Entertainment is ironically the ones that block the UA-cam reaction videos. Pentatonix is a self-made band that became who they are on UA-cam by their own hard work and support of their patrons.
Scott singing I Should tell Ya Mama on You is really good.
Here's the link to that. Again a beast behind the mic
Ah yes the couch days! Bit of PTX history right there. Within a week of winning the sing off (which one of the prizes was a recording contract) their label dropped them. So, already all relocated in Los Angeles, they decided to start filming their arrangements on UA-cam. They would gather at one of their apartments (I believe Kevin and Avi's) and record on the couch there.
It's the reason their Bohemian Rhapsody video had a moving couch, it was a nod to the older pentaholics, and it showed how far they've come.
This is probably Avi and Kevin’s sofa.
You got it! This was recorded on an iPhone, no other mics, and that's what I love most about it. That tight staccato harmony in the middle, the silly clothes, and the funny lyric changes are all classic PTX. It's what made me a fan right from the beginning. I'm so glad you reacted to this. It is in these raw, low production videos that you really see their amazing talents.
You should check out PTX at the airport while they were rehearsing this song.
Hey, when you have a layover at an airport while you're on tour, and someone with the airport finds out who you are, they set you up with a mic hooked into the PA, and you rehearse a song for everyone else waiting for flights. Why not? Here's the link to the video: ua-cam.com/video/LSFeK7NrvDI/v-deo.html
The way this was recorded, there really was no EQing of voices available to them. Recorded live with just one or two mics. This was how they did their early videos after losing their initial record deal and before signing a new one, just sitting in one of their apartments on a couch. The process would take about eight months, but they put out a BUNCH of videos this way during that time...then continued to do the Evolution videos this way later on.
I believe this was recorded on an iPhone or an iPad. Not much "production" at all, lol.
I am so glad you did this one! This was literally on a couch recorded on a hand held device. I really love it!
You're spot on about the production. A lot of these earlier videos were recorded live with 1 or 2 mics in front of Kevin and Avi. I'm guessing it was a budget thing back then but only some songs got the studio/official music video treatment. You can usually tell by the way it looks.
Next recommendation: I think you'd really enjoy their original Sing, or New Rules x Are You that Somebody.
Baby PTX!!
There really isn't any production going on - it's a live recording from one of their homes at the time.
Pretty much whenever you see the "couch setup" it's a live recording. Don't believe they ever made a studio recording of this.
Yeah this was early days for PTX. It was done on Avi and Kevin's couch. I can hear the vocals just fine not sure why you could hear, that sucks.
Love your reactions! If you haven’t heard their cover of Amazing Grace you need to. Kirstie will blow your socks off!
This is basically a Sofa Song. Other people have explained it.
Great Video! And, YES, watch Daft Punk again! LOL! Now I've got to also!!! HAHAH
Loved the ending "Subscribe" melody they did .. this is the only video I've seen them do that on! #KirstinPikachu! 😍😎😋😁😂🤣
Check out Mitch in Superfruit's cover of Feeling Myself. I also second the rec of Scott's I Should Tell Yo Momma on You. Great stuff! Looking forward to your upcoming reactions. 😊
On the list!
All of their videos filmed in this format are recorded live. Their levels are better in later covers
The newer evolution videos are lip-synced. Evolution of Ariana Grande and Evolution of Rihanna aren’t live. I’m not complaining, I am a huge pentaholic. Just the simple truth
@@timsanduleac1646 are they? this is giving me an excuse to go back and rewatch them
Yes, they actually picked up their outfits at a thrift shop.
Except that the red top that Kirstie was wearing is the one she wore in "Born to be Wild" on The Sing-Off, although I think it was modified a little.
Rapping! You need to react to their cover of Problem!!
everyone already said it for you, but yes this is early days of PTX after their label dropped them. These videos saved their carreer
Please react to Pentatonix cover of "Come Along" 😊🙏
You do understand they were not using studio effects at all at this point? No eq ever that would mess with their a cappella cred. This is early enough it is in an apartment especially because you mentioned one microphone it was a big deal when they got the 2nd one for them and Avi showed it off to fans in a livestream. Can't Hold You on the other hand was done by 5th Gen Films just as Daftpunk was.
LOVE IT!
This was recorded live. So that's why the sound is a bit off. It wasn't in a studio and then mixed after.
🖤🔥🖤
Yeah their mic setup was a bit weak way back in the day for their live couch sessions. But they had the right idea behind their setup. Even in more recent ones they still have Kevin and the Bass upfront, with individual mics because Bass singers and Beatboxers are naturally lower in decibels, so it has to be that way so the mics can actually pickup their voice. If they had Scott, Mitch and Kirstin upfront, the Bass and Beatboxing would of been completely drowned out even more so than the main vocals in this one. You essentially would not hear Avi or Kevin period if they had of switched the orientation. I'm convinced that in the newer ones they also use a boom mic just above Scott, Mitch and Kirtstin in order to better mix their vocals.
I think you'd enjoy their cover of Starships. It's another earlier video, but with an actual music video, so the sound is balanaced.
They had a sponsor who you can see in the video in the beginning with the product placement with Scott's teeth 🙂
Yeah, because of how it's recorded I also have a bit of trouble hearing the trio's lyrics over Kevin & Avi in this. At the time they were living as cheaply as possible, not wanting to be reckless & spend $ for renting equipment or studio time, so most of their early videos were recorded in this style, & most the sound is still pretty good so nobody cared & they started getting more followers. If you find a concert performance that took place later then you can hear them better.
This would have been very early days for PTX prob 2012 0r 2114....I think it was filmed on a mounted camera at Avi & Kevins apartment they shared. they did quite a few early ones there and yes It's probably their couch ...lol Notice only one mike at the time too....all so very young lol but still has that X Factor quality
I agree that it's difficult to understand a lot of what is sung but as others have said a lot of the early videos where filmed on an ipad on on of their sofas. The below are all 2012 videos they did in a similar fashion except somebody I used to know. They are good early songs they did though and well worth a reaction just to see the progress of then to now.

I can't understand any of the rapped stuff either...but then I can't understand it in ANY rap song. Doesn't mean I can't hear the harmonies, though ;)
React to polo g GNF and last man standing
