I worked with large decals on military aircraft when I was in the Air Force. When removing the transfer tape, fold it back so it lays flat against the helmet and place a few fingers on the sticky side of the transfer paper that is now facing up and rock it slowly from side to side while also sliding it backwards. As more of the decal becomes visible, move your fingers back up to the area of transfer tape that is closest to the fold line to keep the best amount of control over the transfer tape and to also keep the decal from lifting up off the helmet. This technique is very helpful for anybody but especially anybody not familiar with working with vinyl.
