The old D-8 that I got to operate had a gas starting motor. As long as it was in good shape, it started well. You fired it up, let it run, then kicked in the main engine with the compression release on. Once the main engine had good oil pressure and was spinning free, kick the compression release and the old girl was running.
This is exactly why a lot of the old military equipment I worked on and came across came with ether injection. I need to send you the link to the thermal camera I juat bought. It was reasonable in price and so helpful. Thanks for sharing all of this info!
It's is hard to get parts since Caterpillar stopped showing the parts diagrams!! Really hacks me off!! There are a lot of people still owns the D models!!
Love the channel. Looking forward to the process of getting the "new to you" equipment reworked and up to snuff to make money. Much like Petey I'm sure they will end up being solid and long term valued quipment.
Yea i worked on a Drilling rig a long time ago . I think it had a Unit drawworks and 2 of those D 353 cat engines. I worked Derrick my brother was the driller . Those engines were really good ..Think they had the fuel turned up a bit . I never operated a D9 . I later on operated a D11 high track . I really enjoyed it . I pushed coal with it . There was a td 25 there and it was a ok for what it was. I perfered the track over the wheel dozers . I think a lot of places use the wheel dozers with metal wheels to push trash
Wealth of knowledge. I’d damn near work for you for free to learn as much as I could. Just watching a couple vids a month over the last 5-6 years has saved my ass a bunch of times trying to keep our old Cats running.
Jeff nice to see you’re staying busy!! Sure do enjoy watching you work. Retirement from the Navy is treating me well! I started working for the man again. I’m the assistant chief engineer at the boiler plant in Newport Ri naval base lol!! Retire they say!!!! lol not. Hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!! V/r, James Triplett
In alaska my uncles mercedes 180d had coldweather upgrades , blind in front of rad and gloplug upgrades incl hitemp wiring boots etc...he was stationed in Clear alaska...REALLY OUT THERE...LOL NO PROBS AT ALL...-60F ...LOL
That's a sweet old tractor. That phone line looked pretty close. You have some good luck hauling that cat. Every car in the free world would be on the road if I was driving.
She just needed a little bit of crack to clear her throat. You're spot on with the D8T rippers. That one they used to rip that rock i sent you pictures of I know it didn't have 6 inches of clearance when it was all the way up.
@@Jpaydirt most definitely! I don't know what these new generation engineers are thinking anymore. That new 8T they have is basically dragging the bottoms of the shanks when it's all the way up, you can't back over an ant hill without hitting them.
I watched you hook and unhook the low boy so many times, I could do it now. when it is warmer.😁 Jeff, could you install High Temp Silicone boots from spark plugs wire over the glow plugs? Don't laugh because I have know idea what those look like. I used to do that on farm tractors with the same issue. Tried packing them with silicone after putting them in place but can't say they lasted any longer but it helped. Did it on a old Gradall Excavator with a Cat engine.
Well the amount of hours that old girl has on it and the work it's still doing I think if it farts and burps when you wake it up cold like that you're doing good.We can't even spell glow plug here in Aus cheers mate.
Love the cold start videos. I think you are going to have to send the D9 to EA - Ether Anonymous 😂😂 Old D9 likes that Ether. On the glow plug issue. Could you re wire them like the end of spark plug wires?
I'm old to Jeff I don't running on all cylinders when it's cold. These young operators now they want to push in second and do everything in second gear. I guess I'm old school my dad had 8U and D6B 7G if he caught you running In second it wasn't nice. That gear was made for backing up and floating. I still and a first gear man!
Spent years in Wyoming running equipment, 16 months of winter 2 weeks summer the older equipment was the best in cold weather you could always get the older equipment running, the modern equipment was to temperamental and was not reliable in below 0 weather
HHMMMmmm 😱there is some stressful iron when they start like that in the cold.... What was that trailer dumper dumping out there when you were warming up the plugs??? AWESOME RIDE ALONG ! 🤩 WONDERFUL EDITING AND CHOICE OF MUSIC!!! 😏😏 THANKS JEFF FOR THE VIDEO. BE SAFE - WATCH OUT FOR THOSE KRAZIES 😍😍😍😍😍
Would it be possibe to manufacture a simple adaptor to allow other glow-plugs to be used? I am thinking of perhaps Volkswagen TDI glowplugs as my TDI is a fast starter in the cold.
That’s the problem… as I look around I don’t see any trees? As a young man we just built fires underneath .. and I must say timing was utmosts important … the Goldie locks effects .. to cold .. no start .. too Hot . Your on fire .. somewhere in the middle is just right ! Lol
Thanks for another episode of heavy haul school Jeff. I learn something every time. Did You use all Your fingers when You waved goodbye to that kitten when You pulled off the job ? Best Wishes to everyone at Anderson Construction.
Question. From the video of your parking job it Looks like the lift cylinder hoses rub on the engine cowl. Seems like that would cause them to fail. Or is that just the camera angle?
The phone call comes in to the boss . Driver says Boss to the dozer has broken down and died . Boss replys no worries ill grab some wrenches / spanners .
Just curious…why when you drop the trailer and then release the hooks and back under it to pick up the neck you have to put that board between the two to keep it up?…why would Murray design and build it like that?…seems like something must of broke off maybe.
Dear Mr Paydirt we at Cat wished you would build your own dozer to your specification an stop complaining about our equipment we are moving forward to be the harbor freight of the heavy equipment industry, sincerely China Caterpillar ps we're going be sailing the brand to komatsu in the spring of 2024 😂

Years ago I work a summer for a farmer in Arbon Valley, I ran a D6 with a pony motor and no starter, you had to use a pull rope. Good times!
This is exactly why a lot of the old military equipment I worked on and came across came with ether injection. I need to send you the link to the thermal camera I juat bought. It was reasonable in price and so helpful. Thanks for sharing all of this info!
Long live old school equipment. Don't have to worry about limp modes or software updates
Tell EPA to take a hike and don't come back
It's is hard to get parts since Caterpillar stopped showing the parts diagrams!! Really hacks me off!! There are a lot of people still owns the D models!!
Such a sweet sound on the cold start
Nice to hear the old girl start, even though she does not like cold (like me). Thanks for the video have a great week end.
Like I said before Sir, I just love that growl they make when she first starts up .
Love the channel. Looking forward to the process of getting the "new to you" equipment reworked and up to snuff to make money. Much like Petey I'm sure they will end up being solid and long term valued quipment.
Good afternoon from Southeast South Dakota
Gotta love the cold rattle of a d353

I love your caution sticker on the kill dozer 😂
19 degrees! Thanks for sharing your experience.
Great video Jeff always enjoy watching you move the D9 Dozer. Kenny sounds good to hauling Killdozer. Thanks for sharing stay safe Jeff.
Awesome to see You operating late in the season! 👍
As always bro a great video, nice to see the snow too. Safe travels. Ken.
Ol truck still sounds good as ever👍👍👍🦾🦾🦾

Good job Old Pal!!
Our old 9670 Agco Allis starts like that except at 45 degrees!! Cold blooded is an under statement.
I had the same experience with cat glow plugs....junk that lasts about a month. Found some used ones that are about 50 years old and they work great.
Hello from a balmy 26 C Adelaide , Australia.
Thanks for sharing your day love to listen kill dozer run and espicially like to hear old kenny pull and run he sounds big and mean 😊
My first dozer ever was a 9G, 66a9560. I remember the serial number well, especially since i was calling Cat so often for parts!
Jeff nice to see you’re staying busy!! Sure do enjoy watching you work. Retirement from the Navy is treating me well! I started working for the man again. Well it's good to hear you are busy
@@Jpaydirt yes Sir life is good 👍 so I can’t complain.
Fired off well. Another hit glow plugs, straight out real quickly. Trotting briefly.
Great stuff from "The A Team"
Shop Foreman Mr. Griffy approved
I used to love starting one of rupps In January to warm it up and work on it ,awsome display of I think I can 😂❤

Dam Jay Kenny sounds good !!!!! And kill Dozer sounds tired 👍👍👍 makes you wish you had a pony motor. 💪💪
Jeff i hope this new year is a great one for ya
thanx jeff ! happy new year!
I never saw even one puff of smoke coming out of the stacks on the Kenworth!
"Just try no6 once more there, driver" damn near choked on my peanuts 'n pepsi lol. Happy New Year, man.
That's a sweet old tractor. That phone line looked pretty close. You have some good luck hauling that cat. Every car in the free world would be on the road if I was driving.
If they ain't 16 ft kiss em goodbye LOL
Right on

I think it's a big mistake on cats part

Atta boy Jeff, feed her some of the good stuff! (Cosby sauce) Lol!
Man the ol 9 really ant liking the cold.....she seems a little angry... 😆
Hey Mr Anderson you should try the OPS system on the truck it’s an oil purification system from Pittsburgh power
Well the amount of hours that old girl has on it and the work it's still doing I think if it farts and burps when you wake it up cold like that you're doing good.We can't even spell glow plug here in Aus cheers mate.
I think cold D353 is my new ring tone,
Yikes.., pulling forward and ripping tires off…, that’s gotta kinda cut into the profit margins…
Happy New Year to you and yours, Mr. Paydirt.
17:25 Heartbreaking moment 💔😢 💔 You can hear the D4C screaming "DON'T LEAVE ME...!!!" 😪💔😣😉
Unfortunately I think that d4 is used to being left where finished
Good Stuff
At 28:00 the engine fan looked wild on camera..
Thanks Jeff been running a 6 all week
I allways thought them glow plugs should of had screw terminals ,them littel pins were a bad deal
Great stuff Jeff ‼️
👊🔥
🪖
Those little ramps on the trailer sure have seen the meat.
Gold ol Cheee-naa
thay make and sell in line water heates that burn desal and ele. off the batters of the rig and has a timer thay go in the heater lines
I always roll it back onto preheat once it’ll pop n fart. It cleans up the idle quickly
doesn't do any good with dead plugs or I would have
Diesel crack: it's addictive.
Love the cold start videos.
I think you are going to have to send the D9 to EA - Ether Anonymous 😂😂
Old D9 likes that Ether.
On the glow plug issue. Could you re wire them like the end of spark plug wires?
Hard work for the starter motor.
Hit the glow plugs!!
no sense beating a dead horse
@@Jpaydirt Sorry, I put that in before I read the entire list👍🤠

I wonder how many of these trailers were built.
good video ok.
Where can i buy one of the good glow plugs? I wanna see if i can make them in my shop
That’s the problem… as I look around I don’t see any trees?

Try holding glow plug switch on after starting.
He was.
Build a new loom for the gloplugs..use hitemp ends from reg gas engine plug wires..?
Jeff NEVER LOSES..?
Hmmmm
Jeff, could the glow plug length of time ON be killing those things, I’ve seen some glow plugs timed so you can’t run them long
I would like have at the back of the trailer deck on each side two planks 3”x12”x36” will lift the ripper teeth over the tires.
Novice question: Why are the grouser plates worn unevenly?
Heat the intake with a propane torch.
I think that skeleton has grown some meat on it with a new video you just put out

I don't like the cold ether!
If 6 burnt your finger.....is it that much better, loose connection heating up or shorted?
probably a bad connection
The phone call comes in to the boss .
Driver says Boss to the dozer has broken down and died . Boss replys no worries ill grab some wrenches / spanners .
My uncle Rudy had a d9 h and a komatsu d 355 a dozer he Swore by that komatsu used to say it would out push and out rip a Cat D9H all day long
👍

that's the way it used to be done, they make a folding deal to hold them up but the doesn't work in the rough areas I go
That old girl gets the job done but really needs some TLC.
The old girl needs a woollen engine cover knitting for it…
Bet the kill dozer never touches them ramps! Until it leaves, is it worth it?
gotta protect the outside stubs that allow you to connect the wide neck from the jeep to them
D9H 420 HP after cooled
Hello Jeff. The Ether we use for Starting engines is crap. Bradex is shite. What is your Brand of sniff.
Since you need a new wiring harness you need to call chads fab he can build you one
Is the D8T a high track? The old D8's& 9"s are pretty good iron
yes
It’s not just the old stuff that’s made in China either..
Sounds like injector problems. No expert but if that injector isn’t spraying properly it takes for ever to start
Who do? Stay safe
Looks like the operator needs mechanic skills, electrical skills, plumbing skills, machinist skills.
Grammar skills.
