      This isn't a robust and economical little engine that Ford wants going to the mainstream consumer, it's made cheaply, with a rear mounted belt-drive HPFP and has been ripped out of a Land Rover. In reality, it's just a marketing stunt. You want this engine.

    Really pretty truck and the fuel mileage will improve, I drive a 4X4 2016 Ram 1500 ECO Diesel and I average 22 mpg steady around town here in Central Texas, also have taken three trips to California and averaged 28 mpg and above. If you plan on traveling a Diesel is worth the investment.

    I went from a 15' 5.0L to this new 3.0L Diesel and do not regret it one bit. Fuel economy is far better especially if you have over sized rim/tires like I do. There is virtually no L/100K difference from stock(275/55/20) to 305/60/20. My 5.0L felt the difference, went from 12.5 l/100k over 14. My 3.0 gets 10.5 average with the big boots. Plus when I pull the trailer(5000lbs) every other weekend for racing my wallet doesn't get hit nearly as hard as with the 5.0L. For me more money up front was a no brainer since this thing pays me back over the long run. The only thing I miss from the 5.0L is the rumble, nothing sounds like a V-8 but its a small sacrifice.

    Just bought the 2018 F 150 platinum with the 3.5 ecoboost on friday.
    Went to pick it up and it was around 800 km (500 miles) trip in a nice mix of traffic, from very heavy to almost none.
    Cruise control used when I had the chance at our legal speed limit (60-65mph) and I was plesantly surprised that the average fuel use was lower than I had expected due to the traffic.
    I averaged 12 liters per 100km or 19.6mpg or there about..
    This included an hour or two of very heavy slow going traffic with lots of idle time, highway and city driving. So lots of spirited "road rage" overtaking going on as well hehe.
    I also have the truck on some 35" and not the stock 33" tires.
    Also... holy crap the comfort.. ooooooh the comfort!
    Its like a cozy sofa on wheels!!

    I own a 3.0 you are only talking about driving the truck, and not using it as a truck. I tow a boat and other trailers, I get 24 mpg without a trailer but with I get 20 to 21 mpg while towing. My trailers weigh between 3000lbs to 10000lbs and it pulls like a champ. I also own a 7.3 and a 6.7 super duty. This little 3.0 is worth it weight in gold, but you you are only gone to drive it like a car get the gas, but if you want to tow and get great mpg while doing it this is your truck, hands down.

    My 2021 supercab diesel gets over 31 mpg highway, the diesel engine uses half the rpm of the ⛽ gas motor, might just give it twice the longevity. The diesel has so much torque, with the cruise set to 70 mph on interstate 80 does not shift out of 10th even on steep hills. It's like being able to ride a 10 speed bike in 10th gear uphill 😆 Figure most gas engines would downshift a gear or 2 or 3, creating higher rpm and engine wear

  • @bigballz4u
    @bigballz4u 8 місяців тому

    Fuel economy is the main reason to get a diesel as you say, but there are some other reasons, like they hold their resale value better, and they are probably more reliable, especially for towing applications. A turbo gas engine being pushed to its limit regularly will fare far worse.

    Mike is totally right about this being a numbers game. How long will you keep the vehicle? How many miles will you put on it? What will your towing MPG be? What will it be worth at trade in time? If you were already buying a lariat anyway, the 3k option isn't that big of a deal, and the fuel savings will equalize at 75k miles or so, give or take. I think Ford added this option because they heard GM was adding a diesel to it's new truck lineup. The marketing department couldn't bear to let GM have something they couldn't offer.

    For the way I use my truck, this makes sense. When I do a business trip (two to three times a month) I run 10 hours minimum, all hot, three to five days, average 1600 miles, gotta have 4wd, 8 ft. bed, cruise and air. I could enjoy the legendary diesel reliability ,but this is targeted at soccer moms and grocery getters. Running cold miles like that you just as well put targets on the grille where each bank of cylinders is and draw down on them with your six shooter and see how many cylinders you can lay waste to with each shot. Maybe if injectors were free and you could replace them yourself from the drivers seat it might make sense the way most people use their personal transportation equipment.

  • @n0nuf2
    @n0nuf2 5 років тому

    Unless something's changed, the big reason you keep asking about is that a diesel engine (used) to run WAY longer than a gas engine. I like to keep my trucks for 15+ years. The Ford PowerStrokes have consistently run 250-300K ++ miles. I >rarely< see any gas engines doing that. But, like I said, maybe something has changed.

    Great review, I honestly believe they're not going to sell many of these engines until they offer it in the xl or xlt trim levels and most level headed people wont buy one until Ford has had them out for a while and gotten rid of any major flaws that may arise. 6.0l 6.4l for example. Offering a more fuel efficient engine wont do anybody any good if they cant afford the truck as a whole. Extremely interesting film though.

    Thank you for your honest and educated review. I love the F-150 and am planning on buying one in the coming years as my family grows. The genesis of my logic into potentially buying the diesel option is because I would like to have it for over 15-20 years...and diesels are built for that longevity in terms of mileage. Am I incorrect?

    for people doing many, many miles it‘s an option. i think that‘s why it‘s only available in a fleet for lower trim levels, some companies might choose it. i‘m from germany and here 99% (at least that‘s how i feel about it) of trucks and suvs have diesel engines, the only difference in comparison to the us is that diesel is cheaper than gas. but i‘d always prefer a gas v6 or v8.

    I don't know that it's necessary either. If I got a diesel in a half ton truck it would be in a baseline truck where it wouldn't cost too much and the fuel savings would actually mean something. Like if you had to tow a lot you would eventually feel the cost savings with that diesel. However, since owning the 2.7 EcoBoost, I don't think I would ever own a diesel because its engine is so good.

    I waited for this engine to be released by Ford prior to purchasing an F150 this year and honestly, I chose the EcoBoost 3.5L with the MaxTow package and 36 gallon tank for my needs over the baby PowerStroke. Even with premium fuel, the extra cost associated with DEF, diesel oil changes, additional cost of fuel filters and anti gel additives in the winter make the cost to operate in the long run about the same. Plus, I have less maintenance items on the EcoBoost which means more time polishing and less time wrenching.

    There is a market for the 1/2 ton diesel trucks, not my thing but there seems to be a demand and mainly for fuel mileage. A friend traded his Dodge 3500 for a 1/2 ton Dodge diesel and loves the fuel mileage, he towed his 3,400 lb boat from NC to Florida keys and got good mileage but has said many of times he wish he had kept the 3500 dually. I have a new Dodge Limited 4x4 3500 dually, I like the idea of it being capable of towing most anything comfortably. One thing I saw on another review of the 1/2 ton Ford diesel is the auto shut-off every time you stop. From what I understand, you have to disable that feature when you start the truck like so many other new gas vehicles with that feature. Why not make it an option that is off and you have to enable if you want to use it? Typically on large diesel engines starting and shutting down engine kills the life of the engine, don't know why the small diesel would be any different. My 3500 has option to set cruise and increase RPM at idle in park if you are getting out of the truck for a few minutes. They recommend increasing the idle instead of shutting down and restart within a few minutes.

    • @mrnobody8540
      @mrnobody8540 6 років тому

      Not true - idle kills too!

    If you can get a Chevy Cruz with a diesel engine that's made in Germany that runs like a rocket ship, Ford should have the diesel option with every truck they sell. Who doesn't want diesel ? A lot of guys would buy the diesel in the less expensive packages like the XL and XLT. They should introduce an F-100 truck/ diesel with bare bones other options. They have too many trucks in the F-150 classification. It's total confusion with all the different trim levels and engine options and packages within one class of trucks (F150). Buying a truck is no small task -- this guy here at autovlog certainly helps -- the Lord has given him good understanding.

    If fuel economy and fuel savings are a big priority, the 2.7 ecoboost is basically just as economical as the diesel and $3-4k less depending on trim, also it takes regular gas. I feel like thats the more logical choice. Granted, you cant get it on the king ranch trims or above but the lariat can be equipped just as nice is just cant get massage seats.

    $66K+ for an F-150 with an underpowered diesel (according to the sticker)? Let's be honest, they want significantly more money for an engine that doesn't outperform the best gas motors except in MPG. How many gallons would I have to save before I broke even on cost? At the end of the day, $66K+ will buy a pretty nice new 3/4, or one-ton diesel pickup. Maybe not a Platinum trim, but there's still plenty there for leather and gadgets if you're careful.
    If you need a diesel, might as well just get a proper diesel with all the capability instead of essentially a mileage-maker half-ton that excels at only getting "pretty good" mileage if you add 4x4 and a crew cab. Is it just me, or is 5 mpg a pretty big hit for a crew cab and 4x4? The problem Ford (and Ram) has is that people expect a capability upgrade for the significant added cost of a diesel option. The little 1/2 ton diesels aren't enough of a capability upgrade to justify the cost. The 3/4 & 1 ton diesels cost a ton, but they are a dramatic increase in capability.

    I'm glad ford put a diesel engine in the f150. I was a little disappointed by the power numbers but its a start in my opinion. I wish it had more torque and hp, but thats just me. Also, I wish the powerstroke could be available across all models like the XL. You can get it for fleet in that trim level. It would be pretty sweet in my opinion to have a single cab short bed deleted powerstroke f150

  • @TheDaltonmichaels

    just by looking at graph overlays of the torque curves for the 3.5 ecoboost motor vs 3.0 power stroke torque curve i can tell you the average torque from 1000 rpm to 3000 rpm which is the area everyone drives at the AVG torque coming from the power stroke is probably somewhere between 33% to 50% better. which means a lot more to truck guys than the peak number of the ecoboost which doesn't hit until 4200 rpm. the ecoboost torque curve is pretty flat if you look at the overall curve , but the ramp up to the flat comes on way later than that of the diesel , and the elevation of the flat part is lower than that of the diesel the only place the ecoboost does better is from 4000 rpm and beyond. which no one will be driving at.

  • @Newchiii

    Nice addition to already rich engine lineup in the F150 i guess. The reason why You pick a Turbo Diesel engine, at least here in Europe is the good MPG, especially when you make a lot of mileage yearly and its ability to endure high mileages. It pays off in some cases basically. Also from a guy who owned couple of them, I just love the dynamic characteristics of diesel, that you don't have to beg it to drive, it just moves :) from the very low of the RPM scale. Here where I live diesel fuel is even cheaper than regular gasoline so the engine choice between diesel and gasoline is still relevant. Nice video Mike ! All the best to You

    Here in South Africa the Ford Ranger is only offered in diesel, there’s no petrol options whatsoever, it’s highly frustrating.
    The options are basically a 3.2 5-Cylinder turbo diesel, a 2.2 4-pot turbo diesel and even the new Raptor gets a friken 2.0 4-pot bi-turbo diesel. Dammit Ford!!!
    I want to have many words with whoever is in charge of deciding what engines to offer here in SA.
    I want at least one petrol option, heck I’d even settle for the 2.3 ecoboost from the Focus RS or Mustang.
    But that new Ranger Raptor should at least have the 2.7 ecoboost.
    I know it’s what the South African market wants, most people here buy diesel but they should at least have a petrol option for those of us like me who don’t want a friken diesel!

    • @MIGerlag
      @MIGerlag 6 років тому +2

      Dassd Schsdu Well then maybe when the Ranger finally lands in the US where you get decent petrol options you can ship me a nice ecoboost extra-cab and I’ll ship you back your 2.2 diesel single cab. Lol, The steering wheel will be on the other side, besides the fact it would cost an arm and a leg to ship if even possible with new vehicles.
      I just wish car manufacturers would offer the same stuff to everyone everywhere, this is the problem when you have the bean counters who think they know what’s best for the market determine who gets what, just give everyone everything. I know it doesn’t make financial sense but man! what a nice world it would be.

    One thing that have always bothered me with the upgraded F150, Lariat, King Ranch and above and diesel in general, first is the console shifter. It was great when it first came out ten or so years ago, but really, with electronic shifting available in all Ford transmissions, do you really need a huge shifter that takes up room? No. Secondly, Everyone forgets the additional cost of DEF when averaging overall operational costs. When the original F250 first came out that had EPA mandated DEF, the gas tank in the short bed only held 20 gallons because of the space required to place a DEF reservoir. In order to get a larger tank, you had to have the 8 foot bed which was huge when considering that most trucks sold in that market is a Crew Cab configuration. The DEF also was a problem with people who did not drive the diesel on the highway, ROUTINELY, to be able to burn off the carbon in the muffler. I would assume that the 3.0 will have the same issues as the big daddy diesel in the 250’s and above.
    The 2.7 Ecoboost is perhaps Ford’s best engine for the F150, PROVIDING, you don’t routinely tow heavy loads. It will get 21 to 23+ on the highway if you don’t drive with a heavy foot and use cruise control once you get to highway speed. Coupling the 2.7 and the 27 gallon gas tank, you can expect 450 to 520 miles per tank almost routinely particularly if you drive primarily highway driving. I believe the Ford’s lineup of available powerplants can be limited to the 2.7, 3.5, 3.5 super and that’s it. The diesel provides limited importance unless you put it in the entry level trucks, starting with the XL, where guys who actually use their trucks for work would derive a powerful benefit for towing and carrying heavy box loads.
    Europe has been using a Ford diesel in their Ford cars for sometime, why isn’t a diesel more available in the USA for that application?

  • @nocheteipsum
    @nocheteipsum 6 років тому

    Mike, you could have addressed the longevity of Diesel versus Gasoline engines. It's an important consideration depending upon how the truck is going to be utilized. You DO know that diesel engines typically last two to three times longer than gasoline, right?

  • @michaelcheser
    @michaelcheser 5 років тому

    By the time you break it down you're saving about $12 a tank on gas if you drive reasonably and on the highway. Now $12 a tank sounds nice for most that could be an extra $30-40 saved a month, but you have to consider the DEF fluid you have to use ( I assume this truck needs DEF) and that oil changes are much more expensive in a diesel (usually double the cost). Then you also have to think about maintenance, fewer people work on diesels, they're more expensive in labor and parts, and simple things like diesels use two batteries, not just one. There's a lot more cost in the diesels and for the gains it gives they're not enough to make it better than a 3.5L in my opinion.

      Al Singleton Modded for more capability. No that's not how it works, Tune alone doesn't give you more power, sure they sell for more when they are older, but That's because it's a diesel, they don't make good diesels anymore, Just because you can blow black smoke out of your truck doesn't mean it's powerful. I used to have a JD Lawn mower that could do that. Was that powerful? No, Stock tune is perfect, and you don't see the older diesels with high miles have tunes do ya. Only the new ones that you see blown up and have issues.

I’m an adult who doesn’t “roll coal” and have owned my truck since new. Gas trucks have a much lower resale value (true again) and are generally sold off or traded in at 100,000-125,000 miles. just saw this since i'm in the market for a used 3.0 power-stroke. I can say that everything you said is true when referring to the numbers and if the 3.0 is even necessary however for me and i assume others that look for a diesel option in a truck is of-course for the immediate savings in fuel cost but also for longevity. Diesel engines once taken care of, will give you on average 3 to 400 mile usages compared to a gasoline engine which is on average 150 to 200 mile. I'm not saying that there aren't any gas engines with high mileage on the road, I'm just saying that the diesel engines seem to be more durable. I'm not an engineer so i can't say for sure why that is so but my guess is that it is the difference in the way the two combust. The diesel engines today are so much more quiet and efficient than those of yesteryear that there just isn't any comparison between a ford 3.0 deisel of today and lets say the mercedes OM617 diesel of the early 80's. Gasoline engines are efficient also but still lack that longevity. I would like you to include longevity and ownership period comparisons in your reviews and then we may see quite a difference in diesel engines. Just thought i'd add this little piece- As a boy growing up in the Caribbean i was exposed to diesel engines by way of the European market. The purchase model there at the time was quite different to the North American market. When we bought a vehicle it was for life. So most people, who didn't mind the smell and noise bought a diesel vehicle and had it for an average of 15 to 20 years depending on usage.
    I really enjoyed your review and i think you have what many youtubers lack, simplicity.
