This is literally one of the ALL-TIME great albums... I went decades with this album flying below my radar... I just heard this for the first time a couple of years ago. It belongs on the same shelf with the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" and the Beatles "Revolver" or "Sgt. Peppers." The band broke up before the song "Time of the Season" became a massive hit. Interesting tidbit:
They misspelled "Odyssey" in the title "Odessey and Oracle."
... a beautiful album from beginning to end. So glad you're giving it a shot, JP!
Also: LOVE that Laurie Anderson album!! "O Superman" and "From The Air" are incredible and so different than ANYTHING else that was happening at that time. (She's worked with Peter Gabriel on a couple of songs, as well. Check out "This is the Picture")

Keyboardist Rod Argent had a huge solo hit with, "Hold Your Head Up" (1972)
Colin Brunstone, the vocalist, did several really good songs with The Alan Parsons Project in the 70's. Too many vocalists did the same so I'd have to look up which ones, if I had to name any... ;-)
Personally, on first listen, I wouldn't even have recognized the band... I don't know this band as well as I should, but this is not the sound that I hear in my head when the band is mentioned. This was a bit pop-ier than I would expect... Maybe I just noticed their slightly darker songs, I dunno... Try, "Time of the Season", "She's Not There", and "Tell Her No"... These are the songs that put them on the map, for me anyway. Cheers!

Zombies - great band. Well respected.
Colin Blunstone had very distinctive vocals, later went solo.
Rod Argent keyboards, later formed his own band - Argent. Listen to the longer album version of Hold your head up, if you ever need a lift.
I've not heard this track before. On the radio they normally play other hits - Time of the season, She's not there.
    A much loved band.

Hey JP, I finally Subscribed. (oops)
I previously recommended an Argent song.
The Zombies are more recognized and appreciated by other musicians than the general public. Countless Musicians who have achieved success have cited The Zombies and the Odessey and Oracle Album their inspiration to become Musicians.
This is the reason they were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
Rod Argent has been credited by the Music World for being the first keyboard player to establish a place for keyboards in Rock Music, and his keyboard solo in Argent's song Hold Your Head Up, Woman, was considered to be the best keyboard solo ever, by nonother than the Legendary Original Keyboardist Rick Wakeman of YES. High Praise indeed.
The Zombies is a long story that is both sad and inspirational, starting in 1961, being the second band from the UK to tour the USA after The Beatles, (George Harrison of The Beatles loved The Zombies) during the "British Invasion".
The Zombies were horribly mismanaged and ripped off by their manager.
By 1967 they were beginning to burn out and going broke they financed their 2nd Album Odessey and Oracle and produced it themselves in Abbey Road Studios, (the studio owned by The Beatles).
Without money or a record company to promote the Album, by the time Odessey and Oracle was released the Band had already broken up and the song "Time of the Season" became a World Wide Hit.
The were even imposter bands touring as The Zombies, one of them would become ZZ Top.
From 1967 over the next 30 years interest in The Zombies grew by purely word of mouth and Odessey and Oracle kept selling more and more copies.
Rod Argent & Colin Blunstone (lead singer) formed a duo in the late 1990's and were pleasantly shocked by how much interest there was in The Zombies music, they reconstituted The Zombies and have recorded New Music most recently in 2015.
The Zombies have about 200 songs available now that most people aren't aware of. Many from the 1960's that were never released.
They are more popular now than ever, and in 2015 they were recognized by Billboard Magazine to be the the first band in their history to have an Album in the Top 100 Billboard Charts; 50 Years Apart.
My wife and I flew to Vancouver to see them live in 2017. They played for 2 1/2 hours which included the full Odessey and Oracle Album.
To see them Live is to see Masters of Their Craft.
    Peace ✌️ Out

Not only Zombies but Ms. Anderson. Cool. Double cool.
I kept hearing about this album and tried to listen not long ago. I just wasn’t ready for some reason. Now I’m digging it. I was reading in Tape Op magazine about the recording of a this record and as others have mentioned it was in EMI , the Beatles studio space. Same piano and Mellotron, nice... some tidbit, the band was walking down the hall to the studio and passed George Harrison working on a solo or song progression and after the Zombies finished up for their session hours later, again, passed George still there working on probably, the same solo. And as others have mentioned the vocals are more reminiscent of The Beach Boys.
Mr. Heartbreak is my favorite Laurie Anderson album which features Adrian Belew of Zappa, Talking Heads, Bowie, and King Crimson fame. His solo albums are great too. The song Pretty Pink Rose with David Bowie is really good, also, Gunman:

There was a melotron. Apparently this was recorded at Abby Roads, and they used one that had been left behind by the Beatles, just using it without asking. They actually had a small budget for the record, and couldn't afford to have any session musicians or even stereo. They had to pay some of their own money for a stereo mix. All things considered, makes it even more impressive.

A great song from one of the great albums of all time. When the Zombies got to the studio the Beatles had left their mellotron, the Zombies requested to use it and Lennon granted it and one of the best early used if the instrument. If you get to hear these guys live Colin still sounds like that they are terrific! Fabulous choice and if you do an album listen you will be richly rewarded. The best of the, 60's!

Really nice you started with this track - I know you’ll get to one of my absolute favorite tracks of all time , Time of the Season , as well as another single from the album , Butchers Tale
A later track of theirs , She’s Not There , is also a favorite of mine. Santana later did an absolutely scorching cover of it as well
As for this track - the harmonies are definitely more of a Beach Boys pastiche than they are the Beatles
A year before this track there was a pretty ‘ groovy’ one hit wonder : 98.6 by Keith Though I’ve never seen it discussed in relation to this track , I really believe 98.6 influenced this song. Check it out and decide for yourself

Everyone I've ever played this album for has fallen in love with--including my teen stepdaughter that I played it for about 10 years ago, so much so that when they did a tour of this in which they were playing the whole album came around and I asked if she wanted to go, her reply was "Are you kidding me? It (the album ‘Odessey and Oracle’) was recorded in Abbey Road and Olympic Studios. Two of the best London studios of that time. I think the Mellotron was the same one The Beatles used. This song was recorded at Abbey Road. They were on a tight budget so the material was heavily rehearsed in order to reduce expensive studio time.

"Time of the Season" of course and "She's Not There" are a part of the soundtrack of my preteen life. And then, of course, flash-forward a half-decade to Argent's "Hold Your Head Up" with that solid bass and drum - and try to keep your head still . . .

But I have to say that period between 2 track and 16 track was pretty darn cool; and I love listening to the sound of those recordings. Brilliant lp though this track is atypical. Try Colin Blunstone’s solo stuff too 👍 The mellotron was the one used by the Beatles. The Zombies lp was recorded in the same studio as Sgt Pepper just after the Fabs moved out. Btw some of the songs on the lp are darker and more melancholic 👍

You have to experience the entire album. Great track but this is kind of like Sgt. Pepper in that the individual tracks make more sense in the context of the whole. ‘On The Threshold Of A Dream’ by The Moody Blues is like that as well.

Much like Rap and Hip-Hop style of music rules today's music....The Beatles and Motown sound and style ruled the early 60's, so you are going here a lot of rock groups and soul bands in the 60's having one or two songs that sound like either the Beatles or Motown. So, yeah you are right on in your reaction. But each group had a distinct sound when they released their hits. The Harpsichord was a sound used in the sound of the 60's which makes the 60's distinct. Used a lot in The Beatles sound.

Laurie Anderson and Kate Bush are just people that are from another world....not a bad things but approach to their audiences are like Angels that are aware of the sufferings and fragilities of humans and they are here on this planet...like the Prog group "YES" to take you on a journey of healing and exploration of your-self. Just Excellent Deep Artist!!! Way to go!!! I encourage you to keep exploring them. I still recommend Kate Bush's "Moments of Pleasure," which is the best work since "A woman's Work."

Yeah the Zombies are pretty underrated. There's a good chance you've heard a couple of their hits, so it's not like they're totally obscure, but I would think they'd be remembered more alongside the Beatles and Beach Boys. That should become a regular phrase now, "third bowl of porridge." If you're liking it, go for the whole album!

The song could be interpreted as a uplifting piece about second chances - but I always had a darker take on it. Although it's sung by a man, I always imagined it was from the point of view of a naive woman who was inviting a dangerous man back into her life. (If you read what band members have said about it - it's not my interpretation. But that's what I always thought.)
