The thing about Riz's decision at the start of the episode is that, when it comes to characters, it's less important for their actions to make sense than it is for them to be motivated. Humans aren't perfectly rational beings and Riz has been going through the entire season. If a justification is needed for her to go back for the body, well she just saw three of her friends die in quick succession and the charge back into the fray comes off as a last stand as much as it does an attempt to secure Vannak's body. Not only that, but it ends up being a very important thing to have done; perhaps the most significant thing in the entire episode. Her irrational but highly driven act ends up making Chief a better person as he his confrontation with Vannak during the burial scene clearly has an effect on him. Call it a bad decision in hindsight, but you can't deny the impact that it had on everyone in this episode which I feel did a great job of exploring the grief that everyone is going through.
