- How Did Empress Victoria Die?!
In her final years, Empress Frederick dedicated much of her time to painting and frequenting the artist colony in Kronberg, where she regularly met with painter Norbert Schrödl. During the last months of her life, she enjoyed morning walks and spent long hours either writing letters or reading in her castle’s library.
In late 1898, doctors diagnosed her with incurable breast cancer, forcing her to remain in bed for extended periods. By the fall of 1900, the cancer had spread to her spine. Fearing that her personal letters-where she expressed her concerns about Germany’s future under her son-might fall into the hands of the emperor, she arranged for them to be secretly retrieved and returned to Britain. This task was carried out by her godson, Frederick Ponsonby, who was also the private secretary to her brother, Edward VII. He was visiting her in Kronberg on February 23, 1901, during her final days. The letters were later edited by Ponsonby and published in 1928, accompanied by his commentary.
Empress Frederick passed away at Friedrichshof on August 5, 1901, just under seven months after her mother’s death.
She was interred beside her husband in the royal mausoleum at the Friedenskirche in Potsdam on August 13, 1901. A marble effigy of the empress lies atop her tomb, and her two sons, Sigismund and Waldemar, who died in childhood, are also buried in the same mausoleum.
