This is the best "Final Scene" of Sweeney Todd I've heard! I just love the way that Ball's voice is dripping with venom. He truly makes Todd sound like he's restraining himself from lunging at Lovett, and then brutally strangling her to death.
Agreed. George Hearn will always be "the" Sweeney to me but this "Final Scene" blows all others out of the water. I find Mrs. Lovett here even more compelling than Sweeney. Have yet to see anyone else even try her approach to this scene.
He throws her into the oven here too, and every version. I think that final slam sound is him shutting the doors. It does seem like he looks at her for a bit, though.
It's amazing how Imelda picks up steam with every line starting with "No, no, not lied at all" until the stunning lines already pointed out below. I really liked Angela Lansbury's Mrs. Lovett but the performance in this song is on a totally different level to me.
There's something more...real? about it. Not just reading words on a page. Most sing that part soft and gentle but with her there's an almost guttural force of emotion behind her words. It's almost like she's angry. Desperate and angry. "How dare you not recognize my love for you!"
I think it's very interesting how different other interpretations of the characters are in each production. The 2012 revival makes Todd look more insane and psychotic while the Tim Burton Todd is a lot more calm, collected, charismatic and charming. He's still very passionate about getting his revenge and has some outbursts, but it's nothing compared to how emotional Michael's performance is. The film seems more stylised and romantic, but this performance focuses a lot more on the insanity and cruel ways of the characters. They are very different, but I love them both.
I love this part of the show. Sondheim recycles and repurposes elements from four different songs ("Poor Thing", "A Little Priest", "By the Sea", and "The Barber and His Wife") in a relatively short sequence and it all hangs together beautifully. That is genius at work.

Plus Michael Ball’s performance feels a lot less...overwrought? When it comes to Sweeney seeing Lucy’s face. I know it’s supposed to be melodramatic, but other Sweeneys like to yell all his lines. Ball is a lot more seething and venomous.
