  • To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Japanese bombing of Darwin on February 19 1942 the National Film and Sound Archive presents some rare amateur footage shot in Darwin both pre and post bombing. Victor Tarhanoff was an early 16mm film enthusiast who has captured some wonderful colour material of not only Darwin but also other Northern Terriitory locations and around Australia. The NFSA now holds a collection of four of Tarhanoff's Darwin films. Three of which are presented here in an edited form. The NFSA's Michael Karris has edited this compilation and added audio (music and sound effects) sourced from the NFSA collections. If you know anything about these films or Victor Tarhanoff or historical facts about scenes in this film we would love to know about it.

In Febuary 2012, The National Film and Sound Archive hosted a special screening of films including rare and unique Darwin footage, to mark the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin. A large local and interstate audience enjoyed the first public screening in decades of Victor Tarhanoff's films from the NFSA's Film Australia Collection. Tarhanoff 's films are the earliest known colour footage of Darwin, showing life before after the bombing raids in World War 2. Victor Tarhanoff's descendents travelled from south-east Queensland to be there. Members of the Indigenous community, Chinese commmunity and the Anzac Centenary Advisory Board also attended.

Thanks for the upload. Victor Tarhanoff was my great uncle and I believe his nephew Barry Dwyer rescued these films. He had a projector in his house and as little children thought his movies were awesome.

What a fantastic bit of film. Many of those shots I don't recognise and I would like to hear a narrative of where these places were. Priceless footage indeed.
