Oh Lord, where have we gone?
Yes, the times they are a-changin', but its a bad change into a dark cold world,
where no one embraces the other any more,
where everyone keeps a social distance,
where no one laughs any more because they might emit too much aerosol.
Are these the times we are drifting towards?

Does the original now sound different? If not it's not ruined.

As to the “which is better” debate, I guess we’ll just let the 2 versions exist independently... and really, my affinity for Phil’s version is all about the instrumental arrangement, and in that regard, the two versions might as well be completely different songs. He could be singing the yellow page as far as I’m concerned, the lyrics just aren’t what triggers my response, and for that matter, the melody line itself isn’t that big of a factor, either. It’s more about chord progressions, the bass line, which the original version doesn’t even have, I don’t think... if it does, it is unremarkable. .. anyway, chords, bass line, key change, dependence on rhythm guitar part along with somewhat minimalist drum track, and whoever had the guts to try a BAGPIPE (of all things) - interlude, probably got some funny looks, but in the end, in my mind it was sheer genius. Another instance of this phenomenon is the original, redneck, hippety-hoppity, hee-haw version of Eric Clapton’s “After Midnight”. So beneath him. I hated it ... it made me change the radio station or just turn it off. Then one day I hear these three super airy, breathy pipe organ notes... or maybe 2-note chords - whatever ... instantly gets my attention so I turn it up ... within seconds, I’m playing air-guitar and attempting to vocalize a bass part. I can tell right away it’s Clapton, but I don’t know how long it was before I realized that this is a total overhaul of that stupid song of his that I hate, and wow, I am LOVIN IT. I think it is referred to as the “slow hand” or “1989” version, and was recorded live. Here’s a link if you want to hear it:
