I hate wasting perfectly good technology, even if it's old and outdated. So being the diligent tinker nut that I am, when I found this old receipt printer, I had to find some useful way to re-purpose it. And what better way to repurpose old tech than stuffing it with a Raspberry Pi? I'm sure eventually everything (including people) will be stuffed with Raspberry Pi's. I'll be the first in line ;-) Anyway, using the online service "If This Then That" (www.ifttt.com), I was able to connect the Pi and printer to a ton of online services, including Amazon Alexa. Long story long, I turned the old receipt printer into an Alexa printer. Guess I could've just said that at the beginning. Oh well.

That's really creative! Looking forward to the tutorial.
Very cool. In the IFTTT recipe, can you add a couple line breaks after the formula so that you don't have to push the manual feed button on the printer?
Depends on the type of receipt printer and how it interprets the commands. For some reason this cheap one wouldn't interpret line breaks by themselves. There is also a "feed" and "cut" command in the ESC-POS library, which will work on more expensive printers (I have tried it), but not on this one. If you want more functionality, you can go with an Epson branded receipt printer, but expect it to be $100 more
some of the commands in these old printers are simple bytes like 0xc3 or something like that. so, you could send directly the byte that says to the machine to cut or break a line
Tinkernut Or use the one that Adafruit has. ;-)
Line breaks are one way.. Also Just adding some *'s or -'s would work :D
Such a neat idea!
This is what I love about your channel, thinking outside the box. Mixing old and new tech. Can't wait for the diy video. This could be really useful for my mom.
looking forward to see the build next weekend
Very useful project I'm digging the new style but I'm missing the narration you used to do
oh well
I do that in the build videos.
Absolutely love these raspberry PI projects. Keep em comin!
Wow, that's super useful and cool. Would be nice for printing out recipies and stuff.
Congrats on the half a million subs.
Long time lurker and unsure if this is how this works but could you make a short story printer using that receipt printer?
Bread is a conspiracy made by the made company to sell more bread!
I can imagine someone without a screen using this to go on twitter, printing each tweet sequentially.
it opened my alexa shopping list
This so cool, i'm excited if you do make the video on how you've done this.
Congrats on 500K! Also great video! :)
.
I'm looking forward to the build video. But this feels more like a BuzzFeed video, and not like a Tinkernut video.
Great idea and great video!
This is really cool
Nice idea
can you use an arduino instead of Raspberry Pi?
i would love to do this project
Very clever
Great video!!
Do you have the brand and model of the printer?
Can I do that with an rj45 only Receipt Printer ?
You should make Alexa print the feedback.
Can you do an updated vbs encryption video? I just tried to program it on windows 10 and its not working.
Can you show how to do this for google home
the quality of your videos get better.
This is dope
Too bad Alexa stopped supporting the IFTTT.
Bad news for trees lol
hey, i love these kinds of videos and I have a slide phone but I and my friends were trying to think of a way to put like an android operating system on it just as a joke is that even possible or how would that happen? thanks for the replies
You can't. The specs are likely too low, and the things don't have any third party shit anyways. You can actually buy an Android flip phone though.
what was the song used in the background?
Can it be made to work with Google assistant?
Yes, it can work with any service that IFTTT is connected to, and Google Assistant is one of them
whats the difference between a Raspberry Pi Zero Wireless and a normal pi apart from size
Performance, if I remember correctly the Zero W has 512mb of ram while the Pi3 has a full gig. The processing speeds might be different but other than the size and performance changes they are quite similar.
The biggest difference for this kind of projects is the price. Thr Pi Zero is much cheaper and better suited for this kind of projects where you don't need a lot of processing power
Lower performance, but lower price and energy usage. It's better for small embedded stuff.
what are you running on the raspberry pi ?
Raspbian.
YES I CAN PRINT MY TWEETS
Cool
love your vids
Interesting
Hacking is awesome
am i the only one having a hard time opening the printer case...
imagine having every tweet printed lol
Ifttt* ;)
