@@TheUnderscore_ it's just a theory, because the word megalovania describes chara a lot better than sans, plus there is no sans leitmotif within it, which as we all know is something Toby's a little obsessed with so it seems strange. This all points towards it not being a sans's theme at all, but rather Chara's/the player's.
Gonna be real, the backing was basically MADE for guitar. The Earthbound guitar samples make it just sound like a metal cover, which is fucking amazing.
Also those orchestral hits are so fucking good
The Earthbound samples are only in certain parts. The guitar you're hearing is an actual guitar, albeit made into a soundfont. That's also why it sounds so fitting to you, the song was originally composed with electric guitar used

Probably because that's the Earthbound guitar, and that part is practically MADE for a guitar. So what ends up happening is that it sounds like a retro guitar is being played there, which sounds fucking amazing.

well if it helps identifying why at all, I was just watching a video about the sonic games and parts of this reminded me of Shadow? Like, certain aspects of this would fit him well. Also, plenty of songs and soundtracks have a simple lead with the complexity being in the backings and tbh I think that can make for a great game soundtrack.
