Mevagissey goes to War

The wartime movie "The Next of Kin" was filmed in and around Mevagissey, St Austell, Pentewan & Charlestown on the south Cornish coast in 1941. This video looks at the locations used, identifying them in the film and showing what they look like today.
Originally intended as a military training film, The Next of Kin told the tale of a Commando raid against a Nazi held harbour on the French coast unaware that their plans had been compromised by careless talk and the work of Nazi spies. The film made by the famous Ealing Studios then received a cinema release in 1942. Churchill sought to have the film banned, and it was withdrawn from cinemas in the run-up to the St Nazaire Raid in March 1942.

Excellent video, well done! Next time am in Cornwall will go into The White Hart hotel in St Austell and see if the round window is still there where Major Richards had a peek into the bar area to seek out No 23 , Mr Davis. The Fish & Chips looks tempting too, currently only £6.95 on Friday's (2021)

My father, Frederick Day, of the 8th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment helped transform a section of General Carriers (a.k.a Bren Gun Carriers) into the German Panzer Tanks send briefly advancing across a field towards'British lines' at the end of "Next of Kin". We watched the film together a few years ago and he recognised a number of his former comrades playing troops on both sides of the conflict!
