The outcome of the 2019 election really was the turning point for me when I thought we are doomed. The housing crisis is basically killing our economy, with the interest rates super charging its death.
Here in WA there appears to be the view the state government is too close with certain developers & builders both in the commercial & private sectors. Basic enforcement of building regulations is adhoc at best & non existent in other cases. If one cannot afford to buy no amount of government incentives change this. Someday this unsustainable situation will change.
John Howard has a lot to answer for, not just the negative gearing and 50% discount on capital gains tax. If they won’t change the tax rules. A quick fix to help the housing situation would be to fix the Airbnb problem. Stop foreign investment in housing. Put a cap on investment properties folks can claim against. Rent caps - they say they can’t do this but we used to have caps until Howard removed them, along with stripping all renters rights.
while supply is part of it, it's not the biggest problem, not by a long way. that belongs to government regulation & corruption. - Put much higher taxes on second home transactions, - don't allow negative gearing on second homes. - have much higher taxes & regulation on short term rentals. as stated above, a home should be just that, not a investment mechanism for the privileged.
Was feeling the same. I hate podcasts, I only clicked on this because it had Alan who I respect talking about the housing crisis. Come on Australian institute film it, ffs

I don't think the difficulty is people's housing values increasing. My parents learned that even if their house value went up it cost just as much extra to purchase. People want their children to own a house. The difficulty is the political / landlord class ruling in their own interests.
Someone saves for years and goes into debt for decades to buy a house somewhere they like. They don't want what they bought changed by local bureaucrats and developers. Who could understand that? I know we'll indulge in name calling, 'nimby', that'll help (not).
Only way out of the housing crisis for young Australians not privileged with property rich parents is to leave this third world country. Everyone else is on the Ponzi like Matt Barrie rightfully said.

Meanwhile while everyone keeps just talking about it house prices rise, population keeps growing and more people are homeless.
Totally agree with Alan.Housing should be a basic human right. And with the presenter to convert golf course to affordable Housing.A great podcast.❤
Its very depressing, we work full time but a roof is not guaranteed.
It doesn't matter how many times I listen to how we fix things.
Truth is, our Government simply doesn't want to.
End of conversation.

Like they mention opening up more land as a solution.. why not open up the land and then make it easy for people with tiny homes on wheels to move in?
The only prime minister i hate is john howard
Agree with so much of it but leave the parks alone.

Evidence for corruption in housing affordability?
@@smc9291you have got to be joking. This like someone says I want to see the smoking gun, when a bomb has just gone off

GST & Stamp duties are mostly the problem with housing. Fix Government = Fix Housing.
Fantastic views. Thank you for sharing
Cash rate should be 10% at least. Too much debt needs a cleanse.

No one ever complains that their house has gained value

Watch Flat Out Like a Nation Sinking by Matt Barrie
Koehler wrongly blames capital gains “adjusted “ for inflation. Taxing inflation will make housing availability and costs much worse.
