That was a kinda clickbait. You didn't really talk about food alternatives. You just talked about duckweed and how looking for alternatives is bad for a beginner. That wasn't the topic or what caption suggested

Wondered if you had ever thought of using black soldier flies for chicken food? Might be a good use of all the spent hops from your brewery.....

Great and noble goal is sciencing the nutritional needs, use and access to raw materials at your homestead and successfully feeding fast growing meat birds. One never knows if money or supplies will always be there. ❤️🌱🐓

Do you feed your chickens or other animals the spent grains from your brewery?

Not related to duckweed, but my broilers are enjoying my invasive Japanese stiltweed that just sprouted..

I’m a big proponent of soaking feed and allowing it to ferment.. I find animals eat less, waste less feed, and drink less water.. Think about a human eating dry cereal/pasta all day.. ur gonna drink a lot.. This would require a bit more labor, but an easy addition to the chicken tractor, to add a bucket of soaked feed with a lid.. I think the economics definitely pays off.. Might be a good experiment..

    Azolla is better anyway.
    No need to do research.
There have been plenty of videos on each.

I want to raise some chickens for meat but I need a cage. I don't have a lot of space and I only take 3 chickens what's your advice?

Are you keeping them outside? On grass?
Look up "chicken tractor". Very easy to make a small one.

@@sjoerd3024 That's fine. Just make a small chicken tractor. Move it when they eat the grass down. It will grow back fast.
If your yard is too small, can you move them to your neighbors yard?

You could also try to find someone that has clean grass and offer to cut it for them bringing the clipping back to your yard for your chickens. I cut my grass and give it to my 9 hens and the love the weekly dump of greens. It also controls how much damage is done to my lawn by bringing the lawn to them in their run as opposed to letting then "free range" on my lawn and dig too much up.

Here is a video I put out when I finished the build of my chicken tractor/greenhouse it is 5'x8' and just under 6' tall, it's easy to move and I added wheels to the back end to make it easier to move. I'd say you could keep 6 chickens in it for the time frame it takes to raise meat birds. ua-cam.com/video/h75TVMirP3g/v-deo.html

Broilers were made to eat prepared feed. Backyard chickens have ate and will continue eating bugs (protein) and grass/seeds (carbs) and other sources of vitamins.
If you're into factory farming with broilers stick to prepared feed.
If you're a back yard farmer growing backyard poultry duckweed, black soilder fly larvae, sprouted grains and free ranging is the way to go.

If someone can not afford proper chicken feed...
DON'T BUY CHICKENS AND TRY TO FEED THEM SECOND (or 3rd, 4th, 5th... )
    BEST CRAP FOOD
Chickens NEED to eat CHICKEN FEED!!!
JUST SAY NOT TO BEING A HILLBILLY!!!

Brian Curwick broilers need prepared feed. Backyard chickens however were eating bugs and fresh greens millineums before the likes of cobbs appeared.
It would be foolish for a broiler farm to use duckweed and other feed alternatives because broilers would eat as much as they would have ate prepared feed, and they still would not reach market.
If you have backyard chickena however you'd be better off with free ranging your flock and supplementing feed with duckweed (protein), black solider fly larvae (protein), rice and corn bran (carbs for energy).
