You're a lifesaver mate, been having insomnia for a few weeks now because of my room being piping hot and now I've never been so happy to have a cool room again
Thank you so much genius! Our bills are ridiculously high last three months as we weren’t able to stop a burning to the max radiator in a room we use for storage. Today, after watching your video with the best clear instructions we finally managed to stop it. God bless you mate!
you are a hero man, i moved into a new house and stupidly the old owners built not easily movable furniture over the dial to change it and i've been struggling with the heat from the radiator as it was stuck at full. this video helped me so much
Thank you so much, you saved a life! I just moved to a new place and the bathroom towel radiator was stuck on maximum heat, which resulted in a hefty energy bill already. It also burnt me once. Landlord had no idea about its workings. I thought I would have to live with the heating off in the whole flat. I'm very grateful that you share useful knowledge!
Thank you Dereton33. I live in a share house where one of occupants needs the heater on all the time. We spoke yesterday how the landlord had increased the rent citing the huge energy bill and the occupant was complaining how expensive everything was. Anyway the house is piping hot as all the radiators were on. A few nights ago I had a miserable time of it, but today I found your video and I can rest easy. Thanks once again. You're a life saver.
Thank you!!!! I live in a room where the old man in the house has it up on 30 degrees Celsius 24/7 (and still complains he's cold...). This was like learning from my grandad or something. What an absolute legend!
this video just saved my life. my Thermostatic radiator head just broke with the heating on. For 3 days I was frustrated because is too hot the sleep,. and today I finally managed to find this video I'm just so happy about this. thank you very much.
You are an absolute genius mate 🙏 thank you so so much for this. I’ve literally had a piping hot bedroom for about 3 years now and I didn’t even know I could turn it off at the other end 😂🙈🙈 you have made my day. Thank you so much ❤️
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge ❤️ The heater from my son's bedroom broke the thermostat and you just saved a sleepless night. Bless you 😇🙏
How long have I waited to do this? How much money have I wasted having a full blast radiator in a room we rarely use? Too long! I tried years ago to fiddle with the TRVs on ours but it didn't work and put it out of my mind meaning to get a plumber in eventually when I had the money. Bedroom is now warming up for the first time in years and the front room is now NOT a furnace! So a massive thank you!
You guys are a saviour. Thanks so much for this. My radiator at both top and lower floor of my flat was pumping hot air despite by HIU being switched off, in addition to my TRVs being broken. It was getting extremely difficult to stay inside, in addition to burning money on using all the excess heat units. Cant thank you both much for this. One follow up question, how do I know which new TRV to fit in my radiators in terms of sizing and how do I do it? Do you have any video on how to fit new TRV after older ones being broken?
you are a godsend! daughters top floor room is like an oven, and with the unpredictable weather right now, it's even a sauna or freezing cold... thank you! (and thank you Jan, great questions re: direction) keep up the content!
Thank you. Just put my real tree up and turned rad next to it off but it was still blasting. Tried both ways on the thermo as their was a dispute between me n him as to I had turned it wrong way and only one of us can crawl under the tree. We have now given the other end a twist and hope that solves it. Thanks for the video. In new year will check out your how to replace one. Thanks again. Wish us luck!
We broke our radiator handle so it's been stuck on full heat and I was scared to twist things with a spanner and see what works haha. Thank you for the explanation! 😊
Many thanks for this. I tried with pliers but no luck as could not get any grip and mistakenly thought that it could not be turned any further, then I tried the wrench and it worked a treat. About six turns in all.
Thank you so much!!! Was so stressed about this, as can’t invite anyone round now to fix anything because of current lockdown restrictions! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I've disconnect 2 radiators to clean sludge from them. (Both had lock shield valves either side) had no issues. On doing the 3rd radiator which has a lock shield valve and TRV on the other side, a massive amount of flowing water gushed from the radiator and I think from the valve side as well. Have I just simply not closed off the valves correctly or is there some supply in valve I have missed.
So sorry if this has been asked before - I have an older turn valve radiator, not a thermostatic. The turn valve is on the right end, the lockshield valve is on the left end. The turn valve is completely stuck. Will turning off the lockshield valve work on these kinds of radiators?
I was wondering what is the valve plug called that you use when you stop the TRV from leaking. I can't find it in stores. It's the plug that you replace the trv with so it doesn't leak
Great to know one way to sort ! I like the camera operator! She asks questions that we need to know!❤️ I have a little problem 😉....... why does my soft close seat and cover , now not soft close? You have to push it down by hand else it’ll sit there all night for when the missus wants to use the loo! I’ve tried WD 40 but no dig! Any ideas please? Great videos! Glad to see the face free of bandages! 👍🇬🇧
Hi David, yes Jan always ask the questions I forget need to be asked, any way there is no way to fix your seat WD 40, will not help I know I tried it. New seat Im afraid.
dereton33 thanks buddy, I’ll just keep pushing it back down again LOL, I thought there’s not a lot to them really , no hydrolics etc, it’s better to leave the seat down, LOL. 👍😂keep safe!
Great video. Will this work in reverse? We have a rad in the bedroom that never gets that warm. Would opening this valve help or will it throw out the whole system?
THANK YOU SO MUCH. Been absalutly boiling in my babies room stopping him from sleeping 😭 this will do brilliantly till we can get a plumber out!! 🙌🙏🙏 life saver
Nice one, had exactly this problem. Replacing the TRV valve, would you replace the other end at the same time (since the system is already drained, etc.)? Thanks!
Is this safe to try if you live in a building with other people's flats above and below yours? Where else could a valve be located? It isn't on the external end of the radiator opposite the broken thermostatic radiator valve?
Great video! I’ve tried everything but mine will not turn, tried WD40 etc and nothing will work, I need to get the radiator off to decorate behind it and the water shoots out the other side. What else can I do?
Drain the heating system, you must have a valve that is not turning off properly. Make sure the thermostatic rad valve is down to zero and remember there will be water in the rad to drain out.
I was worried this wouod spring a torrent of burning water! Theres no way i can do that by using this method is there? Ill follow your advice to the letter
Thank you for this video! I watched a few of your other videos too my pin thing seems to be stuck down but my radiator is blazing hot still, so in that case will I need to replace the whole valve?
Love your videos by the way. If I turn this off (as per your video) will that stop water coming out if I loosen the valve below it (the bigger silver screw) to pack it with new tape?
my partner is having this problem, but the lockshield appears to have a large flat hexagon cap covering it. Is it ok to take this off, to expose the normal lockshield square stem underneath??
Hi mate, further to our chat on this. The big hexagon cap has the word "Danfoss" engraved on it, and when you take it off, there isn't a square stem, as I was expecting, but a 6mm Allen socket. There's quite a bit of info about them on the Danfoss website. Always something to learn!! All the best for '23 from Greater Manchester.
Just watched this and praying it will solve my problem, what with the huge hikes in prices! Just a quick question before I do it, the radiator that is the problem is in the same room as the boiler - if I turn it off like you've described, will it stop the flow to the other radiators in the house? Next question, there is another radiator in the hall way that's always boiling when all I really need is my living room one on, but I'm sure I was told years ago that the hall way one was the 'main one' which couldn't be turned off? Is that true or a load of old rubbish? :D Please reply, you would be a lifesaver! Thanks so much!
That rad in the same room as the boiler will not effect the others if you turn it off. The Rad in the hall is the bypass rad you have to leave it on. or fit an auto bypass valve. If you are using a combi boiler that has a bypass fitted inside so then you can turn the hall rad off.
My living room radiator has the same valve on both ends none are a dial type which others in the house house, this is the long radiator type. Will this still work on these ends please?
Thank you so much for this video, like many others we almost call a plumber 🎉, because the room is like a desert, i couldnt sleep and my husband always feel cold somehow 😂😂. Also do you recommend replacing the whole valve kit on the other end? Mine is Mistral II
It being November 2022 and the price of gas & electric going through the roof how much will I have saved watching your UA-cam video on bypassing a bust thermostat (even temporary). Many thanks👍
Hi dereton33, is there a way to set the TRV to position 4 and then remove the TRV cap so no further adjustment can be made. Mother-in-law has dementia and keeps messing with the TRV and turning them off when she thinks she is turning them up, so end up freezing all night and then blaming the carers for turning things off on purpose. Will this cause any leaks if completely shut off just from that valve, my thermostat has completely snapped off so is this completely safe to do? Thanks

i live in a flat i have no control over the heating but i have a radiator and the cap has worn out and came off,its broke due to wear and tare. my radiator is boiling its too hot, so is it safe to turn it iff this way until it gets fixed
My new radiator the thermostatic valve will only really heat up the radiator if in 5, if I turn it to say 3 it goes cold before room has, reached temperature, is it a matter of just replacing the thermostatic valve is it faulty.
My valve isn't blocked just stuck. I just twisted it to turn it off and tried everything and it won't shift to go on any number to open the valve. It's stuck on zero. What do you do when the rotating bit is stuck?

Nice one, had exactly this problem. Replacing the TRV valve, would you replace the other end at the same time (since the system is already drained, etc.)? Thanks!
No those valves hardly get any wear.
Is this safe to try if you live in a building with other people's flats above and below yours?
Where else could a valve be located? It isn't on the external end of the radiator opposite the broken thermostatic radiator valve?
It is safe to try unless you have very old valves. Sometimes they are located on the pipework.
Very clear and well demonstrated. Thank you.

Thank you so much my room really overheated and I had no idea what to do. This really helped
You're so welcome!
Hi, my valve is on the other end of the radiator - do you still turn it clockwise to shut it off? It hasn’t seemed to work? Thanks!
That is correct, always clockwise.
