I am blue-eyed, blond-hair & fair-skinned...and I have worked to erase my accent, one assumes by looking at me that I am American (I am an immigrant), but I am mixed & I have never used the race card. I allow people to assume and when they ask, I tell them. It should never be made into this big a deal unless someone has treated me horribly. Then, I would assume they have the problem.

Well said . I think for the greater part it is often the case that most people fail in life at most things they attempt ,then we look for an excuse for our failings ,we rarely blame ourselves . So it would naturally follow that if you are black in a majority white country you will be tempted to grab the race card and play it .

When the Queen was a young woman, there was no internet and social media, and broadcast media was nothing like as colossal as it is today.

Well I don't know about you but the woman who criticised Laurence as being a "white privileged male" was far from respectful. It was a low blow, as if to say that he doesn't have a right to an opinion and criticise Megan because she's black. The press went after Sarah Ferguson after her divorce from Prince Andrew, and her private life thereafter was heavily scrutinised. So to say that this is about race is ridiculous, because last time I looked Sarah was a white woman who came from a upper class background. Yeah she probably was told it might be a terrible experience. Even so, it's one thing to intellectually understand something and a totally different thing to actually experience it, even if you've been mentally prepared. It's not cool how Meghan was treated by the British press and even if she was warned beforehand, why should she have to just accept it? Why should such unkind and in my opinion racist (whether consciously or unconsciously) treatment go unchallenged? Why shouldn't she stand up for herself? Why are people so much more concerned about class and royalty and tradition? She should be able to marry a person, prince or whoever, without having to face chronic abuse in the media.

@@waynejansen8355 We can't see the whole picture, but based on the few videos around the internet of their early interactions and on the fact that her father helped support her acting career, I'd say they did alright as parents. At the end of the day, they are far from the worse parents, and for her to just abandon him the way she shows how she has no true love for him.

I think Laurence Fox is absolutely right: we should call out racism where it exists, but not invent it where it doesn't. To do so is deeply divisive. It's a relief to hear such honesty on the BBC.

As a mixed race person of brown and white background brought up in the UK, it is clear to me that white middle aged people HATE when the word "racism" is used as it reminds them that it exists and they want to believe that the country has come a long way (which is has). As a male, I would never preach to a women about what child birth was like. I've never experienced it, just in the same way a middle aged white person probably hasn't experienced racism to tell me that it doesn't exist. People of colour know very well when it exists just like a woman knows when she's giving birth and how it feels.
This whole discussion from the BBC was racist and your views are biased and unfair too. When will we see the mainstream media discuss racism properly. The woman at the back of the audience should be at the front and the audience should have had far more minorities in it. The woman playing the race card is Rachel Boyle. She's a lecturer on Race & Ethnicity at Edge Hill University. Race and ethnicity studies are a sham discipline that have no application in the real world and are only sustained via the artifice of government subsidy. The need to combat racism - real or imagined - is one of the main reasons used to justify the continuance of these studies. She has a financial interest in sustaining racial discord.
She was always biracial and was warmly accepted. I think what changed was that they got to know her then the trouble started over her personality which was proving to be very difficult!

I feel that people are throwing the racist card out there far too often when you don't like something! We need to start looking at what's really racist and what's not.
Using the race card is also being racist. It's often used to gain advantage, not remain equal. Good people who want to do the right thing, seem to be blind to that and end up being used as pawns, like the lady who spoke out here. She was clearly a good woman with good intentions but she is being manipulated by a racist woman who values her colour above white. We should strive for race equality not race superiority. First generation American, Army vet who has always heard Harry was a good soldier and humanitarian. I’ve not met him directly but I have deployed with Team Rubicon many times. Harry is a member of Team Rubicon and those who have volunteered beside him have said only good things about him. I was only aware he had married an American, I glanced through coverage of their wedding and was very happy for him. Being bored and quarantined I’ve researched how they are doing. I noticed how miserable he looks, how she literally manhandles him and has an obnoxious phony way way of speaking. I don’t like her and wondered if she was using Harry’s emotional injuries to control him when I learned about Canada and LA. He’s a combat vet x2, 90% of which have PTSD at some level. Vets are often manipulated and taken advantage of. It’s pretty obvious she’s isolating and dominating him. Then I learned she’s black and claims that is why public opinion of her is so bad. I had no idea she was black until a week ago. As someone married to a man of a different race/ethnicity it’s offensive she plays the race card instead of acknowledging her bullying behavior is the reason most don’t like her. Very sad bc Meghan could have been a wonderful of example of an inspirational American woman of color. Instead she’s a total embarrassment.

TMZ broke the story about Kobe (and later got slammed for doing so before the families were notified). Then we all spent the rest of the day trying to find out what really happened. How many were on the copter, who was on the copter, etc. Everyone was freaking out and at one point, for about a full hour, the most reliable news I was getting was from my 13 yr. old who was at her game with her coach (who knew him and Gigi). Can you imagine if there were a National emergency and we needed reliable info and direction? It is scary to think that we have no real system in place. I watched Suits for 2 season and didn't even know Meghan is mixed race until I saw the picture of her, her mum and Harry in the news and I thought her mum looks so cool. The media loved hers at the first place, now it changes. I think it's mostly about what she did, not her race. I'm Thai and definitely know what racism is. In my opinion we should not play the race card all the time. We have to prove ourselves, ignore racist, keep doing the good things and one day we can win people's heart.

I remember when one royal member wore the black African broach on her first meeting with Meghan. I also remember how a couple other royal family members smirked during the wedding when the black clergyman gave his sermon. I remember when Piers Morgan called Meghan 'uppity'.
In the US, there is a nasty Jim Crow law that existed over 120 years that dictated your race if you were 1/4 black (grandparent). If the case was one of your grandparents was black you were black and thus could be legally discriminated against. Though racial discrimination is illegal, it still runs deep in American culture.
The word 'uppity' used against a black person or bi-racial person in American culture has a strong racist connotation.

Sounds all very good. Very positive. However, what you just described is the result of living with racism. You have to PROVE yourself's worth to others. You have to ignore racism and not confront it. And ONE DAY maybe you will win them over. You might not...you might fail or you might succeed but the burden of effort is on you.
THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE EXPERIENCE RACISM. Why must the burden be placed on the person who experiences the racism? Why cannot the racist be the ones to change their view and behaviors?
