Really cool to see these vids with how to ACTUALLY edit. When I edit photos, I feel like I just don’t know when to stop.
That’s a really good point. I think there’s a few indicators I use: have I created too much contrast? Is it to saturated? Have I used clarity/deglaze/texture too much? Is the exposure allowing the detail in the shadows and highlights to be seen? Are there parts of the image that need extra emphasis? Is the white balance accurate to what enhances the scene? I think all these should be answered 24 hours after the first edit on those really important images. That space gives the chance to see the image afresh. I hope this helps. I think I just wrote a future video script 👊 lol

Loved this video Ralph! This is one type of photography I've never done but am keen to try it. We have the same issue with light pollution here near Miami but out in the Everglades swamp it should work. Amazing tree you found there, so much character! Great tutorial in how to edit it as well. Thanks heaps Paul. You’d need to be careful of being eaten by an slogan or out there wouldn’t ya? Or a panther ;) light pollution is the worst but I also love the challenge of wrestling with its affects and prevailing. Pitch black is such a luxury!! Haha

One thing I didn‘t understand is why the auto align of layers is necessary. The camera did not move. Was there a lot of wind so the tree moved?
Thanks mate. Super stoked it helped. Every time you take a sequence of images the camera moves ever so slightly. It’s unavoidable in all conditions. With Astro, pin sharp detail is essential as the stars are so small. So a movement of say half a millimetre over a two hour shoot gives you a final slightly blurry image when it should and could be pin sharp 👌
Any ideas on whether this would work good on Nikon d5600?
It would but it depends what lens you use and because it’s crop sensor you’d likely not get quite as good results. But it’d should come close.

Hey Ralph, The Nikon Interval shooting often breaks after 30 to 40 shots when I ask the camera to take 100 shots... I had a Nikon D610 and now Z6 both show a similar problem. Can you guide me if you ever faced a similar issue and how you resolve it?
Is it the reason you chose 9009 images and got 153 images? Can you please explain why this happens so and what is the logic so that I can put it into practice
I’ve had the same experience unfortunately. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t 😥 it’s really disappointing. Not sure what to do about it tbh.

@Ralph Mayhew Photography @Abhishek Dey Nikon's definition of 'interval' is the time from the beginning of one shot to the beginning of the next, not the time between images. If you want to shoot a series of 30 sec long exposures the interval needs to be set to something greater than 30 sec to give the camera time to reset. You might think all you need to do then is set it to 31 sec. Not so fast. The tricky part is that a 30 sec exposure isn't really a 30 sec exposure. It's actually 32 sec. As we know, doubling the exposure duration increases the light input by 1 stop. If you go through your exposure times and you start at 1" second, you would double it to 2", then double again to 4", then 8", and then you would expect 16", but the camera only displays 15". From there it goes to 20", 25" and finally 30". In reality, 15" displayed = 16" ; 20" = 21.333" ; 25 = 26.667; and 30" = 32", but it's cleaner to show 15, 20, 25 & 30. So, in order to set up 30" exposures properly on the Interval timer you need to dial in an interval of 33" as a minimum. This will allow a 32 sec exposure (30" displayed) plus 1 sec to recycle the camera. What was actually happening for the star trail in this video is because it was set to an interval of 0.5 sec the camera was decrementing the counter 60 shots for each of the 30 sec exposures. Therefore, for the 9009 image count setting in the interval shooting menu you'd only get around 150 images until the camera stopped, which seems to be what you got.

From memory, maybe an hour. You want to do at the very least 40 minutes.
