Alright, in short: Gintama is Rurouni Kenshin meets Futurama Longer version: Ten years ago, the samurai lost a war to space aliens, who rapidly modernized the country. Gintoki is a war veteran who lives above a bar in the kabuki district and makes a living doing odd jobs. He accidentally acquires two teenagers and a giant dog and they end up working for him. Over the course of 370ish episodes, we follow the trio as they get into really weird situations and meet a very large and very insane cast of characters. It's mostly a slice of life comedy with a few short serious arcs and randomly, it will punch you in the face with something incredibly sad, only to punch you in the dick with something stupid right afterward. We also get brief glances at Gintoki's mysterious past throughout the series that eventually culminates in one of the best, most brutal fght scenes I've ever seen. It's mostly poop and dick jokes though. Gintoki uses a wooden sword because, just like in the real meiji period, it was forbidden for citizens to carry real swords. His just so happens to be made from a very strong space tree. He bought it off an infomercial. You should check out the endings too! Some of them are good enough to be openings thenwelves. And if you yoy start the series, skip the first two episodes. They're actually filler made for a jump festival and the series starts at episode three.
gintama is like the perfect anime. Really funny, amazing emotional moments, peak story, one of the best cast of characters if not the best, the music everything is 10/10. Also Gintoki uses a wooden sword due to the sword ban but its also a metaphor that he has dulled out but sharp enough when someone needs protecting. All in all gintama is like every genre lol.

Ooo, I absolutely adore Gintama! People have already explained to you what the deal is, so I'm just gonna say that it's so much fun! You watch it for the silly moments, and suddenly you care for all those silly characters. My favorite character is Gintoki, who is such a great MC. But I actually like and enjoy all the characters in Gintama. Something very rare for me. I hope you will react to the endings as well! Edit: I also just gotta say your commentary is so enjoyable!
Most of the comedies are based on Japanese culture so there's gonna be a few stuff went over your head. Regardless, Gintama is a journey. It is slice of life, it is comedic & full of parodies, it is wholesome, it is totally random and crazy, and it is peak. Treat Gintama like a weekly sitcom, you know what I mean? Don't expect fights and stuff, just chill, sit back and enjoy the show. So Gintama is the favorite of a lot of people (🖑) or it's on the top of a lot of people and gets praise a lot so im just going to make sure people understand, if you're considering watching it primarily for its story, seriousness and fight scenes, it might be best to either don't watch it or have your hopes to the bottom. Fans over sell it but its because we went trough the grind and a lot enjoyed those moments (🖑). The show isn't bad; it offers parody, solid fight scenes, comedy, great characters, sus moments, and a bit of madness (by how dumb it is). However, it starts off slow, with almost a slice-of-life feel with outdated or complex jokes (mainly since they have to do with the Japanese culture and the Japanese puns that can't be translated) one can still ejoy them without knowing but there's a lot of them in the show so just a heads up, and the slow character introductions. when the story and the more serious stuff goes on it gets really good, although those arcs are extremely short, it shifts back to daily life and character interactions. The main appeal of the show is enjoying the characters and their quirks, with the story being a secondary focus. Some people enjoyed it without the main appeal of the show but the true impact comes when the story integrates with the characters' moments and fights. Also since the mc trio works on odd jobs (Yorozuya){work almost anything if it's for money} they can be in any ridiculous story If you're going to keep the Gintama train then we the fans are going to suggest: Gintama endings (1-30) debatably better than the openings, Yorinuki Gintama-san Op and Ed (1-6 maybe) the sleeper bangers, 1 second of every episode of Gintama (so one could understand the madness of the show), 5 minutes of Gintama out of context 1 and 2 (another understand the madness of the show), {It's better to watch at least one of the understanding the madness and then watch the fights} top 10 Gintama fights (they obviously contains spoilers so its best to watch it from Best Anime Tops so you don't get a lot of spoilers also skip fight 2). I made playlist for those you can just check them in there (my chanell) since sometimes UA-cam is ass on search's
