  • Tuvalu, one of the world's smallest independent nations, comprises nine low-lying coral atolls with a total surface area of 26 square kilometres dispersed over 1.3 million square kilometres of the central Pacific.
Tuvaluans are well known for their seafaring skills, with the Tuvalu Maritime Training Institute training approximately 120 marine cadets each year so that they have the skills necessary for employment as seafarers in merchant shipping.
With limited employment or economic opportunities the Australian Government's Seasonal Worker Programme and the Pacific Labour Scheme are tremendously important to the future of this small isolated Pacific nation.
