I came across this video while researching how to grow native rice in Michigan wetlands. Then I realized I KNOW YOU. You taught me how to french braid on the school bus as kids!
Oh my gosh, really? That so cool! Crazy small world!
I live in Alberta Canada. I purchased organic brown rice form a big box store and soaked it in water for 24 hrs (tap water). I fished through it and picked out anything that turned green. I layered that in paper towel and in a plastic bag. Most of them sprouted!!!! I have just placed them in soaked garden dirt and placed them in a window. I have done this before and forgot tow water them so I hope that I will be able to bring these to fruition this time. I have a greenhouse and I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Hi Brie, awesome video! Would you be able to make a video about how to the harvest rice? I’m curious how a home grower would get the hulls off in order to cook and eat it. Thank you so much!
That is a good question! If it is simple, I might try to grow it. Especially since grocery costs keep going up
I was going to ask the same thing!😊
You could use an enormous mortar and pestle to pound the rice, but anything that can lightly crush the rice will work. Keep in mind that all rice grows as brown rice, so you will need to process the rice more if you want white rice! Hope this helps

Troopa Records is a bot
No 🧢
With how expensive groceries are getting, I should TOTALLY try this.
It's below freezing here in KY, but I may start by growing them indoors under a grow light so I don't have to wait till summer.
Once summer comes, rice should grow really nicely. Temperatures here routinely get into the 90s in the summer, and I use a sump pump and a couple hundred feet of corrugated pipe to prevent my yard from turning into a swamp.

You’re blowing my mind. I live in zone 7 have been thinking about growing rice. Now I’m excited. Thank you for the video!
Ok, I changed my mind after learning more about harvesting. I’m sticking with Uncle Ben.
*Jesus Christ is Lord & He is coming soon. Don’t take that* 💉
its interesting to see the beginning steps, I would like to also see the harvesting process and the end results of your rice plants.
Thanks for opening my eyes & teaching me about growing grains. I had never even heard of any gardener adding grains into their landscape until you came along. I've got to give the Black Madras rice a try. Love the burgundy color! Enjoy your weekend.
*Jesus Christ is Lord & He is coming soon. Don’t take that* 💉
That’s awesome I eat rice everyday and never knew how to grow them. This was very helpful even your tips. Thanks for going through the trial to let us know!
You do not know how relieved I was to hear that you said you were from central NC, I am in a town called Sanford so getting to hear an experience from someone near the area is a big help!
Oh my favorite nursery is big bloomers! I live in Fuquay so not far away. You plan plan to visit the spring open garden here on sat 13 May 👍
@@BrieThePlantLady I will put it in my datebook! I’ve heard good things about bloomers
I am so happy I found your video, you explained this in such a simple & detailed way that even a beginner can easily understand & do themself, can't wait to see what other videos you have. Thank you for posting! 😊
I think growing rice looks amazing. Lots of varieties and the climate needed…
Excellent video! I have a few gigantic pots without drainage holes that have been sitting around for a few years, and now I'm looking forward to using them to grow rice! Thank you! 😁💖
What a legend. The world needs more people like you✨

Couple weird comments
I have 2 acres, VERY dark loam soil, and red clay subsoil, in Zone 6a, with extremely poor drainage and full sun. I'm looking for a staple crop for about 0.1 acre of my land that can handle waterlogged soil, and possibly consume water. I'm also going to grow wheat so I'll need something that can take up excess water.
Plus my wife really loves rice. Definitely going to give rice a try.
*Jesus Christ is Lord & He is coming soon. Don’t take that* 💉
U can also raise your garden bed of the soil isn’t sutitable:
@@earthangeltribe Did that as well. So far it's going... alright. It's been dryer than anticipated so I've had to water rigorously during the dry periods. But the rice itself has done its job of taking up excess water, and it has thus far helped remove excess groundwater near my wheat when it does rain. The weather has followed a pattern of staying dry for two weeks and then letting loose with a half-inch or even a full inch in one downpour. The rice helps regulate available water in the soil so the other crops don't drown.
You should grow wild rice.. it’s the healthiest
WOW.. what an awesome video.. and the BEST PART of this video. was the beginning where she stated what her Growing Zone was. THAT was fantastic.. cuz most of the videos folks make don't tell you what ZONE they are in !! BIG HELP !! thanks
Thank you for the kind words!!!
I’m super excited because I have 2 happy rice plants 😃 I will be doing it better next year. I’m glad I found you. Thanks for the info 😊

I use rice hull in place of perlite in my outdoor crops. It works well as a mulch or for poultry bedding, too.

Saaaame! Unfortunately, my heat also dries things out, so I'll have to try the container method first.
This was a very informative video☺️Thank you for this.

Brie! That's totally cool! Yo inspired me to grow wheat this year and now I just have to grow rice. I love the look of the Black Madras...it is just as pretty as Vertigo Penesedum that I paid way too much for. Thanks for the great content.
*Jesus Christ is Lord & He is coming soon. Do not take that* 💉
And awesome
Awesome... Congrat.
"I'm really giving it my best shot" I love that! Personally this video is excellent. Gave a lot of info in a short concise length. Would love to know varieties and maybe heat tolerance. But a tuber needs to hold on to some info to make more videos.... improve your sound (background noise is really not an issue... it bothers some people, but your outdoors. Lol) and your SOLID. Maybe ask Putnam give u some advise on improving sound. Thank you for your wisdom! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Thank you! It’s super easy!
Perfect vidéo
Amazing way madam...
Throughly enjoyed this video. You're doing an awesome job. I already have my rice seed. Just waiting on time to plant. I live in zone 8a. We've been through 5 bags of soil3 so far.
That’s awesome!!!!

Pretty
Very helpful video, greetings from Poland

I've got an old bathtub in my garden and want to grow rice in it!
Yes! You could grow a lot in a bathtub! Great idea!!! Plus it would be easy to drain out to dry the seed in the fall. I may need to get a bathtub!
Wey informative video. It would be helpful to see how much water was used at planting and how much wet it shooks be kept during growing.
Thank you Brie The Plant Lady, this was brilliant. Interesting. Thought one would need a massive rice paddy tbh.

this is my first video of you late night I like it
Hi brie I love your video
Great Video lots of information. I wish some people here in Australia Did Video's like yours but for Australian Weather/Heat and the some Information you give, like where to buy and when to seed. All the Information I can find is from the USA
Hi Brie, i live in the tropics (Republic of Panama). I have harvested peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, watermelon and now, i want to try with rice as imported wild rice is so expensive here... i'll try using wicking tubs so i can have the plants with water all the time!
Loved this video thanks! How do i know how much water it needs?
Just keep it saturated through the summer.
Southeast were never growing at Arizona, especially our summers.
Where temperatures can reach up to 115"+
Well I’m not trying to give advice to people in Arizona. I live in the southeast, therefore my information is most relevant for this region.
I'm guessing you're in the Triad. Here in Charlotte, we are closer to an 8A/9B. I am going to grow mine next year in those plastic kiddie pools you can get at Walmart grocery stores for around $8. If I can ever move up to my redwood preserve in Stokes Co., I have a few acres of bottomlands I can easily flood for a farm to fork supply. Any suggestions for a "gourmet variety?" It was supposed to be a nice creekside grove of 1,200 dawn redwoods, but the beavers have destroyed that scenario. This is the next best one I can think of.
thank you for this. can you show us your harvest just to get an idea?
I'm starting to grow rice
Wow.... Ur soooo pretty!
just found your channel and love it. Question do you fill your container with water?
Fill it with compost and water will fill in.
Hey I just wanted to ask do I put the water at the bottom of the pot? And also do I have to soak the seeds cuz I looked up how to plant rice an it said I have to soak the seeds?
product placement A+ 😂
Hi Brie. Thanks for your amazing chanel. Will brow basmati rice from the store germinate?
Sadly no I’ve had no germination from any rice from the grocery store. Have to buy through seed suppliers.
I have not tried rice. I want to try it.
Is there anywhere to get seeds without buying online ? If not Where can you buy different types of rice ? Also, how do you recollect seeds to sow the next year ?
Thanks for sharing! What was your yield per pot last year?
Not much, I saved all the seed to replant but I’d say per pot an estimate would be 1/4 cup
*Jesus Christ is Lord & He is coming soon. Don’t take that* 💉
Cool video. Q: Do you water in the seeds after covering? How often do you need to water the seedlings and then the grass?
Yes water after sowing and once it germinates keep the container saturated. Since it’s a pot with no holes it is easy to do. Once it develops Seed heads form you can stop watering to allow the seed to mature and dry.
@@BrieThePlantLady Thanks for you quick reply. I just found your channel today but have subscribed and can't wait to add rice to my garden. I'll probably follow your example and do pots in the front as decoration. Not sure if July is too late as my first frost is usually mid- October and I still need to order seeds. I think this will be a next year project for sure. Looking forward to watching more of your video.
Seems from other videos that store-bought brown rice will sometimes sprout. Thanks for the video :)
I tried this spring and it did not.
I live in Houston so im good
I’m in central NC! Would love to meet you!
Hi Brie, this is awesome! Where could we buy short white sticky rice seeds? I looked out on the places you referred in the video but I could find it.
Sadky it seems everyone is sold out. I will have 1oz rice seed for sale at IN PERSON EVENTS ONLY no mail order/ shipping.
*Jesus Christ is Lord & He is coming soon. Do not take that* 💉
Thanks a lot for this video! It’s very encouraging! I’m a Hare Krsna, so we all really like Basmati rice the best! Where would I be able to get Basmati rice seed?
Have you tasted your rice? Do you know how to make brown rice to white rice?
Thanks again! Hare Krsna
i recommend to put holes on the sidewall of the container, for safety, when its very rainy weather

Thanks! It’s an awesome vehicle!
Brie have you ever tried to sew wild rice seed? I really love it and it's so nutritious, please let me know what you think?
I haven’t grown it yet… haven’t found seed.
