@@saxplayingcompnerd uhm... It's actually cheaper to buy a 2x8 to cut into two 2x4s than it is to just buy two 2x4s. Also he never mentioned it even being a cheaper option. He is stating that the boards are more likely to be of better quality (straighter, less knots...) because they use better quality parts of the trees to make the wider boards. Which to most would even be worth being slightly more expensive. You'll have way less waste from trying to mill the boards flat and you won't spend nearly as much time milling either. A little research would do you some good.
For those worried about using 2by's for an outdoor bench/table or whatever and worried that it won't last, I made an outdoor workbench 7 or 8 years ago and it's still in great shape. Mine has regular 2x4's for the top and I used 4x4 fence posts for the legs. I use this table to do sanding, painting, grinding and cutting metal. When I made it I primed and painted but I think this year I'll do a quick sand of just the top and another coat or two of paint to clean it up. I love sanding on it because all that dust stays out of my shop.
Great film, so entertaining. Never understood why you wear hats, great gag. Love George Nelson designs. Awesome bench and cool use of 2x4s. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Even marine varnish doesn't last forever. No matter the wood or the finish, you're going to be touching it up once a year. Unnecessary pixelation ftw here. 😁 Great design that looks good and uses uncomplicated joinery. Thanks for sharing!
Try Tamarack you're not likely to find it at the lumber yards or box stores but the Amish seem to have it, very rot and decay resistant also affordable.
I've been planning to build a new simple desk for my office with butcher block top but butcher block tops are too expensive. I've been thinking about making my own from 2x6 raw material. I don't have jointer or planer or bandsaw, I'm thinking I can cut the boards to 2' and 4' lengths to get rid of the worst of the warps, rip them down the center and then rip off the 2 edges. Then glue them together and belt sand the top.
Yeah I definitely wasn’t aware that 2x4’s could actually look nice like that, super cool project my sister would love something like that for her garden!
I love my vintage Herman miller chairs. Its getting really hard to do but I loved going into old offices and finding gems. I'm actually trying my first new chair from them, the embody is on its way.
At 9:10 or so, you mention using a spacer with the fence when cross-cutting with a miter gauge. That’s only needed when there is to be an off cut that can get trapped between the blade and the fence. Not needed when making a dado. Love you stuff. 9:16
Awhile ago I was with my brother at a HD. I was checking 2x4's. I found one that was perfect. It didn't have a twist, a crown or a bend. I told him I almost hate to use it.
Beautiful job, I made a bench out of 2x4s a year or two ago and agree once you mill them up, they look pretty great. Also as a fellow baldy, love the blurred bald head :)
I never knew “pair of rings” was an original! This is always my favorite song in your videos and knowing you wrote and recorded it makes it that much better!
Always good to see a new video David. This turned out very nice. Hopefully you enjoy it for many years to come my friend. Can't wait to see more videos soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep making. God bless.
Finally, another sponsor! I was starting to get worried they’d all abandoned you. I did Sunday last year. Great results…when I sprayed. I was very bad at keeping up with it lol
I can't remember if I commented this before, forgive me if I have. You seem MUCH less rushed and happier in the videos these days, and I'm very happy about that.
That bench will last for many, many years. You'll get bored before it goes bad. I made benches for our backyard once out of stock pine and gave them one coat of deck stain. I had good intentions of recoating in subsequent years but never got around it it. Those benches lasted 15 years! (That's Toledo climate, BTW)
Forgive me if you've mentioned this in another video, but where else would you get wood besides a home center? I know they're not always straight, but I can't think of anywhere else near me where I could buy wood besides a home center.
Great video! Loved the super mod video segment. Can you please tell me whether I should consider doing a stretcher between the two legs? Would you add one of you did it again?
Looks really nice, though I'd be _really_ surprised if it holds up for very long. Everything that I've made from pine lumber severely warps or breaks after some exposure to the elements.
So I am watching your video in the living room and Joan is in the kitchen prepping for dinner - and she yells out, "Is that David? I can tell by the voice." Thanks for sharing the build as I didn't have to get my shop dirty. LOL!
Thanks for the video. I wasn’t interested in that bench but I figured I would give it a watch to see how you did it. The end result was impressive. I now would like to make something similar or even make one of these to sell. But I don’t have a dado, daddio or how ever you pronounce it lol. And I really don’t want to buy one. I only have one table saw and from what I’ve seen, the set up on a dado stack is a pain. What do you think of those jigs they make for this? I’m with you, they scare me. I have no issues working on my router table but that palm router is a bit scary. I’m wondering if you can use one of those jugs on the router table. I haven’t looked into it as you can see. Again, thanks for the video.
VERY familiar with Herman Miller chairs. Their Aaron chair is likely their magnum opus...it's in almost ALL the sci-fi shows and movies AND they look amazing. I prefer Steelcase as a brand for comfort but nothing LOOKS like a Herman Miller.
Why did you use 2x4's in lieu of 1x material?? My local big box store has select pine that would not have had to be milled down to the dimensiones you used.......
When I won't be using the 2x4s immediately, I have had good luck clamping them to my workbench (with stickers between the boards) while they acclimate to my shop.
depends how much moisture they have. if you dont have a moisture meter try sanding and you'll be able to tell if they are too wet as they wont sand well.
I built something similar yrs ago. Jarrah and pine. Somewhere in the green house. Wanted for potting but remarkably the dirt fell through. Who'd a figured.?!
Great video. And when I saw your shirt I immediately jumped on your website on bought myself one. Awesome! If you had that skull design in a snapback hat I would have nabbed that too.

I'm interested to hear that the dado stack scares you. Everyone has some tool that they grudgingly use - for me it's free hand routing. I'm not crazy about grinders either. In both cases, i'm constantly anticipating the bit / disc exploding and embedding itself in my head / neck / chest / and face.
I am quite concerned about the durability - even with dowels but without any brace across the legs will not hold the bench from moving from side to side for a long time... Well, unless it is only for looking at it 😅
Dave, I believe its proper name is the Daddio Stack. Named after the famed blues musician Alotta Blades.
Came for the bench, stayed for the head reveal. Great project man!
Same! As a fellow bald man I was stoked for the anticipation.
Use 2x8s instead and rip them to width. You'll have better quality wood to select from (in most cases)
lmao talk about out of touch. folks cant even afford 2x4s and these bezos types out there buying 2x8s to cut them in half.

@@artvandelay7537 Make sure you're comparing the same grade of lumber. HD here is $17 for a 2x8x8 and $10 for a 2x4x8 for Douglas fir

I can't get over the blurred melon, way too funny!

Done a lot of 2x4 and 2x8 digging lately. About 1 in 12 of them were decent enough to use for work benches.
You can use your fence with the miter gauge on non thru cuts. Especially datto cuts
Soooo the top of your head is blurred?🤣🤣🤣 Be bald and proud!!!🤣
He must fallen asleep and someone drew a penis with permanent marker.
You know, he probably has some male friends.
Maybe he had a logo like Bob’s vehicle.
He didn't blur it, it just wouldn't focus
Thé reason I subscribed to this channel. Genius
The top recommended related video shows his bald head as he's holding a saw blade up to it
Came out awesome!!!! The blurry head was the best part lol
Great film, so entertaining. Never understood why you wear hats, great gag. Love George Nelson designs. Awesome bench and cool use of 2x4s. Mahalo for sharing! : )
For those wondering, the top of Dave's head is the witness protection program😏
YEEESSSSSS Sand in the Place is back. Love the nod to history.

im in the UK and the cheapest timber you can buy here really are 13ft scaffold boards. after they have been milled they look surprisingly good

I love that you make your own music for your videos, adds a really nice unique touch :) Also, cool bench :)

The wood can still get twisted and caught in the blade which would cause it to get thrown back. Better safe than sorry.
Mighty EXPENSIVE. 2X4s here in central TEXAS cost $16 for an 18ft 2x4. B4 COVID they cost $2.19. Like the idea and it looks great.
As an art welder, I’m thinking of how to make this using steel 😂 of course it’d be heavy as hell.
That would be amazing!!

Dadoes scare the crap out of me, too. You knocked them out like a champ! Great project, David.
would you prefer to use a router table for those finger joints?
I love seeing the HF clamps...
I never knew “pair of rings” was an original! This is always my favorite song in your videos and knowing you wrote and recorded it makes it that much better!
Another winner, David! Thank you for blotting out the area that minors should not ever see, your bare dome.
Great looking bench, alternative wood is white oak ,it can be found at local sawmills.
So, only wooden dowels are holding the legs on? Any glue? Wondering how that will hold up.
Rule #4
Nice bench. Your shop whoever is ridiculously clean.

The Sunday kit should come with that sample cup and stir stick!
So, from what I see on your video after milling it looked like you were left with one-by lumber. About how much did you have to take off.

Nice build this week, old school sanding this week :)
I need 2 stop blocks now. Thanks. Good video...
Darn it, I commented too soon! Big Hefty Legs is my stage name when I’m dancing!
Dave I am digging your dirty laundry!
Now wait a few days for the warping
2x4 in my area are always still wet
I'm hoping the 36 half-lap joints fight this!

Great video, one question… why is your head pixelated ???
probably already said but doing a dado cut make the kickback issue - not really so much an issue. Still better to safe than sorry though
lol the head blur, i am going to need one soon myself
Less beard. New logo. 2 x 4s?!!! Long way from Drunken Woodworker days 🤣 Ty for always inspiring me mate 👍
Ha! I've changed.
Haha, the blur 😆
4:00 BALLLLLLDDDD
That soil grabber is a perfect apple de-corer (I dunno if thats what its actually called)
I lost it when i saw the head pixelation!
i believe the correct pronunciation is "daddy-o stack" :D

Nice, think I can do this! Great video love the poster reference
The censoring KILLED ME 😂😂😂
Thank you for the pixelation, some of us with more delicate constitutions can only handle looking at so much exposed skin.
Oh, so that's the deal. David did not want to offend the sensitive in his audience by showing too much skin. That was very thoughtful of him!
Nice bench. looks swell considering it's from cls timber. Thanks to UK law dado stacks are permitted.
I noticed you removed the Jessum rip fence guides, is there a reason you are not using them?
for this project they were just in the way. they'll be back!
How many 2x4s did you use? I can fit 8 in my car. Would this be a one trip or two trip project?
I can't recall. Definitely less than 8.
Awesome little bench, I love it. You should make an apron next!
(Day-do, not dad-o. :) also, dados on the end of a board are rabbets.)

New to your channel! Love your videos. Just wondering why you pixelate your head?
That's what, like $10,000 worth of 2x4s?😅
At least and it takes you well over four hours to sort through the stacks in order to find that many fairly straight ones!
