I don't normally comment on backing tracks, but this one has really caught my attention. Its sad, yes, but it has a haunting air to it that i have yet to find in another track. It allowed me to use different licks than most backing tracks.

That's kinda how they do things in riddim mixes. They release a really nice backing track, then several artists write and perform lyrics over them. Check out 'The message' riddim mix or 'Seasons' riddim mix, a couple of my favourites. Quite an interesting way to write music.
Wouldn't you just pick some scales and put some harmonies on it? I don't even consider myself an amateur guitarist. I'm more like someone who owns a guitar and has basic dexterity.

I love this, sometimes I feel really depressed but I'm an introvert so i use guitar to let it out but I never used a backing track and this helped so much, my fingers are numb from jamming to this, thanks for posting this
It’s interesting I find this not to be sad at all but rather melodic. The beauty in it prohibits it from being sad. I believe that whatever mood someone is in will determine the emotional response music demands. I personally believe emotions and such are paralytics to intelligence but beauty is indeed a benefactor if emotion.

30+ years ago .. I lived next door to The Eddie Van Halen of Banjo " Considered as one of the greatest banjo players ever " and my bedroom was on the side that was facing his bedroom .. .. I was always so frightened to turn my amp up .. Scared he'd go into a convulsions .. I had to use albums by some guy named Yngwie for my backing tracks .. I hated that guy Yngwie was filling in solo's on songs I was soloing over .. I wish I knew a way at the time to take his solo's off !! LOL .. .Backing tracks was something that wasn't available to guitarist years ago .. and the closet thing we could do back then was play in a band that had a bass player that went one direction and I went another .. The best thing later was a 4 tracker and they were a pain in the ass .. But now .. make a couple of keystrokes , pick a style , pick a key , Plug in the computer to a stereo , warm up the fingers , turn down the lights . plug in the amp and let loose ..

This track screams D harmonic minor! The ending of the loop where it hits the A7 chord is incredible to do a Phrygian dominant run which lends itself beautifully back to the tonic( D minor)

Actually, I think the saddest of Minor keys is F Minor. But D Minor can sound sad too! :)

C# works on the A7 chord used in this track. Also, C# is in the D harmonic minor scale. If you want to use the same scale for the whole track, you could try the D harmonic minor scale, D pentatonic, or D blues. The C natural in the pentatonic and blues scales will clash with the C# in the A7 chord, giving you a very bluesy effect.
Or you could try playing different scales on the different chords. Here are the chords:
Dm - A7 - C#dim - Dm
Bb - Gm - Gm6 - A7
