Fun Fact at 5:02: That is Robert Earl Jones, father of the late James Earl Jones, they both sound so similar. Also RIP Both of them.
Thank you for that! First seeing him on camera im like "thats james earl jones...but hes thinner...and taller...is this guy trying to impersonate him"?
That is AMAZING hearing his voice and how exact it is to James!
The voice sounded familiar but at the same time I couldn’t recognize it. Thanks
And, Paul's actor, Christopher Collet played Albert in The Langoliers. A movie NC looked at years ago.
he looks a bit like his son but with less weight and a higher voice
"Oh my god! Angela's the killer, and she's really a boy!"
"Oh my god! Someone remembered this movie and made a comedy sketch about it!!"
Also returned in the later one's all growed up.
And in return to sleepaway camp
At the end as a jumpscare.
Spoiler alert for those who didn't see it.
Also, this movie inspired Democrats to make boys into girls that turned into killers.
"Oh my God, somebody remembered this movie and wrote a comedy sketch about it!" - _Robot Chicken_
I watched robot chicken before I ever watched sleepaway camp, so sadly the big twist at the end was already ruined for me (also the crying game)
“Released just over 30 years ago in 1983”
I was born in 1983, imagine my surprise to find out I’m 30 and not 40 going on 41.
If you ever have a chance to meet Felissa Rose at a convention, do it. She is always smiling, appreciative of her fans, and has a great sense of humor.
I met her at a screening a few years back. She was so awesome and real happy to meet her fans:)
I totally agree. She is a sweetheart. I also got to meet Paul DeAngelo (Ronnie) at a convention recently.
Hell yes
I met her this past weekend at my first convention in Buffalo ny
She is a doll 😊
A Sad Fact: This is Mike Kellin's final film. He was sick during filming, but did his best to conceal it. He died of lung cancer in August 1983, three months before the film's release.
It makes me sad that when actors known they’re not well, and yet that still continue thier jobs for us.
Actors deserve our time and repesect. PERIOD.
@@traviswhitfield8045 Stupid loigc....actors dont 'deserve" either or those for simply acting....A first responder still doing their job while is is vastly more deserving
I honest don’t think actors (& people in general) should have to hide a terminal illness diagnosis, as they could die suddenly. That’s depressing. 😭
Who else watched Dead Meat's video about this movie before this one?
I meet the actress who played Angela, Felissa Rose, and she said the budget was so low, everyone had to bring there own clothes from home as their outfits. Which means all those short shorts and crop tops were actually owned by those guys lol
“That’s a dick!”
-Brad Jones
I’ve been wishing for this since Doug mentioned the title in a past review. But I never expected for this to be reality!!
Every joke possible , Doug brought his A GAME here!!
6:50 HAHAHAHA!!
I've met Felissa Rose at various conventions over the years, she's the best, and ALWAYS includes that iconic face in her fan pictures.
Kinda surprised no Snob "That's a penis!" cameo. Fresh recording, or original clip.
The aunt delivers her lines like an alien who's constantly confused whether the person she's speaking to is right next to her or on the other side of the building.
Fun Fact: Willy Kuskin, who plays one of the bullied campers, was genuinely bullied by the other kids during filming. Frank Trent Saladino, who played a camp counselor, had to step in when the other cast members took things too far.
I’m a strong beloved many kids are cause their parents could be bullies.
if it was me, id tell those kids "Hey!! you know we're making a horror movie, keep it up, and you'll be the next victim for real if you keep picking on him"
@@AfroManny15 I think he meant -I'm a strong BELIEVER that many kids are bullies because their parents were bullies.
Everytime I see this movie, all I can think about is that one quote from Robot Chicken: “Oh my god! Somebody remembered this movie and made a comedy sketch about it!”
Dead Meat introduced me to this one and let's just say James A Janisse is the guy to look for when it comes to horror films.
In November 1984, I was at Navy boot camp in Great Lakes, IL. On Friday nights, they had movies for those who graduated boot camp but were awaiting orders. Several not-yet-graduated recruits, including myself, snuck out to see the movie. It was, of course, "Sleepaway Camp." We were all so blown away by the ending. But we had to quickly sneak back to the barracks.
We couldn't talk about what we had seen, for fear of getting caught. We all had to wait until graduation on December 7th. The thrill of getting away with seeing the movie, along with the amazing ending, and not being able to talk about it, made the experience even greater. I don't care for horror films, but this is one I will never forget.
First oh boy Sleepaway Camp! You're making Dead Meat blush!
Another Fun Fact: Felissa Rose (Angela), Karen Fields (Judy), and Katherine Kamhi (Meg) were actually all quite close during filming. Katherine Kamhi said the scene where they throw Angela into the water was hard for her to shoot for that reason.
Did you write a fun fact about how they did that final shot of Angela with a dick?
Fun fact about the sequels: Angela’s actress was played by Pamela Springsteen, the sister of Bruce Springsteen!
She's Bruce's sister? I would have thought daughter! He always looked old and beat up since the 80's.
@@louisduarte8763he was born in 1949 and was a musician so it’s normal…she’s also 13 years younger than him so there’s an age gap

Ooooooh, I'm a happy camper. I love the clear blue sky and with the grace of god, I'll camp until I die! 🎶
I may have watched this entire video with The Snob's "THAT'S A DICK!" playing on loop in my head.

Person 1: I have an idea.
Person 2: Really, what is it?

There was a film Final Girls were a character KNOWS they are stuck in a horror movie (specifically a slasher her mom was in) and TRIES to not do the stupid moves characters do in slasher movies but the movie won't allow it.
I was hoping to see an announcement about NC being at Cincinnati Comic Expo this weekend. Maybe next year? I know it's a long shot, but I still try to make my shots. Btw, great choice for tonight's episode. I haven't seen this film in years.
Not that it's hard to hear, but the cook Ben is played by Robert Earl Jones, father of James Earl Jone (RIP Both Father and Son)
This movie has so many good line reads it’s hard to forget them:
“She’s a real carpenters dream: flat as a board and needs a screw!”
“Eat shit and die!” “Eat shit and live.”
A Nostalgia Critic episode being uploaded on my 21st Birthday? AWESOME!!
🎶 "Oh, I'm a happy camper. I love the summer sun. I love the trees and forest. I'm always having fun."
@@chasehedges6775it's from the sequel. Both sequels are fun and lean a lot more into horror comedy
Nope, no, uh-uh. The three Sleepaway Camp "sequels" are unofficial and non-canonical. Only 2008's Return To Sleepaway Camp is the official canonical sequel!
So, some fun facts:
The scene of Ricky standing in the doorway was always meant to be more obscured, but because the Blu-ray cleaned up some of the grime, this mistake is shown as clear as day.
Also, Ricky's actor had to be the one to be the hand seen in all the killing scenes as the mother of the actress who played Angela didn't want her involved in those scenes. The mother also turned down an equally nutty idea of the actress of Angela wearing a... toy, that lead to them making the mask for the drunk college kid who played Angela's exposed body (yeah, that body double had to drink just to do that scene which given he had to wear a lil girl's face... I get).
Also I met the actress at a con and she was great! I didn't even ask her to do the face for one of the pics I took, she just did it
Makes sense. He was definitely better-obscured in the older version I saw years and years ago.
Also, seriously, someone needs to cast Malcolm in a horror movie already. Hero, villain, he could play any part.
Cinema Snob brought this movie to my attention back in the day
Fun Fact: The guy who played Paul, Christopher Collet, was also the nerdy teen from the Stephen King Miniseries ""The Langoliers", which the Critic reviewed many years ago.
Still gotta be like top 10 best twist endings for a horror movie
It’s also better than most Friday The 13th movies in my honest opinion.
To quote the late great Norm MacDonald and something i'm sure Felissa Rose might be thinking about is “During misfortunes, nothing aggravates our condition more, than to be esteemed deserving of them.”
It was also filmed in upstate NY during the fall that's why you see brown leaves for a movie that is supposed to take place during the summer
If it wasn't for Robot Chicken, I would have no idea about this movie and it's iconic twist.
It’s a horror movie with nobody actors giving good performances, includes excellent practical effects, and has a compelling mystery going on.
These Nostalgiaween intros are the definition of unskippable.
It's been 12 years since the Cinema Snob reviewed this and it was the first time I'd ever heard of it. I went through a phase of renting horror movies in my early 20s and I never saw it available to rent anywhere. Thanks for your take on it, Critic!
Ironic since SpongeBob special was also called, SpongeBob's creepaway camp, just with the sleep taking out of it
A slasher horror film where you can root for the killer to murder everyone whose a bad person or troublemaker or someone whose useless in abusive, bullying situations and know that everyone who got murdered got what was coming to them in a satisfying way. Not going to lie. We hardly ever see films like that. And it's made an interesting story and an interesting ending that has quite a lot to reveal in a short amount of time that explains everything.
5:03-5:09
Incase Ben’s voice sounds familiar, that’s because he’s played by Robert Earl Jones, father of James Earl Jones
RIP to these legends ✝️
To quote robot chicken
OH GOD SOMEONE REMEMBER THIS MOVIE AND MAKE A COMEDY SKETCH OUT OF IT
This is a certified classic!!! One of the best twists ever too.
A film that’s a certified classic is definitely on my need to see film list
Now this is one hell of a movie. I also really need to know who came up with that ending
Holy shit a slasher on nostalgia critic? Now we need Friday the 13th! Witch one? IDFC
I saw the ending as a kid and thought it was just weird. Now I'm too scared to look or even hear it.
@@cian.o to explain the ending of the movie you have to watch the first 10 minutes of the movies to put the pieces 🧩 together
2:00 James from dead meat would love this review
Another Fun Fact: Felissa Rose was only thirteen at the time, which is unusual for a feature film. Studios usually cast actors 18 and over who look younger because of restrictions on using actors under 18 for extended-hour shoots. Also, at 13, she was too young to see her own movie in theaters.
Could you please do these as part of FanScription
• What if The Fairy Godmother wasn’t in Disney’s Cinderella (1950movie)
• What if The Great Prince of the Forest had died instead of Bambi's Mother (Disney’s Bambi)
• What if Disney’s Robin Hood 2 happened?
• The Incredibles vs The Sinister Syndicate (Beetle, Boomerang, Hydro-Man, Rhino and Speed Demon)
• What if Blue Sky’s Epic 2 happened?
• What if Aurora’s curse passed on to Prince Phillip (Disney’s Sleeping Beauty 2)
• What if Hans wasn’t in Disney’s Frozen?
• Batman vs Doctor Octopus
• Spider-man vs The Penguin
• What if Stromboli (from Pinocchio 1940movie) had won?
• What if we fixed Planet of the Apes (2001movie)
The Fog deserves a review.
I met Felissa Rose at a horror con. She was really nice and funny. She told the panel that her musician husband saw the movie as a kid and vowed to marry that girl one day, so he kinda stalked her to win her heart. They're still married and have three kids.
I think a lot of us caught on to the twist when we were shown that one of the siblings died. The siblings/twins switcheroo is one of the most prominent twists in fictions
I love seeing you cover this. Cinema Snob’s review got me to watch it. This movie is wild.
"Oh my God, somebody remembered this movie and made a comedy sketch about it!"
This movie had me laughing. I watched the performances and was reminded of a riff from MST3K : "From community theater to the big screen!"
Looking back, I think the weirdest thing about the 1980's was...all the "Daisy Duke" shorts and crop tops worn by...the boys! I was a teenage queer back then, seeing all them dudes in those crop tops: 😯 Yum.
3:05 Soon to be an Oscar winning performances from these two...
As cool as the ending is, the guy who had to wear the mask was emotionally destroyed by it. Apparently he’s never gone public out of shame.
When I was a kid I saw the scene with the curling iron and it mentally scarred me in a truly lasting way. I could NEVER forget this movie
What I adore about this movie is not only the cheesy acting or the obviously small budget, but the reactions to the ending scene. It also brings discussion about gender and trauma. I never really thought of Angela as trans, not willingly anyway. This all happened due to trauma and her crazy aunt forcing her to become something she isn't.
Angela’s face at the end is the most terrifying thing I’ve seen today
Let's face it. We only remember this movie because of Robot Chicken.
I found out about this movie from the Cinema Snob, thank you very much.
This movie is the slasher equivalent to Meatballs movie! It’s such a fun movie and I’m surprised it’s not as popular as other horror movies!
I literally just watched Sleepaway Camp yesterday and I really enjoyed it. The ending twist is absolutely insane!!!!
If you think about it, if Sleepaway Camp's intention was to be the scariest children's horror film of all time, then it should rightfully deserve that credit. A film so borderline bizarre and macabre, this probably reignited David Lynch's interest back into the mystery/suspense that revolutionized his hollywood career with Blue Velvet (1986).
I'm sure he had seen the film secondhand.
Like many of us waltzing in your local video store back in the days, the VHS horror cover arts often left a terrifying expression of fright and despair; coming from the golden age of realistic horror violence that was forbidden for younger audiences.
Friday the 13 (1980) and Sleepaway Camp were one of those for me since it echoed the novelized arts of the 1980s.
Sleepaway Camp's effectiveness in the agony of pain is what sells the weight of these kills, also.
The ending is not only a shocking one due to its dubious reveal of the killer, it also felt personal from the killer's point of view like K., The Psychopath from Angst (1983) where his pleasure comes with the fixation of having spectators be shocked by his kills. In all, throughout television syndication, never was broadcast outside cable television so it was shelved for decades until near the end of the 2000s where its ending sparked horror enthusiasts into bringing the film which is now in cult status.
Yikes....that ending. 😕😬
About Time you cover some of these Slasher Classics!
But then, having been born in the mid 1980s, there are probably a 1000 Slasher Movies from that Time alone of which many are worth watching!
And as a German where we had an easier Time getting our Hands on the Italian Slashers than the American Ones, lots of Italian Ones are worth covering as well!
MY absolute favourite is still "Dellamorte Dellamore" ("Cemetary Man" in the USA). Probably the most underrated and overlooked Movie. It's hilarious, brutal but also well written.
Definitely can recommend to Americans where this Movie isn't as well known as it is here.
Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps

Oh i also enjoy Cinema Snob. But would love to see Nostalgia Critics Take on at least some of them.
And sadly even the Cinema Snob still hasn't covered the Masterpiece that is Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetary Man)
Guess it went under the Radar in the USA, even among the Italian Film Fans
OH MY GOD. I just watched this film today to celebrate the coming Halloween and then what do I see but this popping up right as I finish? Hell yeah, NC!
Omg Sleepaway camp i love this movie! One of my top 5
“But one of them might have a slight advantage.” Even I was surprised at that joke. Lol
Critic, I also got a confession to make, I don't really care for zombie films. I appreciate Night of The Living Dead and what not but honestly, I prefer slashers over zombie films.
A Lawsuit Fact: The original artwork for the Sleepaway Camp Survival Kit DVD box set, which included the unauthorized sequels, was recalled after the American Red Cross complained about its trademarked red-cross logo appearing on the cover.
Technically, using the red cross on anything that's not officially Red Cross stuff is a WAR CRIME. Seriously.
The reveal of Angela being a boy is the only thing that sets this slasher film apart from the others.
Love the movies he choose this year
"She's a real Carpenter's Dream. Flat as a Board and needs a Screw!"
This is one of my favorite movies ever, I love the absurdity and oddness of it despite everyone Trying to play it straight, but at the same all the performances are so memorable. Everyone in this movie still speaks fondly of their time working on it years later, the production really felt like being at Summer camp for them.
if you can check out the sequels, they lean more into the dark comedy part of it, but the second one alone is Hilarious.
Ironically, the movie can be interpreted as oddly trans-affirming in spite of the underlying thought process behind the film and its twists being decidedly homophobic and transphobic by our modern standards. For much of the film, Angela's victims have it coming, and it can be viewed as a cautionary tale of the dangers of forcing people into boxes that they didn't want or choose.
Oh my god!, someone remembered this movie and made a Halloween episode of an internet comedy review show about it!
So how soon till you review The Crying Game?
I'm not into horror films in general, slasher films included, I don't like being scared.
30? 30? My brother is Christ, the movie is 41. I WISH it was 30. That would be I was 30 😂. Great review as always Doug. Thank you.
Honestly Felissa Rose is amazing in this movie and really gives it her all in this movie and is incredible nice too

1:50. Uh, Critic. 30 years ago was 1994. This movie is 40 years old.
Felissa Rose, who plays Angela, I've heard, is a very nice person in real life.
Can anyone tell me what song is playing in the background at 1:43 thank you
The old chef was James Earl Jones’s father. I remember watching this movie on the Sci-fi channel or Chiller and Jesus that ending. Fun fact you can see the double in the background before the end
Another Fun Fact: Loris Sallahian, who was 19 at the time, said filming the skinny dipping scene was tough for a lot of reasons. For one thing, the production schedule was pushed farther back into the fall, so when they filmed at 1:00am, it was very cold. Also, he agreed to do the nudity the scene required but he was very shy. They only showed their butts on camera, but he and the other guys still had to be totally naked. To make matters worse, it was supposed to be a closed set but someone forgot to tell the locals who had set up picnic baskets and lawn chairs along the lake to watch the action. Sallahian said the sight of a bunch of naked guys bouncing into the freezing water set them into "some rather questionable behavior." It got so bad he ended up walking off set until the director finally coaxed him back. But he told the director that he would only film the scene where he groped himself at the girls for running off after the guys came out of the lake if he could wear underwear. Originally he had agreed to do it naked. The director agreed.
I’m begging you to stop spamming the comment section every video, why do you keep doing this for? You’re just copy pasting the information anyway
Malcom gives me Evil James Earl Jones Vibes. Like Thulsa-dum from Conan The Barbarian with a comedic undertones, and I love it.
