Excellent video!!! I've been doing this to my peppers for the last 4 years and it's AMAZING. A little scary at first but in about a week you can see all the new side shoots. The plants are stronger and LOADED with peppers. YES it does make a difference. Bravo Gary!!!

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I've only trimmed off sick leaves. I also have trimmed a few bottom branches when the plants got a little bigger, to give them some airflow, and maybe help with soil-splash.
@@titanart6225 Pretty sure he meant the topping refers to hot peppers, not sweet ones. Lunchboxes are sweet. But I could be wrong. Gary did say try it and see what results we get - so maybe just try topping one plant and compare how it does to the rest of your sweet peppers.

Nature did this to me last season. Thought I was safe from any bad frost and one morning took all my plants. I thought I lost them. They lost all their leaves, and I had to cut their stem down. But I was told to keep watering....and they grew back beautifully. Definitely will be doing what you have shown in this video, because I know it works!! Thanks for giving an indoor growing timeline on when to pinch!!

Hi Gary - I’ve always topped off all my peppers- I like to experiment as well. I put one green bell pepper in my raised bed and another in a container - fertilized exactly the same. Both produced profusely- only exception - the container one was not as large as the raised bed, but I saw no difference in production. Looking forward to 2023 ! Ty as always.

Interesting about the tomato experiment. My first thought is the plant would have to send out a new leader so you'd be back where you started, just a week or so behind, but now I'm interested to see if it makes a difference in the strength of the stalk. Nice idea to try!
You are right leader wise. With this I am focusing on the roots too. Bigger root system but when planted, it will have less canopy to initially worry about. A fun experiment. Glad to share. I never top/prune my pepper plants until they have 6 leaves. Once you see 6 leaves, cut the tops off. I always get huge grocery store size bell peppers until the frost kills them. I had so many last year that I don't even need to plant them this Spring although I might plant a few for fresh peppers in salads. I'm in zone 7b for reference.

I have been a farm worker for a few years. I am, currently starting a farm. Johnny’s Seed gives a lot of great information. They sent me a pepper production pamphlet with one of my orders. I just read through it and it talks about topping off pepper plants. I’m a visual learner so I had to look up an example of what this would look like. The pamphlet is titled, “Bell Pepper Greenhouse Production”, but talks a little bit about field production too. So maybe it depends on if it’s grown in a greenhouse vs field, specifically for bell peppers? I do have other varieties, like my Italian peppers, so maybe this is what I will do for those types. They (Italian peppers)do seem to trellis to a taller height than other peppers that I’ve seen, in my experience.
I just never saw benefit on topping Bells but what I recommend is top of few of each variety and see how they respond. Thats the best way to learn. Hi Gary! I haven't been up to date on your videos lately. I'm back to thinking about my garden more after such a difficult 2022. I'm excited about the new growing season. My typical winter garden basically was a wash. So it's time for me to get started. NC weather can turn hot with no warning 😄. I've definitely got to get my peppers atarted.

I'm in central NC. I usually start my pepper plants at the end of February, first of March, in the greenhouse. Last year, I noticed how scorching the sun was especially in areas where there wasn't a break from the sun so I purchased some row shade cloth off Amazon and draped it over hoops during the hottest part of the day. It really helped the squash and zucchini from being so stressed.
@@ewc435black9 I usually have my peppers started before the end of January. I'm doing hoops and netting this year b/c I'm tired of fighting these squash vine borers. I've never gardened in an area where I've had this much trouble growing something as simple as zucchini. In the past I've had more zucchini than I knew what to do with. But since moving here 5 years ago, it's just awful. I have tried everything except the hoops. I have some rectangular netting contraption, but it wasn't very effective. The hoop kit that I just bought from Amazon should work better. I'm hopeful.
Duke Energy cut people's power off, here in the piedmont of NC Christmas Eve 2022. Ended up that it was a 7 degree morning. Hate to think if some greenhouses had plants, most likely they did.

So jalapeños & banana peppers should do well topped, right Gary❓Not bells or super hots like habaneros. How about a sugar rush❓This will be my first year of sugar rush peppers.
Depends a lot on the length of your growing season. I'm trying sugar rush for the first time as well. I've topped lemon drop (another C. Baccatum species) in the past and ended up with big, bushy, productive plants that didn't start producing much until September.

Thanks for this video. I've always thought about pinching the main stem but have hesitated. I will try it on some of my seedlings this year. I never like how tall they are in my cold frame but I want to start them earlier. I wonder what would happen if you pruned side shoots like tomatoes and let the main stalk grow. Maybe grow them against a trellis. Would you get a taller plant? Of course peppers are not indeterminate are they? I grow Marconi and Ajvarski peppers and they get quite tall. Maybe 4 feet before fall frost kills them.
Pinching should help. Especially if you have time to grow them longer in a cold frame. Earn 15% by becoming a Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop Affiliate. Question. Good morning first. When it comes time to up pot our vegetables do we still use the sterile seed mix we boiled to prevent the knats? They will still be inside.
I would if they are going to be inside. He mentioned that he started plantd early (in October) so he can use them to teach us. Some zones need to start earlier with peppers than in other zones.
I doesn’t appear you may not of listened all the through. Grown for props. I have a feeling, Gary will keep some of these growing until it is warm enough and will plant them out.

I am located in Denmark in a climate equivalent to your zone 7, but our growing season is some what shorter, my location is at 57,5 North. So we got less light. My question is this: how Manny weeks does a toppruning set the plant back? Wil it bee so mutch that my peppers won't have time for ripening?
It depends. Several weeks. You are probably best pruning early indoors and having stocky developed plants or just skip pruning. You dont want pruning cutting into your actual outdoor grow time. In your case I would just do more plants for more peppers. If I buy a fertilizer that is 10-10-10 if I use half the recommended amount would it be equal to the 5-5-5. The 10-10-10 seems to be the best price per pound.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I’m wondering if you got rooting hormone if it would work, maybe you can make more pepper plants after trimming the tops off. I also heard honey works as a rooting hormone also do you have any tips on how to propagate rose of Sharon tree, my father passed last year and I have a tree down at his house and his house has been sold but they said i could get clippings off of the tree and it’s very sentimental to me and I want to be able to use part of it. Thank you
They would be outdoors. This is for transplants with contained roots. The leaves help for that first 10 days for sure. But once I had all those smaller leaves, it was fine to remove them. But they would work as you said to bring in more energy for growth. No harm keeping them. I don't wont larger lush over sized leaves until the roots are well established in the ground. Excellent video!!! I've been doing this to my peppers for the last 4 years and it's AMAZING. A little scary at first but in about a week you can see all the new side shoots. The plants are stronger and LOADED with peppers. YES it does make a difference. Bravo Gary!!!
Thanks and thanks for the example. It is nerve racking when you first start.

We've done bell peppers for about 3 years and they've done great! Bushier and more peppers. We're from Minnesota.
Thank goodness you said "except for bell peppers"! Thick-walled sweet bells are my favorite, and I'd hate to make things harder for them.
I agree! So not the bell peppers but smaller peppers like lunchbox red and jalapeños? How about Cubanelles or other Frying peppers?
Prune 1 or 2 and see if you notice it helps or hinders. I found it didnt matter that much.
Yes! I topped my bellpeppers last year and they were the worst producing pepper
Thanks for thinking ahead for the up and coming season. In zone 9 so I will do this pretty soon. Just started my seed starts today.

Frost does that for sure.

Great experiment.

Good luck this year. Cheers to be a better 2023 for for sure.

Oh no.

Best way to do it is top a few and see how they do in your garden. Do 1 Jala and 1 Bana and see.

I used to do this all the time. Not sure why I stopped... The stems do thicken up quite a bit!
I stopped for a while too. No reason lol.
I’ve done this in the past, but never kept good records to compare.
I ditched bell peppers a number of years back. Bull horns have become my main crop for sweet peppers! I’ve tried so many. 🙂
Can’t wait to experiment more this season!
I’m finally giving the shishito peppers a try this year for fun. Would you bother pinching that type?

Our night temps are going to be dipping into the high 40’s this week, 60’s durning the day, would you recommend covering peppers, cukes and tomato plants? Or can they handle a few nights around 48 degrees?
They can handle the cold. They might look a bit beat up but the heat will fix them pretty quickly.

Question. Good morning first. When it comes time to up pot our vegetables do we still use the sterile seed mix we boiled to prevent the knats? They will still be inside.
I would if they are going to be inside. You dont have too as maybe they will be going out quickly but I look at... if I have seed starts that need to grow for 8 weeks or longer inside, I want thing sterile.

👍Pretty early ....aren't you gunna freeze in Feb or March there? I have also found it helpful when other gardening channels have put their growing zone in their information description box below 👇
He mentioned that he started plantd early (in October) so he can use them to teach us. Some zones need to start earlier with peppers than in other zones.
He's growing indoors
I doesn’t appear you may not of listened all the through.
Grown for props. I have a feeling, Gary will keep some of these growing until it is warm enough and will plant them out.
It is on my UA-cam channel for sure. And I mention it a lot in my videos.

Did I hear you correctly that you're starting your non-prop peppers next week? Is that just for the superhots that take longer, or do you start all of them at that time? I'm in zone 6b, so not terribly far off from you.
Yep, on the super hots but some for cold frames. It is still early.

Thanks so much
Glad to share. And best way to do things is to prune a few of a variety and see how they do things in your garden.

Would this apply to short season climates? Seems like it might hinder the yield for us.
It can.Thats why I gave guidelines. Growing them longer indoors is often better for shorter seasons. Pruning requires more time for the plants to bush out.

If I buy a fertilizer that is 10-10-10 if I use half the recommended amount would it be equal to the 5-5-5. The 10-10-10 seems to be the best price per pound.
Yes. Instead, for example, 1 cup per 10x10 space. Use 1/2 cup and it's essentially a 5-5-5.

What if I topped off my pepper plant while it’s producing peppers? Would it still send out side shoots or just focus on the peppers?
Yes. You can do this once planted and it is often done that way for long growing seasons.

Should I top off my Poblanos? They're larger than Jalapeño, but longer than a bell pepper but not as wide, so I don't know.
Top a few and that is the best way to learn. See how they respond to your garden zone.

Thank you
Why remove the large leaves? Sorry if I missed that. My logic says they're sunlight powerhouses

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thank you! My brain doesn't think in roots, yet
What about jalapeños
They do pretty well on their own. But topping helps. Top a few and leave a few. Thats the best way to learn.

Topped too low.
Not for transplants. Outdoors they can be topped again.
