Bigfoot News! The Mogollon Monster Photo Breakdown

  • This video is about a photo of an alleged bigfoot, taken in Arizona. Creatures of this description are known in the region as Mogollon Monsters--named after some infamous reports from the Mogollon Rim.
There are two competing origin stories for this photo--which I will expand upon in the video.
I don't particularly like photo or video analysis because anything can be anything-else, but this particular photo has some fascinating details.
I know these videos take me forever, so know I appreciate your patience!

@@SpeedyGamingJust call them liars, and discredit whatever comes out of their mouths - there’s no reason to have the kid gloves on, when it comes to dodgy people, in all walks of life.
Part of the problem with Sasquatch “people” is that there’s the level-headed people, and then the fringe, uneducated, and paranoid lunatics, that ruin it for everyone *cough* Scott Carpenter *cough*.
Many problems with researching and understanding this topic are caused by the weirdos that want attention, and post and believe anything in a Facebook group - then again, the people that fall for Facebook group posts are generally not intelligent, not tech-savvy, and use mob mentality to dominate anyone outside their groups.
My best advice is to look at any “evidence” of these creatures with a grain of salt, and ignore the backstory of anything on the internet. I mean, even the interview Bob did with the guy who illustrated his whole experience - I believe maybe 1/4 of what he said, and I could tell Bob was skeptical.
Do I think that guy was lying about his “sudden artistic ability”? Yes, absolutely, it’s a total lie, and just dumb - you don’t just draw like that overnight; do I believe in his experience where he got lacerated, and the events with the police? Yes. Do I believe his story about being brainwashed by government agents that were conveniently named after a King of the Hill character - God, no, that’s a total lie, and a stupid one, at that, meant to add drama to his story.
Usually I can tell a person is genuine in their story, because they aren’t selling merch, aren’t part of a BF(acronym here) group, and they aren’t having anything to gain from their story. You’d be amazed to know how many ordinary, non-redneck men and women have these experiences, every day, it’s just… how can anyone take us seriously, with all the rednecks and capitalistic windbags?

I'm an Arizona native. Lived here all my life. 44 years. My dad used to take me with him elk hunting in the Mogollon Rim country almost every year. Areas 4a 4b 5a and 5b usually.
When I was 16 we had a really weird experience. Ive never had an experience before or since like it.
Elk season is November here in AZ and its very cold up in the rim country. We were sleeping in the bed of the pick up truck when I woke up in the middle of the night to the strangest screaming/growling sounds ive ever heard in my life. I am not even sure how else to describe it. Ive heard elk, bear, mountain lion, turkey...all the animals that habitate that area and this was none of those.
Whatever it was, it was large and I could here it thrashing about in the dark outside our camp and roaring. I was terrified. It was extremely unhappy whatever it was. I will never forget that night. Ive always wondered if Bigfoot was real since then.

Hi Bob, I live in Arizona and have always heard campfire stories of the myth of the Mogollon Monster and was pretty agnostic. Until July 12, 2011. My happy place in the world is Big Lake AZ and we have annual camping trips there for over 30 years. In July 2011, the Wallow Fire had just run its course, and the vast majority of Big Lake had been spared. On Monday 7/11/11, We set up camp at the Grayling Camp ground. We were the only people there except for the camp host. At about 5:30 am on Tuesday the 12th I'm in my camp kitchen and I hear a very loud, high pitch scream I estimate less than 100 yards in the forest. I walk out to investigate, I am armed, I'm about 50 yards in when I hear an identical scream about 120 degrees to my left and behind me. I continue walking when a vary large explosive sound emanates from about 15 ft to my left against a wall of boulders that reach about 30 ft high and extend several hundred yards north to south. I hold my hand gun in a low ready defensive posture. I then see a large rock flying past me and impact the wall of boulders. That's when I see the first impact point. Then, another rock hits the same point of impact. I don't know why, but I get really angry and yell "stop throwing effing rocks". I'm looking directly, for a long moment, at the area where the rocks are coming from, and I see nothing but trees. I yell out I'll go my way. You go yours and no one gets shot that's pretty much the story. The take away for me was, what ever threw the rocks, could have hurt me severely, if not killed me, but chose not to. We did find a dead cow elk, just outside our camp 2 days later.

My neighbor has called to *warn me* that he saw a raccoon in his yard. (Also this was after he maced it and I got caught in the overspray and had a horrible asthma attack. I had no idea what had happened until he called, I'd opened the back door and it felt like inhaling an ember, I had to go in and lie down.) Apparently raccoons are shocking to him and he has seen them maybe three times in the 20 years I've lived here, so it's a reportable event.
I had to inform him that I see raccoons at least a few times a month, hahaha. I've seen them in the suburbs, I've seen them in the city, and I've seen them in the middle of the forest far from civilization. Heck, I see coyotes walking down the suburban street once in a while.
That's what happens when you tend to be up during Raccoon Hours.
I also just am always looking for wildlife. But my partner would never notice the raccoons and opossums and skunks and foxes and so on if I didn't point them out, even if he's up at the same time as me. (But thankfully he doesn't think they need to be maced.) I definitely think more people don't see them all the time than do; they have other things that interest them and keep their attention.

April was in regards to the story of the man with the cellphone who saw it carrying wood. The deer story was said to have been uploaded in July ‘07, but no more details on the date. I’m not disagreeing with you at all, just pointing out the dates given for which story. If it was the story of the surveillance camera image uploaded in July, it very well may have been taken in April, who knows.
The man who supposedly captured the image on his phone could look at the details of the picture and prove the date. I wish that’s what would’ve happened. Otherwise there’s too much speculation. Great line of thinking tho with the velvet in April. I certainly wouldn’t have thought about that.

They are much smaller than mule deer and whitetails as well. If it is that species, then that would explain the bulk of the body and antler size as this would be the size of a mature buck of that kind.

I, too, am an Arizona native. I have been gathering info on the Mogollon Monster for a while now. The accounts both historical and modern tend to describe a creature not as tall as its Northwest cousin. Though it may be slightly shorter, it is supposedly muscular in the extreme and much more aggressive. One of the early accounts from the Rim has the observer coming upon an older individual (as evidenced by its greying fur) pulling the head off a deer it had just killed. It reacted in a very aggressive manner. A modern account is somewhat humorous. A couple pulled over one snowy night outside of Flagstaff to study a map. As they sat there, one slid down an embankment (most likely betrayed by the slippery conditions) and stopped just in front of their car (Bigfoot in the headlights). In the midst of an oh-shit moment, the creature looked around nervously, ran its tongue over its teeth, and then bigfooted it across the road.

One theory that I have heard about the south west bigfoots is that since they could be cut off from their native range and live in pockets, they have been forced to inbreed. Prints have been found with odd numbers of digits; inbreeding can lead to mental deficiency and higher likelihood of aggressive behavior so I think it checks out as a theory. I think it is touched in Survivorman: Bigfoot, the one where he goes to the SW/four corners area

Bob as a Navajo, there are stories of these creatures of the forest that have been anecdotally passed down, one i recall is that during the long walk period where we are at odds with the US army some families would unfortunately abandon their special needs kids to the Mesa tops rather than be killed outright by US troops who would shoot stragglers who went on the forced March. Rather than perish when their families returned after 1868 to mourn they were told that they had remained in the care of these beings who had taken pity on them and brought them sustenance during this time.

It just makes us value your work even more when we get it after having had to wait a while for it. And for my part, personally, even though I know it can never be proven one way or another with any definitive certainty, I am convinced that what we see in that photo is absolutely what people would call "Bigfoot". It takes a lot to convince me, even though I'm sure such creatures exist. This photo (which I've never seen prior to this video), the Patterson/Gimlin film of course, and maybe one or two others are the only ones I really feel certain about. I love your discussion toward the end about the gorillas you took photos of. It causes me no end of frustration hearing people go on about the low quality of photos, knowing the whole time that if the photos were crisp and clear they would just call them "fake". And that's on top of the culture that has been bred online that has a large portion of the populace calling basically EVERYTHING "fake". People really need to take the time to think a bit deeper about such things. I greatly appreciate the work you do, Bob. I look forward to every new upload from you no matter how long it takes. See Clay Newcomb's story about Moose, the enormous atypical white-tailed buck from the most recent episode of the Bear Grease Podcast. In Moose's case, he varied from 10 points to 8 points to a large atypical rack over the years. Deer are weird.

If you rely on smart phone to shoot pictures of wildlife from a distance, while moving, in natural light, amongst all the light and shadow created by vegetation, against a nature backdrop you’ll likely capture a blurry image that is focused on the background not the intended subject. The only way to get it right is to focus on the where the subject will soon be, then get all of your other setting correct Including shutter speed, iso, f-fstop, etc then time it perfectly. Most people don’t even know what theses setting do and rely 100% on the camera software to make the decisions- which it will often get entirely wrong in nature when used by an amateur.
Don’t forget the time it takes to dig your phone out, unlock it, access the camera app, during which you’ve likely already missed your window of opportunity. Then make it even harder to focus or take the photo due to fear and adrenaline.

@@mikelucas9916 I had a Mutual of Omaha front row experience not too long ago. I had a thousand dollars of tech in my hand at the precise moment required. My thumb was already in the optimal position to swipe closed the app that was open, open the camera and take the photo. I did none of it. Why? Well because a bird of prey, either a red tail hawk or something else caught a squirrel not 50 feet from me. This happened in my backyard and before I could mentally complete the transaction. A Bald F-ING Eagle swooped in and struck the hawk. Like an all pro defensive player in the NFL. The squirrel freed for fractions of a second had it's hope evaporated like a puddle in the sun. As the Eagles leg swung around like a martial artist and then straight down onto the poor thing. Grasping it with his human hand sized clawed foot. Shaking it as it perfectly kept it's balance on the other. His wings fully deployed assisting him to maintain that balance. As he completely ignored the hawk that was busy with his own more successful escape from death. It is something that I will never forget. Not even the tiniest detail will ever leave my mind. All the while my thumb was millimeters from capturing it all on high quality high definition video at best or at least inside a single frame of smartphone camera wizardry. It simply wasn't meant to be however. My subconscious mind had other plans for the event. No matter the logical arguments for me taking an action that day. The shock, beauty and awe of mother nature left me in stasis. As I am positive a Bigfoot sighting most certainly does. Imagine being a none hunter, none National Geographic page turner, a solely city dwelling human being in the woods for the 1st, 2nd or 3rd in your entire life. When all of a sudden there before stands a myth. A legend 7,8 or 9 feet tall that's slowly rocking side to side. Really try to imagine that being you. Excellent presentation! Thank you Bob for sharing it with us all! The fact that this person was able to be calm enough to grab a photo is amazing. I think it is an older cellular phone and the motion of his arm is what made made the image blurry. I know when I take cellular phone photographs that most captures come out blurry from arm shake. Older model phones do not have steady capture. I also think, that this image is compelling in its simplistic form and structure. Without knowing details such as the height of the trees and brush, it's difficult to give a more definitive height comparison. At first, I could not allow myself to find credence to either story, which is presented, as to what was being carried. However, seeing as how straight the back was, I had to think, and I can agree that the back and neck angle looks askew. If we think about it however, the deer is clearly deceased and it's neck probably could be broken. Maybe photos of roadkill deer being loaded could be helpful and if we think about it, a broken neck on a deceased deer, would not hang the same as a riga mortis deer. So I think that may help in further analysis of the photo. Thank you again for such a thought provoking presentation!

Want to let you know that the specific type of white-tailed deer that the Mogollon Monster was carrying off was probably a coues deer (smaller than the average white-tailed deer, but they follow the same factors to their growth as any other subspecies of white-tailed deer).

Oh bob the reason the deer looks like it’s pressing it’s nose into it’s chest (10:40) is probably due to the weight of the rack being pulled down

Thanks Bob. Wonderful insights as always. I would think that analysis of spur-of-the-moment photography is a slippery slope at best. Today’s phone, whilst being good to very good, are not cameras. Cameras are not phones. Who carries a camera around with them these days?? (I sometimes do.) Would a photo from a true camera catch anything different, better in these situations? Maybe, possibly not. Carrying a phone with a camera doesn’t automatically make the carrier a photographer. I’m a photographer and I take crappy photos on a regular basis. I often take good photos too. I suppose the point I’m meandering towards is this: you do a great job with what you have to work! I sincerely look forward to more in the future!!! Thanks again!!!

While I agree that a camera phone doesn't make you a photographer but these new phones, hell even ones from 5 yrs ago, take better pics that what is shown here. This is too grainy and washed out to be from a modern phone camera. I'm not even talking about the actual figure but everything surrounding the figure should have been crisper and at least more vibrant. I can see the figure, especially if it is moving at a fast pace, being difficult to capture, but the surrounding foliage and terrain should look better than it does in this pic.
I'd believe that this was captured in 2007 over being captured in 2022. As for it being security camera footage, who knows? Like Bob said, why not a full video? Unless they meant trail cam instead of security cam. It could be that this is all that the person could get from the video........or, the most likely scenario is that this just a fake meant to stir the Bigfoot pot.

The deer almost looks like one of those plastic and foam targets. Like for bow and arrow practice. I wonder if that’s how it’s being easily carried under the arm

You're right with the "criticism from other skeptics". I've seen with my own eyes a progression of trail cam pics of a Bigfoot walking towards it, all the time deer feeding from a corn pile. The last 2 pics were head on and another side profile walking away. Deer were there the whole time. I met a guy that had a Bigfoot visit his farm every spring. It would take some chickens, and he's seen it. BFRO didn't care to look into it, blowing me off. I had these people's names, addresses, and phone #s. After that, why even try telling anyone? I've seen crystal clear full body shots of the thing, it's real and that's all that really matters to me.

I lived in Northern Arizona for 10 years and had a few run ins with these things. Saw one near Humphreys peak for just a second, just a flash of a tall upright red haired thing after two tree knocks. And I had a strange experience near Mormon lake, of a owl sound that was way to loud and big, and didn't really sound like a bird

I reallly enjoyed watching you go through the analysis process, Bob. Your presentations are always first rate. Personally, I see the "head" of something on the mid-back in profile, snout pointing upward and a line of light from under the "chin/cheek" cascading down from there to a bent leg. What looks like antlers, appears much like the bramble of sticks and bushes to the left side of the image. And that "foot" could be just a sortened perspective by appearance because of the angle is it was conceivably stepping over something. Either way, your analysis is fascinating and highly worth consideration as always.

@@BobGymlan Talking AZ deer. Mule deer are much more common than whitetails here. The whitetails that we do have are a subspecies called coues deer, they are smaller than the eastern whitetail that you are probably familiar with. Not like any of this discredits your conclusion, but I am curious it changes your height estimate.

I really liked this video for how it illustrates the conundrum of trying to use a single photo to develop a thesis of the event being captured. A single photo shows that an event occurred. But what exactly that event was is subject to interpretation. And an analysis of the single photo by different people or even the same person can result in different conclusions.
In this particular case, we're provided with two origin stories which provide some framework around interpreting the event. But there's nothing to support the origin stories themselves, so interpretation of the event could all be nonsense right? Logical arguments (or an analysis in this case) are only as good as the validity of the assumptions underlying the argument/analysis.
Now, if the gentleman who took the photo provided the actual photo file which would have had all kinds of metadata embedded in it, that could go a long way to supporting his story versus the story about the security camera. It'd be nice if the Rocky mountain organization could have gotten the original photo file.

As always Bob, thanks an awful lot for speaking. It is always a good day when you post a video. Just curious, seeing as nothing in the image seems to be in focus, can we tell the difference between lack of any depth of field and overall motion blur ?

That's not a deer or a piece of wood, I believe it looks like the creatures arm swinging backwards and the sunlight is reflecting off of its skin and hair. The sasquatch have really long arms, so long that they hang down past their knees. Also, the size of the musculature in it's back is insane!

Hi Bob, I have a few friendly opinions...
#1 if this is a photo taken from a vehicle driving down a dirt road, they must have stopped as the picture has no motion blur as one would expect from a moving car.
#2 I interpret the deer/wood as the back of a very long forearm with the upper arm being hidden behind a hunched/muscled back. The supposed antlers look very similar to the other vegetation shown in the pic so I'm not sure if it is even relevant.
I know this deviates from both stories so it provides no answers, just more questions. But that's usually how things go with these creatures 🤔
Thanks for another interesting video, it's always a highlight to my day when you post
