This song touches me deeply. Nick Drake was a fantastic melodist, songwriter, guitarist, and lyricist. This song is a distillation of all of his talents. One can feel every bit of the emotion he put into this song though we’re very distant in both time and space from him now. It will always bring tears to my eyes.
He was such an intelligent, vulnerable and beautiful songwriter. The way he wrote about the beauty he saw was otherworldly poetic. He wasn't a singer-songwriter of his time, his music transcends time. That's why his songs will continue to be 'found' by each generation that passes. I feel blessed that i found his music and how much the songs of Nick Drake have given me.
On this and his other demos, I’m struck by the power of his guitar playing. For all his soft spoken, introspective image, he’s got a bold hand on the guitar.
There’s such a determined delicacy to his playing as well, it seems as though he could play as “aggressively” as he wanted and it would still end up sounding gentle and restrained. He put his entire soul into his playing.
@@bmxmyth166 Excellent description. By the reports I read, he would play guitar incessantly for hours at a time, at least partly to perfect the chords and notes that he wanted to use in a song. His obsession was his way of sinking into the heart of the music that he felt compelled to play. Then it came out with such a unique combination of melancholy, longing, loneliness and despair that still manages to be beautiful. That takes a special kind of magic.
That's a good point. He seemed to be very devoted to the guitar and practiced for hours to hone his craft into something not technical but entirely soulful. He had large hands and seemed to be very adept at playing the guitar, so the instrument was a natural extension of him. That strength shows up in the playing that is both bold and tender. Strange and unique qualities in his playing.
My schizophrenic uncle finally passed on to God, he was what some would call a saint by practice. A devout man to his faith. He was so gentle and smiled through a whisper. He struggled. They think Nick was schizophrenic and when I hear this it's a voice piece of some internal order passed on by those suffering. I can't recall weeping as hard as now. I love him so much it's like discovering him again.
at least two psychiatrists diagnosed schizophrenia, but he wasn't having any of it. that's what killed him in the end. he just couldn't accept he was desperately ill and needed emergency intervention and urgent care.
this Home recording version is the greatest version I have seen from an artist in his intimate home, that's very rare, we get to feel exactly like he felt in the dark of his most personal place, his voice in the most emotional state, much more than the studio version. This is authenticity, makes me cry.
When I was younger, younger than before I never saw the truth hanging from the door And now I'm older see it face to face And now I'm older gotta get up clean the place. And I was green, greener than the hill Where the flowers grew and the sun shone still Now I'm darker than the deepest sea Just hand me down, give me a place to be. And I was strong, strong in the sun I thought I'd see when day is done Now I'm weaker than the palest blue Oh, so weak in this need for you.
God this song really takes me somewhere. On a long walk around my green neighborhood with the sun coming down, a shade of melancholy purple over everything, very humid air that brings a dampness to the skin, a feeling of longing, of striving for something i know i’ll never get. That was years ago, and I really feel for the person I was during that memory. He had so much to go through still. Much love for Nick Drake.
A beautiful way to explain the music of Nick Drake. Apart from the sun coming down, what lovely words you wrote reminded me of his beautiful song From The Morning. Thanks for a beautiful post.🙏
I'm so glad I walked into a small independent record store one day about 22 years ago and I heard Cello Song playing. I had'nt heard of Nick Drake at that point. In my ignorance I thought it was Donovan ( I think he sounds a little like Donovan) so I went to the counter and asked what Donovan album is this from ( as I have quite a few Donovan albums), the man smiled and said it's Nick Drake. I left the shop with Nick Drake's compilation Way To Blue and was blown away. On some comment about Nick Drake somebody had said God always finds a way for people to find Nick Drake. That is exactly what happened to me on that very day. I walked into that shop at exactly the same time Cello Song was playing. Still one of my favourite's because it was the first one I heard. I have Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter and Pink Moon. Also some rarities compilations. God found a way for me to find Nick Drake on that sunny day 22 years ago. Thank You. ✌️
Couldn't have put it any better, friend. Back in 2000 when I was living in LA I was out buying records at the HMV on Sunset one Sunday after partying all night. Stumbled on the Way to Blue compilation at one of those listening stations and was blown away. Add to the fact that I realized much later after buying it that Pink Moon was the song from "that commercial". Didn't matter; there were tons of other songs that completely held me in a trance. Most of all Northern Sky. God found a way for me to hear Nick and I'm grateful for it. I always come back to Nicks music and I'm reassured all over again.
@@3hooks781 Great post friend. Sounds like you had the same experience as myself. You in LA and me in north england. Northern Sky is a beautiful track. He wrote such beautiful songs. Thanks and take care man.
What an artist..damaged in many ways but was able to paint some beautiful masterpieces before he left us, the world was too much for him and he was too much for the world
Can't hold the tears, I always get emotional ... The man had such a pure soul that I can almost feel it, I suppose this world was really too much for him, but he is still there enchanting us with his so beautiful music. I just feel greatful
So beautiful. Gives me goose bumps. I know of few other artists whose music reaches me in the way Nicks music does. Timeless. Without doubt one of the greatest singer songwriters and guitar players this country has produced. My very humble opinion.
This hits home every time I listen to it. Music like this I will carry for the rest of my life. This song brings me to a dark state of nostalgia, probably one of the most private pieces of music to me. I think about my father and the good times I had with him during my childhood. I’m glad I’m not alone, and I’m happy to share similar emotions with you all.
I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels so sad for Nick. He never knew he would end up having so many fans that love his music. He poured his heart out in these wonderful songs. How did he tune all those strange tunings without modern tuners?
l am, at best a cold and distant person but this guys music speaks to me. this is the first time l have listened to this artist and lam 57, but l will be getting to know the rest of his music" starting right now".
***** l know what you mean ! l was engrossed with the glam scene in the early 70,s and Slade were my band , but finding this chap all these years later has opened my eyes to stuff l ignored at the time "probably because it didn,t seem hip at the time ".l will take a look at Elliot smith. Thanks !
+robert harding Hi, if you like Elliot Smith as well as Nick Drake you may like some of my music. They seem to rotate both artist on my Pandora station. I just recently submitted my first work of recordings to Pandora and they approved it. My album is "Don't Let Me Go". Just wanted to share as I know Nick Drake has had a huge influence on my style of playing and writing and he remains my favorite artist. Thanks.
+Ryan Montgomery Was pleased to see that you're on Spotify as well. Just listened to One More Day, and absolutely loved the sound. Will do more tomorrow, as it's stupidly late at the moment, but I loved its structure.
+Ryan Montgomery Okay, so I lied; I just jumped to My Friend after One More Day, and I absolutely loved it. I'm not a musician, so I don't know how to explain WHY I love it, but suffice it to say I love when music catches me unawares. When it surprises me. This song, the guitar... I don't know how to describe it. It's not dissonance, I think? And it's not "false"? It's just... DIFFERENT. If you know what word to use, I'd love to be enlightened; the use is clearly by design. I can't wait for tomorrow to listen to the rest, but that was just stellar. It makes me laugh, in a good way - like Friska Viljor's "Streetlights" does. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Thank you for making interesting music.
Nicks music hits me with a barrage of emotions every time I listen to him, peacefulness, sadness, empathy, and probably most prominent- bittersweet happiness. My mind is always filled with what-ifs when I listen to him. What if he would of developed a fan base when he was alive, what if he found his lover, what if he had just one fan tell him how much of an impact his music would have on the world.. I believe it was in a documentary where Nick said he wished he could hear one person say..
No wonderful poor Nick was so depressed believing people would buy his music when only about 10k did across the three albums. Your recognition though Nick will go on through the ages long beyond almost all others. Pure genius and as someone on here said he plays the guitar like an angel plays a harp. RIP Nick.
oh my god. this is unbelievable . love hazey jane home recording too but listen to that guitar! it makes me so sad that nick had to go so soon. i mean, what a talent! love you nick
When I first heard this song it put me into another place of existence, I have never heard a song that is so haunting and deeply personal as this one. Nick you are one of a kind and one of the kindest too.
This song takes me back to last winter. I was not feeling very well and this music just cleansed my soul by taking me to the darkest places i've ever seen in my mind. Pure beauty. This recording brings the song back to life after I've worn out the record version haha
This is a gorgeous, aching, painfully beautiful version of the song. Very raw, totally unpretentious and intimate, with Nick Drake singing lyrics that are emotionally searing. Such music is indescribable but very precious. For those who haven't heard the alternate (home recording?) version of "Parasite" posted on this site (titled "Parasite I"), I highly recommend that to you. It's so harrowing that it's strangely scary.
I've known of Nick Drake for years but only recently have I started exploring his work. I feel that his early death is one of the great tragedies of popular music. I am often deeply moved when listening to his songs & "Place to be" is a strong favourite at the time of writing. One thing this home recording shows is Nick Drake's impressive guitar technique. He may been a very sensitive artist but he had a very robust technical facility when it came to guitar. Many thanks for uploading this.
It's rare to find a musician who bares their soul , nick Drake did just that and I for one am thankful , the beauty and the sadness of this world shines through his music .
So much talent!! Oh, Nick, you are incredible. So sweet and so perfect! Your songs makes me feel better when I'm sad. It's like a consolation because your lyrics always seem to have been written to describe how I feel. Thank you for Nick, God. He was amazing.
There has always been a quality about his lyrics, his voice, his guitarwork that has struck me to my very inner being. I cannot help but be moved and introspect.
Gosh I wish he'd have recorded this version... Simply spellbound.

Also at 57, why are Nick Drake's songs so close to our souls? Maybe because he was so sincere. Now learning his "Place to be" I am rediscovering myself and my life. Thank you Nick!
Always wondered how this version never made it to the album ... I like the album version (strumming) also, but this finger picking version is stunning. Thanks for sharing!
I agree that nicks death is a tragedy. He was so talented but unfortunately his condition became so intolerable. A lot of people still suffer. But we find some solace in his music and his words. Love u nick

Can someone proficient in guitar explain what he's doing starting at about 01:35 during the little interlude of sorts? How exactly does he make it sound like two/three guitars playing? I'm a lover of acoustic guitar and am vaguely aware of his fingering style but this is in another league even compared to his other recordings. His playing is my favorite. It reminds me a bit of Lead Belly. But Lead Belly played a 12 string. Would that have made Nick's play style easier? Or no? I'm sure Nick liked Lead Belly since he was a fan of other American Folk/Blues-men of that era. I've always wondered if he owned a 12 string, though I'm sure if he preferred one he would have used it. And I don't think there's a recording where he ever did. I've played this exact video probably 100 times in the last year alone and every time my heart melts at his playing. It wraps around my soul. It's probably my favorite piece of music ever, of all time. This recording. I wish we could see him play it, I want to see his hands move about and stretch across the strings. I know Nick was very tall at 6'3 and would have had big hands and long fingers. Would that have helped him play this? I know that's like a million questions in one but when you don't understand the logistics that's bound to happen. Lol.
His guitar picking sounds like something out nature, like the rain or the river that influenced him so much.
Copied a piano i heard
That's the perfect description of it. So natural.
Right jay, or as the sorrow in his soul

Nick has piano-like velocity with guitar playing. A very rare ability in fingerstyle guitar players.
@@tehee-Wow, you are exactly right.
If my soul could be reflected in a song, I hope to the stars it would be this one.
Thank you. I feel the same way.
Without doubt the most beautiful and intimate recording I’ve ever heard, so raw and organic
I wish you all the best 🙏
at least two psychiatrists diagnosed schizophrenia, but he wasn't having any of it. that's what killed him in the end. he just couldn't accept he was desperately ill and needed emergency intervention and urgent care.
this Home recording version is the greatest version I have seen from an artist in his intimate home, that's very rare, we get to feel exactly like he felt in the dark of his most personal place, his voice in the most emotional state, much more than the studio version. This is authenticity, makes me cry.
When I was younger, younger than before
I never saw the truth hanging from the door
And now I'm older see it face to face
And now I'm older gotta get up clean the place.
And I was green, greener than the hill
Where the flowers grew and the sun shone still
Now I'm darker than the deepest sea
Just hand me down, give me a place to be.
And I was strong, strong in the sun
I thought I'd see when day is done
Now I'm weaker than the palest blue
Oh, so weak in this need for you.
He left us 39 yrs. ago today. Rest in peace Nick. Your music lives on in the hearts of many fans around the world.
This is the most beautiful song I have ever heard.
i just broke down listening to this holy shit i can't even remember the last time that's happened
I am right there with you, man.
Yes..
I just broke down to it to
Can't stop listening to it.
Seriously one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Jesus, this song kills me so much every time. I feel like he's right here, trying not to slip away.
Hypnotic, like pealing church bells, on and on...
His music changed my life. I'm so humbly privileged to share mutual feelings with you about Nick's music.
So beautiful. Gives me goose bumps. I know of few other artists whose music reaches me in the way Nicks music does. Timeless. Without doubt one of the greatest singer songwriters and guitar players this country has produced. My very humble opinion.
The most beautiful song I've ever heard. Except for maybe From the Morning. Nick has a direct line to my soul.
From The Morning is what the soul would sound like if it could be heard.
he was not for this world, too sensitive, who could have had the heart gentle enough to love him.
Derek Kase that's so sad
That's how I feel about me.
Great guitar pickin' such a smooth, soothing voice...Rest In Peace Nick you are sadly missed...
His ears.
l am, at best a cold and distant person but this guys music speaks to me. this is the first time l have listened to this artist and lam 57, but l will be getting to know the rest of his music" starting right now".
Thanks.
+Ryan Montgomery I don't buy music, on any format, but I will definitely check you out on UA-cam.
Goosebumps
Nicks music hits me with a barrage of emotions every time I listen to him, peacefulness, sadness, empathy, and probably most prominent- bittersweet happiness. My mind is always filled with what-ifs when I listen to him. What if he would of developed a fan base when he was alive, what if he found his lover, what if he had just one fan tell him how much of an impact his music would have on the world.. I believe it was in a documentary where Nick said he wished he could hear one person say..
I care nick... I care 😔
No wonderful poor Nick was so depressed believing people would buy his music when only about 10k did across the three albums. Your recognition though Nick will go on through the ages long beyond almost all others. Pure genius and as someone on here said he plays the guitar like an angel plays a harp. RIP Nick.
If only he could have known how important and appreciated he was , is and will always be to the world of music. Rest in peace .
It was not in vain....still listening now to Nick Drake a singular talent.
Blimey - this is better than the released version. Glad to see unearthed recordings by Nick are still being discovered after all this time.
This is the best version of this song!
oh my god. this is unbelievable . love hazey jane home recording too but listen to that guitar! it makes me so sad that nick had to go so soon. i mean, what a talent! love you nick
I listen to this and all of a sudden, all my trivial little problems seem so small. That's what great music does for me. It allows me to transend.
How could anyone not love this song.
Ah Nick drake...he knew so much and took it away with him.may his soul shine in the heavens..
Is it a river running by? No it's an equally beautiful flowing guitar like no other!
The courage of Truth...the deepest Spiritual Soul i have ever met...thank you Nick for always 🙏💜🌟🧚♂️
only song that can bring tears to my eyes within the first 5 seconds.
When I first heard this song it put me into another place of existence, I have never heard a song that is so haunting and deeply personal as this one. Nick you are one of a kind and one of the kindest too.
When Am World Weary Nick Allways Soothes My Soul
Now I'm weaker the palest blue
Oh so weak in this need for you.
Nick Drake makes sadness sound so beautiful
Incredible. So good. Perfect for my beginning day. Love you Nick.
Such beautiful picking. Such a beautiful song. We miss you Nick. Thank you for leaving us with your music. 💜💜💜
It's rare to find a musician who bares their soul , nick Drake did just that and I for one am thankful , the beauty and the sadness of this world shines through his music .
So much light shone from a man with so much impenetrable darkness. R.I.P Nick Drake
So much talent!! Oh, Nick, you are incredible. So sweet and so perfect! Your songs makes me feel better when I'm sad. It's like a consolation because your lyrics always seem to have been written to describe how I feel. Thank you for Nick, God. He was amazing.
What beauty he left behind..
Nick, wherever you are...hope you can see your spirit move us all
Wonderful, unique, hauntingly beautiful
Imagine if the spirit of this recording permeated our entire population. Humanity and nature would be safe.
2022 and this song still brings me so much comfort. Thankyou, nick
I really love this home recording… He was so beautiful inside and out.
There has always been a quality about his lyrics, his voice, his guitarwork that has struck me to my very inner being. I cannot help but be moved and introspect.
One of greatest artists you've never heard about...
Imagine having clear video recordings with Nick Drake. The things we might have seen if he would have lived on.
Brings me to tears
Nick is sitting right here, so weak in this need for you.
goose bumps.....love so much nick drake!!!
Gosh I wish he'd have recorded this version... Simply spellbound.
Also at 57, why are Nick Drake's songs so close to our souls? Maybe because he was so sincere. Now learning his "Place to be" I am rediscovering myself and my life. Thank you Nick!
I am glad I heard this while he alive. It (he ) left us way too early. This was a sweet boy with harmony in his heart... just not in his mind.
Perfection
l'une des chansons les plus poigniantes de l'histoire ;artiste hors pair
Always wondered how this version never made it to the album ... I like the album version (strumming) also, but this finger picking version is stunning. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for recording this masterpiece
Beautiful. I think this is my favourite version of the several recordings there are.
Love this man's music...he was so talented...
Love this. Hope l leave when hearing this version as I'll leave fearless.
I agree that nicks death is a tragedy. He was so talented but unfortunately his condition became so intolerable. A lot of people still suffer. But we find some solace in his music and his words. Love u nick
Solo queste parole e ho detto tutto: genio, poeta, angelo, formidabile chitarrista, ragazzo bellissimo!!! ti ameremo per sempre caro nick!!! riposa in pace.
Fuck, fuck, fuck. This man was so good.
What a raw and amazing version of the song. Its like his songs transport you to another world
Beautiful man
pure emotions
u expressed so lovely- The complete sentiment of this post. the feel of the home recording+--his true opinion on demo's is correct---demo's r when the heart is most filled wit interset.--when alone in his bedroom removed from all the frills not caring bout nothing going on.-that's whene drakey was most relaxed.-BRAVO---MY MYSPACE FRIEND MUZBOZ
Beautiful...
must learn to play this version. ty for uploading. had the bootleg cd years ago.
I've had Pink Moon CD in my car player for weeks - it's just doing something really good for me, so I keep playing it nonstop.
The grainy-ness of the record really makes this sound so natural. The LP version is certainly nice, but this feels so much more human.
the sound of his guitar is so familiar, it’s like a distant memory :,)
Sheer beauty. Thank you Nick.
Lol.
The guitar picking sounds like life's days ticking by.
I'm crying...
oh so weak,in this need for you" how can you not love this?
