Already ordered and absolutely can't wait. This will be my go-to lens for our upcoming trip to Alaska. No, this isn't the ONLY lens I'll be bringing, as I literally own the entire Nikon Z line, but this is definitely going to be the one that will most likely be attached to one of my bodies that's going on the trip for that maximum versatility option.
I'm in North Vancouver, Canada and while I purchased this lens from my local vendor, I thought that I'd simply add to your review. This lens is practically glued to my Z9 for walk abouts. Simply superb lens and I do own a number of very hi-end nikon z lenses. Lightweight, excellent range both at the wide, long and close up angles. It truly delivers. Absolutely no regrets and the price is not a pocket breaker either.
Looks like the perfect walk around beyond the 24-120 which has been my favorite since its release but it always seemed a little short and the 24-200 was just blah. Hoping this lens is somewhere in the middle.
This lens will be great for me to use for community events in summer when there is plenty of light. For special events, I use my Z8 and prime lenses. I will never use this lens for paid events.
The question that I have is how does it compare with 24-200 at the long end? I like versatility, I can live with f/8, I'm willing to sacrifice 24mm, but if it's softer than 24-200 then it's a non starter.
This new lens performs very well at full telephoto and compares favorably against the Nikkor Z 24-200mm. It is very sharp for this type of super-zoom lens. >Mark
It's a new world since the advent of mirrorless bodies. In the old days of SLR's and DSLR's, an f8 aperture would be way too dark to look through via a prism, mirror and groundless. But now, with electronic viewfinders everything's bright. Also, the improved image quality affforded with modern sensors, the sometimes higher ISO needed when shooting at smaller apertures still allows for clean images.
Thanks for the great review. I shoot a Z5 24-200 but often pack a 100-400 zoom for wildlife photos. I am thinking this will be perfect to replace both on upcoming trip to Europe and thus only pack one lens for maximum flexibility and minimum weight and size.
Looks pretty nice. Been waiting for it. But F8? I was expecting F5.6 at the long end. That's unfortunate. Still waiting on my 180-600mm order so we'll see (I think that one is a F5.6 at the long end). I used to use the 28-300mm F-mount until I moved to the Z lineup. That was the greatest option for walking-around/travel on the D750

Yes, I would like it for light 200-400 landscape in the mountains, don't mind the f8 if it's sharp and can resolve for the 45mp sensor reasonably... Otherwise it will just be a school soccer type lens.. Can't wait for the proper reviews with real results and maths. 😊

the Z 28-400mm hasn't been added to the Nikon Support website Synchro VR list yet, but the Nikon press release says the lens has 5.5 stops Synchro VR and 5 stops non-Synchro VR. the B&H video mentions the Z 8 and Z 9 have Synchro VR, but the Z f does as well per your Nikon Support website so could mention that (all 3 cameras) in future videos so yes, Synchro VR is available on the Z f body with this lens, 5.5 stops total VR which adds a half stop more VR than the lens's 5 stops VR
I ordered mine, hope it ships on the 18th! I’m really looking forward to testing this lense out for versatility. Has anyone thrown one off the Empire State Building to test its durability?
mine shows up today and it might just make me let go of my 24-120mm Z and 180-600mm Z. I love both of those lenses enough but the new 28-400mm might replace them, because of said versatility. the 180-600mm is a beast to carry and more often than not, 400mm would be plenty of reach.
The Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR Lens is a full frame lens. It will be better in general working on a full frame camera versus the Sony rx10 IV which is a point and shoot camera with a much smaller sensor of one inch.
It's a good question though. The Sony is pretty good and similarly priced, so it does make me question if I should buy one of these lenses or the Sony if I want an all in one solution. I'm wondering if cropping on a Z6 and the ability to use a higher iso is enough to make up for the F4 and 200mm extra reach.

Yeah I think f8 is fine for 400mm. What about 200mm, perhaps 300mm as those are probably comparable to 24-200 f4-6.3 vr, perhaps you can get f5.6 at 200mm?

@@BandH MTF charts published by Nikon suggest that 28-400 is weaker than 24-200. Is there anywhere we can download raw files taken with the new lens?

I still use my 28-300mm with my Z9.
I must say that I really love that lenshood, must be evry effcetive @ 400mm!!!

Yea its very abnormal for Nikon lens. But to get lightweight and reduce glass weight inside, they have to make a sacrifice.

Yeah I think f8 is fine for 400mm. What about 200mm, perhaps 300mm as those are probably comparable to 24-200 f4-6.3 vr, perhaps you can get f5.6 at 200mm?
@@Viroviy f/8 starts at 200mm, and f/5.6 if I remember correctly starts at 50mm. It's definitely slower than 24-200 lens.
