- "Blur-Lights in the Videodrome" by Meinl Cymbals artist Aric Improta
On July 01, 2017, Meinl Cymbals hosted our Meinl Drum Festival at our HQ in Gutenstetten, Germany. Meinl Cymbals artist Aric Improta was one of the performing artists at the festival that day and easily turned in one of the most unique and memorable drumming performances to have been given in the history of drum festivals in general.
Aric's performance was over 40 minutes in length and was one piece. Prior to the festival, Aric rehearsed his performance from start to finish 100 times. He said he did this not only to commit it to memory, but just as importantly to be sure that he had accounted for every possible thing that could go wrong so that he was as prepared as he could be. That's a rough cumulative total of 66.67 hours that Aric spent preparing for this. That's a lot of time, and it showed. Like all of our artists that day, Aric really hit a home-run with his performance.
Just like all of our artists' performances at the festival, Aric's was recorded for posterity, but more importantly for sharing with the rest of the world through our social channels. Unfortunately the recorded audio of Aric's performance was corrupted in various places throughout.
Given how absolutely unique Aric's performance was and how much time he invested into it, we knew we had to do record it again. And fortunately Aric was eager to do so. So after Aric rehearsed the piece many more times, we brought him to Nashville, set him up in a studio here and had him film the entire piece again.
What you see here is one take only.
Sure, we recorded multiple takes, but we didn't stitch any of them together. Aric played through the entire piece while in the studio at least five times, but the one take you see here is the one he chose to share with all of you. There's no video trickery or mixing trickery. It's just a good sounding room with good mics, and a really good drummer. I was at the festival in July and watched Aric's performance from start to finish and I was at the studio and watched this performance from start to finish. What the attendees at the festival witnessed is what you are now about to witness.
We uploaded this to UA-cam as we usually do, but because of its length, they will insert ads into it and that will break up your viewing experience. So we uploaded the full length to our Vimeo channel as well so that you can witness this in uninterrupted glory. We hope you enjoy this as much as we do. Aric really gave this his all.

Guy at the mixing desk: “I just asked for your kick drum, Aric....”
This statement just described every drummer in the world, who ever was, or will be
Ah Pete Sandoval... he was so special in his prime.
i was not expecting a laugh in this comment section. thanks, man 😂
@@Virvum_Juggernaut spotted the reference, are we officially old dudes now? :)
If this video were audio-only, I would definitely have thought Aric Importa was a band.
Underrated comment
I am totally humbled by this. I spent 30 years, 6 hour daily devotion to the drum. As drummers we should rejoice. He's the chosen one.
So glad to call Aric my friend. He’s pushing the creativity limits and is just an amazing musical mind. Bravo my man!
Good and classy comment from another outstanding drummer. The 24th Annual Drum-Off was a great show.
Im big fans of both of you. Got to see Eric with Nightverses this last year. Luke Holland and Jason Richardson played tooooo.... Juan Carlito! Im all over your instagram daily! Amazing drummers!
Absolutely love both of you guys 😍🤘👌👌
You guys are my inspiration to pursue drums 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Did he got over you already? He lost beacuse of you hahaha
Cherish that friendship bro!
I love how creative Aric was for the entire 39 minutes and he didn't rely on insane time signatures for this. Having fun and pushing himself within and around 4/4. He's such a great composer and improvisor.
This is by far the coolest drum solo I've ever seen.

He’s up there with the greats with this one.
@@dumpygoodness4086 yeah why am I only seeing this guy now?
i wish he was my dad
If this doesn’t make you want to practice then nothing will.
Todd Wilson lol this goes beyond making me want to practice and just makes me want to completely quit.
You're right! I haven't played in a while, and saw this and set up my kit. It's really about the joy of drumming.
I'll probably never be as good a drummer. I should probably start with practicing backflips.

So true. 😂
holy hell. get this man an Olympic medal
Yeah, really. Seriously, we're uniting the whole of civilization to advance humanity's collective culture through pole vaulting? Nah, man, let's get music in the Olympics, and put this gent on the rock percussion team.
I can't believe one dude with a drum set and a few electronics was able to take me through such an incredible array of emotions through a 40 minute experience which transcended music and visuals and became something even beyond what words can explain. This is truly something historic and unfortunately our current world isn't capable of fully appreciating this masterpiece. We are the few and privileged so rejoice.
Amen
I have watched this video many times, I freaking love it. Aric is pure freaking genius.
Aric is a true musician that pushes the limits of drumming. Absolute genius.
This is the best drum solo ever performed by a human being.
I know right...!!! I know right....!!!!!!
I mean, if it's not, I DEFINITELY want to see that video!!
When I was little, I watched videos of John Bonham solos. That turned into Terry Bozzio, turned into Thomas Haake, turned into Matt Halpern.
Aric is one of those talents that while we appreciate him today, they'll be making documentaries about him 20-30 years from now. This is far from drumming. This is mad genius and unhindered talent and creativity. I'm so floored and impressed.
Mad genius is the perfect way to put it
Chris Rowe My favorite drummer ever! So creative it's unbelievable really. I'm really not crazy about his band though I do like it. He could play in any band!
Fucking love Matt as well dude!
I've been playing drums since 7 years old..(54 now) I almost stopped the video 2 minutes in because of the samples etc. Glad af i didn't ...this kid is top 5 ever! totally blown away ..but i "get it" ;)
@@ricklandre5023 i cant stand the stuff with a vocalist but their newest album is instrumental
For the first time in the history of "youtube" drummers we are presented with true art. This is NOT drumming. This is like Stravinsky or Picasso..Mindblowing amazing !
Well said......like a "Fucking Modern art masterpiece " by - Gunny
I think Mr. Improta is phenomenal, but I would not say that there has been no other art. I've listened to him since the 2012 24th Annual Drum-Off, and he is just incredible. The scope of the composition just expands from his incredible chops. There are some other great drummers out there.
But drumming 😁🤘✌
There are many good drummers on UA-cam
they just dont have the views so you will rarely see them through UA-cam algorhythm

39+ minutes of perfection without repetition, no mistakes, how is that even humanly possible? Every second of that was incredible. Deep respect to Aric, what an inspiration 🙏

he sometimes makes guitar loops and then plays over them like here:

@@dumpygoodness4086 he's a very solid drummer with promising ideas and cool tricks, but I think he lacks personality and depth in his drumming. Got to watch the whole thing, but lost interest within the first 10 minutes
Not saying he doesn't deserve the amount of respect and praise he gets, but if you're wondering why he's not as influent as Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Matt Garstka, or even Ringo Starr, then you got your answer
I don't know what just happened there..that was a journey like I've never been on before. Honestly...it had to be the most incredible thing in music that I've ever seen. Thank you so much Aric Improta for putting your gift out to the world so that everyone could experience it.
I remember listening to this when it came out, with closed eyes inside my bed and having a mystical experience, words can´t describe.
This is still, to this day, the greatest drum solo I have ever seen on UA-cam. It never seizes to hook me in and boggle my mind everytime I see this video.
This deserves hundreds of millions of views. Easily one of the most incredible and intricate performances I've seen.
He'd need to have a thong on and be singing about having orgies with drug dealers while twerking (all of this while being a hot female of course) to get hundreds of millions of views unfortunately. We live in a silly world where most people can't appreciate something like this.
Mcufre Couldnt agree more, I was born in 04 and I cant put into words how much i hate my generation and time. Id love to start a band, but nobody is interested in anything other then drugs and rap. I’ve been drumming for nearly 9 years. My father and I jam together now very often, but I’m missing something i haven’t even had before. It’s the feeling of being surrounded by musicians and feeling the vibe. Everyone is so blinded by media and social influence nowadays.
I wouldn't call myself a musician but I've played bass in bands and I have a hard enough time memorizing a 4 minute song where I'm playing only one instrument. This is one of the most impressive musical performances I've ever seen.
It amazes me how he's memorized all 40 minutes of this crazy piece
Zlotz Not true whatsoever, lol. Helps to read the description.
like the part that says "Aric rehearsed his performance from start to finish 100 times. He said he did this not only to commit it to memory, but ... (etc)" ?
What I'm more amazed by is how he came up with all of it.
Do you believe that he is memorized it??I can't! I think is total improvisation

Kevin Corkran an impromptu by Improta
A monster, a machine, a mind blowing masterpiece created by the coolest badass drummer on the planet. Best 39minutes I have had in a long time. I'm 57 years old. I started playing when I was 8, out grew a few teachers, ended up in Manhattan taking lessons from Jeff Becks drummer Narada Michael Walden. I have seen all the greats live, and I think what Aric does is light years ahead. It's magical.
This IS THE BEST drum performance I have ever seen on youtube and in life, period.
In 40 years of watching drummers worldwide I've never seen such innate talent and creativity. This is a masterpiece in every way humanly possible!!!!!!!!
Every single element of this is beyond impressive. Aric, you're an absolute monster composer and musician. Kudos to Meinl and the production team for capturing a seriously special performance and composition. Incredible!
Hi Brody, great to hear from you on here and thanks so much for the kind words about Aric and Meinl. Aric worked his tail off to make this happen. He deserves every bit of the credit. We just made sure to have cameras and tape rolling without any glitches...a second time. LOL! - Chris/Meinl
You're very welcome Chris! An absolute pleasure to watch and listen to. I know you work your arse off for these things and I've only heard incredible things about you from all the artists who work with you. Hoping to meet you at NAMM in a couple of weeks mate.
I've been playing and studying drums for 30 years and I'm not sure I've ever seen anything like this.
This deserves so much more attention man. Never thought I'd be interested in watching a 40 minute drum solo from some guy. 40 minutes later and I'm speechless. Incredible talent
4 years later and this video is still under 375k views... This should easily have up in the millions. A true work of art
L E G E N D
The result you get when you've reached the pinnacle of drumming. By far the most creative drum solo I've ever seen.
So the algorithm put this on my feed today; I had NO idea what I was getting into. This musical performance art at it’s finest.
Thanks SO MUCH Meinl for letting Aric re-create this masterpiece for all of us to enjoy!. WHAT AN UNIQUE & INSPIRING ARTIST!
Aric otra dimensión !!!!
What is this a re-creation of? I thought it was original.
Aric isn't just a drummer... He is a genius. A force of nature.
Aric is the future of drumming. And the thing is: there's nobody following the same path. LEGEND!
This might go down as the greatest drum solo in the history of mankind.
I'm 68 years, music is nearly the most important joy in my life...Aric's Performance is some of the most impressive experience! Thx very much for that! 🙏✌❤🔥🥰🇨🇭🌈
Glad I have UA-cam premium so I can keep this in repeat 🙌🏽🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
Just found this; floored is an appropriate adjective. I'm so glad I lived long enough to witness this full-on paradigm shift. A true artistic progression. Somehow, mere words can't do this justice...
How does this only have 200k views? It deserves at least 10 million.
Maybe it is too good for mainstream! The masses will appreciate it 100 years from now I guess…
I love drumming video's but I never expected myself to sit through a 40 min. drum video and be engaged the whole time. This was amazing to watch and listen to. I was surprised so many times.
I'm not even a drummer but i enjoyed every second of this. This is pure talent.
I'm not a drummer either, but Aric really makes me want to buy a kit and practice 5 hours a day.
For now, I'll just use the influence of him, Neil Peart (RIP), Mike Portnoy, and all sorts of other drummers to write songs with kickass fills and grooves in addition to excellent guitar leads and bass riffs. If you're gonna make a great song, you'd better not have a weak link anywhere in the band.
What a testament to creativity and relentless pursuit of passion. Aric said he aims for 4-5 hours of practice and 500 push-ups and sit-ups a day. This masterpiece is a reflection of that work. Let’s all try to be more like this fellow!
This isn’t just a drum solo. This is a think piece.
I bet he practices 40 hours a day.
Lmaoo, imagine if he really did play for basically two days straight. 😂😂
As Aric mentioned earlier in some interview, he plays 5 hours a day
Pretty sure he's the guy who issues the bonds that backs the LingLing insurance!
Hmmmm 40 hours in one day seems about your maths right
Ling Ling would be proud of him!
You can really feel his passion in his playing
The more I see and hear of Aric, the more I am amazed...This guy is definately one of a kind...
This is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen in my life. Holy shit.
That was the greatest drum solo ever composed on this earth everyone knows it
This tama star Bubinga kit sounds outta this world. Loveee the sound of these drums. They are so dynamic. When he barely touched the toms they still have that beautiful tone and when he pounds the hell outta them they sound like cannons.
Andy Ham yes, mixing is top notch. This is an art also, very hard
It´s been a while since something left me in so much awe that I was glued to my screen for 40 minutes without moving or the urge to do something else. Incredible!
I'm a drummer. I listen to drummers everyday. There is no one in the world like this guy!
I have never been so impressed in my entire life. I first saw aric when he placed SECOND in the Drum Off in 2012 and I have been keeping tabs every so often but he really outdid everything I have ever seen before with this masterpiece. He plays in a way no one could teach with a creativity that is so honest and curious. Bravo, Aric.
One of the best distant concerts of my life

I've been playing drums for about 18 years now, I watched this and wanted to push my limits even further. Thanks for the inspiration Aric.
He actually kept me captured in the video. Truly a work of art. Nothing short of genius
Aric Improta is like the Stanley Kubrick of drums. King 👑
Oh my God. I haven't smiled this much in anything other than a Buddy Rich solo. When the apex of an art form is made FUN for all to enjoy...this guy has no ceiling.
A collaboration between Aric Improta and Noisia would be insane

I would have never thought I'd willingly listen to a 40 minutes drumming performance. Next level. Amazing.
man could EASILY use timed and choregraphed routines of samples doubled to the click in his IEMs, but NOT. THIS. GUY. god damn, that’s one of the MAJOR things that contributes to this dude’s style being fucking LEGENDARY.
Pretty sure I've watched this at least 40 times. Hasn't gotten boring one single second.
Not a musician alive has this level of creativity ON THE FLY. Not one. Aric is THE goat of all goats
This is one of the most under-veiwed masterpieces of video on the UA-cams I've seen. I was expecting 14 million. Help me understand.
80k views. That just about sums up the scene atm... This guy doing a 40 minute piece and pushing all sorts of styles and boundaries, showing unreal range and maturity of his playing style. Followed aric for ages now but this is just a wonder to watch.
We live in idiocracy. What do you expect?
Hey, at least it's more than doubled since then.
I don’t know if the world is ready for what this dudes about to bring to drumming.
This performance is the best thing I've ever seen in my life. I say performance because this is not just a drum solo but a complete work of art, created in the moment. Perfect. I want to congratulate my fellow drummer for enjoying watching this video several times. P.S. Who says that everything has already been played. It is not true, the human mind is totally unexplored. In this case, the man simply opened his mind and relaxed. It's a different perception, a different door to drumming.
I've never been blown away by a piece of music quite like this before... absolutely mind boggling in its creativity and execution..what an artist
My mind has been Blown. I've been playing drums since 1964 and I've never seen nor heard a drum solo as musical and creative as this one. This reminds me in a weird way kind of like Zappa Floyd Rush ELP and King Crimson combined with a Techno Trance Feel. Mr Improta is creative, innovative, energetic and plays with speed, power and finesse. What a brilliant piece of music from a Monster Drummer with Monster Chops and Musicality. Rock On Aric!
He's not just a drummer he's a musician, this performance is Ace 🤙
Incredible drumming and incorporation of electronics! I've been a drummer for over 40 years and this is by far my favorite solo of all time.
Absolutely mind blowing! Seriously a one man band. Best drummer ever.
Drumming as an art form. Drumming as an athletic sport.

This isn't solely drumming. This is an experience...
I've never seen such perfection
best 39 minutes of my day. This was absolutely beautiful, inspiring, massive. I don't know how to describe it. This is a masterpiece. Congrats Aric for your infinite creativity !
I've watched a lot of drummers but holy shit is this guy up there with Angren, Haake and others that reinvent the wheel. Breathtaking, creative and so unique, Aric Improta is a name I'll never forget from now on.
Reason this doesn't have many views is cause there are only so many people that appreciate and can absorb and understand such talent. The rest are like "Dave Lombardo, John Bonham, Phil Rudd, GD Steve Gadd, etc etc, ARe ThA BEst iN tHa GALAxY!!"😕
