Mr. Scientist Jaws was based on the 1916 shark attacks.
4:14 --- The actor who played Alex in the movie (Jeffery Voorhees) still lives on Martha's Vineyard and owns a pub called "The Wharf" . Often welcomes fans of the movie to the pub and will even sit with them on occasion. Just overall a REALLY nice guy.

Lol. You want this shark to be so clever that he defies all scientific evidence. I love it. Meanwhile, the scientist is like, “yeah, no!”
I always say the movie gave Bruce the psychological complexity of a Killer Whale, but in the human psychological intimidating image of a great white, which just look terrifying.
I could live comment on this all day. So fun. “We know that great white shakes breath. Whether they breach for vengeful reasons, I’m not convinced.” 😂 That’s his nice way of saying: “yeah, that would never and has never happened in the history of boats and sharks.” Ha. But it doesn’t matter because it’s still spectacular and Bruce was a special shark of above average intelligence who after a bad week was out to do damage. So... science be damned. 😎
There was once a Great White Shark that got stuck in a saltwater pond in Massachusetts a long time ago. Came in the same way Bruce did. Wasn't has big but still was really cool. Videos are on UA-cam.
I wasn’t going to watch this because I thought the shark scientist would put me off my future Jaws viewing. I am so glad I watched this. I enjoyed it. Well done to the Jaws team for making the film fairly accurate (for the time it was made). It’s still one of my all time favourite films. Superb acting, great story,, love it.
To inspect Ben Gardner’s boat, at least take Batman, he has that shark repellent after all LOL.
Regarding the harpoon and barrels, Frank Mundus fishing out of Montauk, Long Island used to use the harpoon and barrel method to hunt large great whites. His 4,000 pound specimen in 1964 was caught after putting two harpoons and barrels on it. Peter Benchley's novel Jaws has the harpoons and barrels in it so it wasn't just in the film.
Quint was partly based on Frank Mundus. Quint even referenced a 16 footer off Montauk in the film.

Pretty normal to kill sharks and other fish back then though. They were still even killing whales.

Yes you're absolutely right, one did get stuck in that pond - although I do believe that is a pretty rare event! Sadly though I think shark scientist Greg Skomal said the shark died eventually as they were trying to get it back out to deeper water after a few days. Pond's evidently a stressful place for whites!
@@SHARKBYTES --- couple of years back I believe there was a shark sighting in a shallow river in Maine which had never happened before. Could have been just after Hurricane Sandy. Maybe the hurricane drove the shark inland or it confused the overflowing river for a normal waterway? Not sure.
They're might be a very slim chance that the shark could be an escaped science experiment hence the reason it's so smart
If this movie was realistic, it wouldn't of became the first ever blockbuster I believe.
My take is that the idea of the story is that "Bruce" was a VERY unusual shark, a smart fish. He's a type of shark never studied before, hopefully a freak of nature. Anyway, movie making at its best. At least I know the "Vineyud" story was spot on.
If you want to take Jaws 2 into account, it's possible that there were two sharks in the area that were attacking people. One shark would come in, attack someone, and swim away for a while. The other shark would come in, attack someone else, and swim away. Rinse and repeat.
A possible lost megaladon species praps? Thts my theory anyway!

I'm never going to pick fault with a movie that l adore.
Supreme acting, screenplay, directorship and that sublime soundtrack, credit in the bank as regards artistic licence.
Although, that jetty scene, I've always felt that, with the length of chain, time that wreckage starts swinging around, Brucie would be VERY close to matey and the shore !
Don't worry Ross, Pippit survived, there were some boy scouts further down the beach, at a fast food stall, they had just completed a mile swim for their merit badges, he could smell the hotdogs ! 😁
Pippin. The dog`s name. The writer, screenwriter must be a J.R.R. Tolkien fan, naming the dog Pippin, the nutty, young Hobbit in The Lord of the Rings.

The cage footage was filmed at the neptune islands here in south australia, rodney fox the survivor of the 1963 attack is runs cage diving tours at the reef and are diving as i type this, great whites are common along our city beaches, we do have a shark spotting plane and helicopter patrolling our beaches but there have been fatal attacks , almost all have been in broad day light...3 metre whites and bronze whalers are not uncommon at our beaches in adelaide....rodney fox is the guy with the chunk bitten out of him in the book the sheriff was reading...
There is footage of a great white making a very sudden appearance and coming up out of the water just like the chum scene. It startles everyone. Oh and Frank Mundus used barrels to catch a great white. His biggest took 4 barrels

Question: Would a shark (even a big white shark) hunt so many times in a row or rather be fed for several weeks after the first prey - making the continuous hunting as shown in the film less realistic?

Those 1916 attacks rocked NJ like Jaws did the world.. They say the celenity in the water was enough so that a white whark could have survived.
Or a bull shark. They can handle brackish water.

I still wanna know how Ben Gardner died. Did he have a heart attack after Bruce rammed a hole in his boat, then fall over and drown in the flooded section and get his eye eaten?
Ron and Valerie Taylor said that the Real Shark, in Australia, accidentally got it's Snout trapped in the Cage's Roping and It Was Trying To Free Itself.

Jaws is fantastic film but not realistic at all.. but Jaws wasn't trying to be realistic it's just a film made for entertainment purposes and Jaws executes that entertainment aspect flawlessly never a boring moment or bad character it's just a fantastic film from beginning to end..
One critique… the cage damage. In the documentary Blue Water, White Death, a great white bends the crap out of a shark cage. The cage today is located In Tennessee at the Chattanooga Aquarium. I’ve stood in it. They definitely can, when motivated, wreck a cage.
Another thing in the Jaws franchise that was inaccurate, in Jaws 2, Jaws killed a killer whale. There's no way a shark would kill an orca. Orcas are too big and smart and usually are in pods. Great Whites actually avoid killer whales because Killer whales are great at killing sharks and love eating their fatty acids.

It was a "holiday roast"
Most Great White attacks are in shallow water. It is not unusual for a shark to target one of a group. It is also acknowleged that a shark will attack a dog before a human being. I grew up beside the water in Australia so sharks were something we were very aware of.
I spent time as a kid in South California , they would close beaches for hours , if someone even spotted a white shark
I knew he'd give it a six!

Based on the knowledge they had in 75, and making adjustments for the times, I should say it's more fair to give the movie an 8! That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Lol I'll drink to your legs!
should check-out Malibu Artists channel you'd be surprised how many Great Whites swim underneath surfers and swimmers unnoticed daily and how close to the beach they are. Few if anyone new about this until filmed using a drone . Sharks and people in close contact frequently and in numbers and no conflict so far ( i think ) doesn't make great news so tv isn't interested.

pretty damn good. They'd kick away from that in a hurry, and why go after struggling prey when there was actual dead meat that required no effort?
22:23 -- easy enough, Ben was attacked by the shark who left a huge hole in the boat (and a tooth), and though he wasn't eaten, he died onboard from blood loss or fright. Crab or other such life took out his eye.. Or maybe it was the result of an accident during the attack..
I think that the shark killed the other, younger fisherman who was with Ben Gardner. The shark either injured him or he had a heart attack (he seemed elderly in the film) and died. The hole maybe was a result of Bruce ramming into the wood.

The live footage of the shark with the cage, it accidentally got entangled so it was trying to escape, not actually attacking the cage.😊
48:30 There have been several instances where sharks have broken into cages, UA-cam them. So I'm not sure the guy's assertion that "there's no reason for the shark to be doing this to the cage" is entirely correct.
The fact that the Shark is pulling The Stern, that can't Cut The Water, as it would The Bow, makes it much more unlikely, even if it had Strength, due to The Laws Of Physics
They had to exaggerate the shark behaviour, almost humanize it to make the film terrifying and thrilling. Especially in the sequels where the stories get sillier and sillier. Ther biggest tragedy resulting from these films has been the demonization and mass killing of sharks.

I never assumed that it was just his head. Nor that the shark actually bit him. Because he was still in the boat and if the shark had actually attacked him why the fuck would they need the tooth? Obviously there would be evidence that he was dead because of a massive bite wound. Always made the most sense that when the shark hit the boat it was attacking that he had a heart attack and died. Then little crabs and feeder fish just picked out his eye. Much more logical. And I just assumed his body was below deck and floated over the hole still attached to the Head it's just the head is the only thing we see
Yeah, I agree. I just never understood how the body, or head of Ben Gardiner was inside the hull of the boat. It made no sense. Your statement made me feel that I might have been on the right track, in thinking a situation that you describe, is the same one I came to believe so many years later, because at first I did not get it. Why, or how is he inside the hull? So, we have kinda found the same conclusion, after thinking on it for years. Sorry for chewing your ear off. LOL, no pun intended.

The shark pulling the boat was proven impossible on MythBusters. Even with a hypothetical 25 foot white pointer, there is just not enough thrust generated.

There are times when the shark scientist appears to be saving his own job. 'Never happened to me' (not a quote) :-)
This film definitely gave sharks a bad reputation. And a lot of sharks got persecuted /killed because of these films.
The shark experts that helped to make these film’s wished they didn’t after all the carnage it caused to sharks all around the world.
It’s sad that people didn’t know anything about sharks at the time of these films in the late 1970s and early 1980s so everyone took it as the truth and not just a film sadly.
That's thre worst aspect if these films, indirectly caused thre death of millions of sharks and a misunderstanding of them. Around 10 deaths a year from shark encounters hardly warrants them as a threat to man
Mistaken identity...still she's gone. Wouldn't It be more realistic and useful to accept that , sometimes, we can become a valuabe snack? We are not in our environment when in the water, and our precious friends deserve to be accepted for what they are. Nice vid, anyway. Jaws rules. YO
Kristian has discussed sharks predating on humans on his channel if you're interested. It does happen, but I believe in cases of this, the shark is generally very desperate.

This channel should do more to help the image of sharks, increase awareness of the importance of sharks to the oceans. This film did tremendous damage to shark populations and there's still an unjustified fear of them. Humans are far more dangerous. I'm not a shark expert but sharks don't behave anything like in the film which basically turned a shark into a Michael Myers type fiend. Totally unreal
The shark "expert" must not realize those were real sharks attacking the cage lol.
The real shark was not attacking it. It swam up over the cage to go after a piece of bait and got entangled in the ropes that tied the cage to the boat, panicked, and thrashed about like crazy trying to free itself. The other shot with the shark thrashing its head from side to side- it's hard to see exactly what it's attacking there. May be a bait, may be a bait tied to the miniature cage, or could be a second angle of the shark trying to free itself. The final shot is just a great white giving a test bite to the miniature cage which is likely the result of the metal of the cage interacting with the salt water triggering electrical signals. The shark is just being curious. So no, the shark expert isn't wrong about this, sorry

@@TheAerovons its not a silly comparison, like yeah proportionally there's more but i was more asking to see whether you just have a vendetta against sharks or if its any dangerous animal at all and evidently its the second. animals cant be evil. humans are not the most important things on the planet. yes its awful and horrible when people die but we "apologise" for animals because they havent done anything wrong, and otherwise culling happens or the animals are hunted down which is also bad. its simply not productive for anyone to villainise an animal for simply being an animal

Why would anybody watch Jaws with a shark scientist? Do you watch Frankenstein with medical doctors or surgeons so they can tell you the movie is bogus? Movies are all in fun. Why be a drag?
