What a great opening 2 part 1 with Dr. Peterson. As a Mennonite grew up in a small Prairie Town surrounded by Mennonites, I well remember my fatigue at why did we have to be different. Even in that environment I was well aware that we were to be different and that we were. Fast-forwarding to my professional life as a singer and teacher working with many Cantors of the synagogue I was made aware all over again of people chosen to be the other. At this point in my life I feel blessed to be gifted with dear LDS friends, still with the synagogue colleagues, still a Mennonite and feel drawn back to understanding what it is to stand aside and be willing to be different, but also to make a difference.
Dan Peterson was my bishop when I first moved to Utah. His knowledge and love for the Savior changed my life in ways I couldn't possibly express. He's a wonderful man.
I love Dr. Peterson. The “ Hank Aaron of religious studies.” I study The Come Follow Me manual every night. I often go back and listen to his fist guest appearances with John and Hank. Peterson’s style is very endearing, and as he says he’s ” not afraid of any topic.” Absolutely my favorite guest!!!
@31:20 This made me think of the quote "Perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Those who have leadership thrust upon them, and take up the mantle because they must, and find to their own surprise that they wear it well." - Albus Dumbledore
Thank you for this lesson. I was impressed by the thought that Sal didn't know about spiritual things as his companion did. Perhaps he was always a people pleaser.
Is there any chance that someone from the trip of Benjamin was sought because Benjamin was the son of the right hand? What implications would this have for Joseph's claim for birthright through Ephraim (Kingdom of israel) versus Judah's claim (Kingdom of Judah) and subsequently the anointing of Christ to be the rightful king of the Kingdom of Judah? I appreciate Dan for bringing up the anointing connection, I believe the Western monarchs probably do this more in their ceremonies to further the idea that they are linked to the ancient Israel Kingdom and thus God's chosen monarch, but starting out with the first King of Israel is probably a good way to also set an example to look forward to the King who is anointed, just like we looked forward originally with Adam and Eve for the lamb who would be slaughtered on the altar. Sure enjoy your programs!
Saul disobeyed God by choosing to do things His own way, later, he could not be trusted with God's grace, then you have David who was a faithful servant to the Lord, and David's faith and love for God endured with David his whole life. David dwelled with the Lord. When fear is banished and the faith of God comes, which we saw in David, the indwelling power of God changed David and he became a great king and a loving child of God. God encourages man to rise from the debased condition of the world and let the wonderful Spirit of the Lord work through your soul, spirit, and mind. David became a new person in Christ. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me Phi 4:13
curious. I read somewhere that Oliver Cowdrey was one of the mob at Liberty Jail yelling obscenities at and putting down Joseph and the others. Do you have info on that?

I love hearing Daniel’s stories. Having those illustrations helps color the discussion in a beautifully lively way!

Spencer W. Kimball also admitted that he had seen the Savior face to face.

I would love to get a copy of Understanding Islam. Is it available anywhere?
First one to comment:) thank you for this wonderful discussion.
My career objective is to reach the 36th chamber of Shaolin.

Should be tribe of Benjamin, not trip of Benjamin. ;)
