Amazing! great workflow. I have just purchased your book and have learned so much more about sketchup and layout. I hope to use the same approach when I am all finished school. Thank you for showing us the full potential of sketchup and layout. I am currently in the process of building my details
Thank you so much for these tips! Really great ways of working. Clients love the way Sketchup looks and now I see how we can do all construction documentation in it as well instead of transferring to another programme.
Very good work...no matter what the tool the final outcome should be the same...Nice to see Nick using SU to go beyond what it was made famous for ie quick preliminary sketches into more design development and production output... Great job...Impressed.
Dang! Nick these Videos are just amazing. I'm currently getting away from using Auto CAD, and attempting to create complete Construction Documents using just SketchUp and Layout... Thank you for all you do, # respect !
Thanks again Lane. Have a look at my new book. It shows in detail the whole process and includes a complete home model and all the associated Layout files.
+Nick Sonder Just found and ordered your book off the website www.sketchupbook.com I can't wait to have your book in my library at home. Stoked! Thanks again!
just watched the hole playlist - that was some awesome presentation of working professionally with sketchup. And any sketchup programmers/designers looking, he created some workarounds due to limitations or lacking functionality of sketchup - take a look and improve this great piece of software even further!
please tell me, how do you cut the pieces so that they have the same color as the whole material and at the same time have no holes? Do you make these details separately from the main design or directly in the house model?
wow. I love Sketchup for the early sketch design stages, have always given it away for Design Development, not that I have thought that I couldn't stretch it to this phase, but because I have never thought that it was worth trying to take it to contract documentation. I see your process is high complex and very rigorous, but I can't see how this is quicker then me taking the sketch design in to Revit and completing the documents with Revit. It certainly has a great out come with the type of drawing. This has been a real eye opener. Maybe I need to push my projects a little further in SU, but I thing I will ultimately stick with Revit from my Construction Docs.
David Kidston Hi David, Revit is very powerful no question. What I found was developing the SU model to a much higher level initially allowed me to produce the documentation in the construction phase much more quickly. So much so, that I am in the process of restructuring my fees as I spend far more time on the design phase than I do preparing the construction documents. It's a different process, but for me certainly more fun!
Hi Nick Sonder My name is Alex and I run a practice and also teach at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Have you ever thought of, or do you have a template package that you sell? We created one for Revit, and it allows the students to jump ahead and create great sets. I believe what you do could be revolutionary for students. Details are normally line 2d drawings that have no relation for students and are hard to comprehend, your 3D details would be great for them to learn how buildings are put together. What are your thoughts on something like that?
Nick.. Your videos are spectacular and spot on. Like most I use Sketchup for design and design development, but this is another level. So where's this infamous book I've heard rumors about?
Hi Nick, where are the dimensions on your drawings? I don't see any on your details. Don't you dimension details at all? I really like the 3D details, gives so much more insight, but without dimensions my contractors go nuts. I'm trying to find a workaround. Maybe a hybrid from 2D with dimension and 3D. And what about the detail on your 55"? tv computer screen? Is it fine enough? Thanks!
+Joep van Os Most of the details shown here do not require dimensions. Most of the items detailed already have established dimensions like manufacturer flashing pieces, windows, framing members and trim. I do add dimensions to 3d details that refer to things like a chimney cap design where everything is custom.
